I think that I'm not the only one who has trouble finding a farrier on occasion. What would be awesome if people from different areas would recommend a farrier of their choice. The pickings out there seem slim.
Funny you mention this Julie; I was at my daughters classroom recently. A bunch of Dad's were there to talk about their careers and one of the dads was a farrier.
Let's break the rule (please post promotional stuff in the classifieds as a rule - Wisconsin Farriers, list yourself in our free classifieds as well) and ask Wisconsin Farriers to post their basic info, including name, location and contact info, here. Simply click 'post reply'.
I have a great farrier out of Arcadia, WI. I will see if minds me posting his information and do that for ya'll. I am not sure how far he travels but, he is good. I know of a guy in LaCrescent, MN too that is pretty new but, seemed descent, friendly and trustworthy, although I havent utilized his service.
I will contact both before posting their information and their traveling range!

Country View Vets in Oregon has a good list of Farriers in the Madison area. They will be glad to share with anyone who asks. BTW, they are great vets too.
Do you need a Good farrier, or a farrier?
Sometimes farriers are like the Princess and the Frog... you gotta kiss a lot of frogs before you meet the Prince. From an old fairytale...I hope most of you get the gist.
Know your horse's feet and don't depend on the farrier to be telling you foot stories about your horse's feet unless you have some background knowledge on hoof structure yourself. There are plenty of sources out there, take a few evenings to educate yourself.
I had a "door to door" farrier stop at my place awhile back on a Sunday. It just so happened, I had a horse with the first signs of laminitis and coincidently my own farrier & vet had not returned my calls yet. The guy immediately put down my regular vet and farrier. #1 sign - a good farrier will not put down another in their own field of expertise, but offer suggestions to the customer how they can work together. #2 sign - this guy was going door to door looking for jobs.
The farrier continued on to other horse-folks in the area, and established ONE new customer who happened to be a client of my regular farrier. A few months later, the client called my regular farrier, saying "come fix my horse, he is now lame."
I sincerely hope everyone finds the best farrier that they can find for their horse's sake. If you are knowledgeable, you know when a farrier is taking too much off the toe or the heel, or paring into the frog. Be aware of how your horse's hooves grow and that even filing down the flares may make them lame. Don't depend on shoes to be a fix-it method in all cases.
I prefer no shoes for my horses, and over the last five years using the farrier I currently have, their hooves are strong, do not chip, have good growth and you can mess with their feet because they haven't been hurt or scared by the farrier.
Costs? Not inexpensive, but not overly expensive either. My farrier currently has many customers in a relatively small driving area, so does not need new customers. That's how good SHE is.
We finally found a GOOD farrier. Unfortunately he does not have a phone listing. We found our farrier through the Amish community. The Amish have always had a very good reputation with horses, from training, to farrier, to just about anything to do with horses. Horses are such a part of their lives, that they have become in my opinion, the professionals of horse care.
If you have an Amish community nearby, check with someone in that community about a farrier. Just be sure to respect thier way of life. We have found that Saturday's are the best time to contact someone in the community. Ladies, just remember it may be considered rude if a woman approaches an Amish man to even just ask a question.
Do some reasearch on the best way to approach without offending, and you will find a community full of people that always help each other, and if treated with respect, will help us outsiders too.
I found a farrier for the west bend area. When I had my colt at my daughters and farrier came out Tigger would be to be blunt a total Ass!

The absolute BEST farrier around the La Crosse/Sparta area is Sam Pulhamus!! (608)792-8417 He really takes his time to trim & file the horse's hooves & is super about answering questions for newbies!! He is very personable & never makes me feel dumb for asking anything. He reassures me my horse isn't going to DIE just because he has a slight coronary band injury that always results in a quarter crack...LOL! (I am as protective & cautious over my horse as I am about my kids! Ol' Mamma Hen here! ~Can ya tell I am a newbie too?!) He doesn't charge ridiculas prices & will skip the farm call charge if there is more than 1 horse. I call others @ the stable to see if theirs needs a trim when mine does...others are glad to join in & skip the extra fee too!
He rides competatively and also trains his kids in speed gaming. He ran the OK Corral in the Ontario area for a year too...so he knows horses & their needs VERY well!
He is a fireman for his regular job...so be sure to get ahold of him about a week or maybe more before you need the trim so he can get you in on his schedule.
I've tried lots of farriers in our area & he is the BEST BY FAR!!! I won't have anyone else touch my horse from now on! He's even awesome with my attitudy appy who likes to give farriers 'the business'. He's been so naughty that he's landed himself into shoeing stocks before. He stands like a perfect gentleman for Sam if I hold his lead. That speaks VOLUMES to me!!!
Is there anyone out there in the Madison or surrounding area that can do stud shoes? My daughter is going Novice this year and our regular farrier does not do them, nor does he know of anyone that does.
HELP!! I need a farrier in the Door COunty area that is experienced with high ring bone. I have four horses, two barrel racers and two WP. NEEDED ASAP!! My farrier of 8 years decided a different profession was better!! flexible, indoor accomodations, can do evenings or weekends as well.
Looking for a farrier in Waupaca county.
Our farrier got in an accident (truck) and never was quite the same physically afterwards - he then dropped alot of clients to lighten his work schedule - unfortunately we lived way to the outer region that he served so we got dropped. That was a few years ago, I've been 'kissing frogs' since and it gets old after awhile.
Our horses are all good for farrier work.
Looking for a farrier in Centeral Wisconsin (Wausau). My farrier is very hard to get ahold of since he got another job & my horses are in need of a trim.
Looking for a farrier in Central Wisconsin (Wausau). My farrier is very hard to get ahold of since he got another job & my horses are in need of a trim.
Hope you'll add a free classified for "Farrier Wanted in Wausau Area" - and that the farriers in this thread will add free classifieds offering their services as well.
I was given this link by a friend who said there are some folks around my area looking for farrier care. I'll post my info in case anyone is still in need of services.
I am a certified trimmer and do rehabilitation work as well as routine trims and boot fitting and sales as well. I'm certified with the Institute of Applied Equine Podiatry and have references available if needed.
Please see website address in my profile. Otherwise my phone is 920-419-7447.

High Performance Hoof Care
Julie,
I'm a farrier in Grafton who has been in the business for about 9 years. I work with vets, trainers and owners in order to get the best possible results for the horse. I believe that going barefoot is the best option for most horses, however, if shoes are necessary, hot shoeing gives a great result. Regular scheduling is also important in maintaining good feet. Good "bed side" manner is just as good as proper shoenig techniques in this business. The horse needs to know you are kind. Taking a bit of time to get to know the horse and help him relax pays dividends for everyone. If you wish to chat about feet you can call me at 414-339-4663. If you are out of my travel radius I may still be able to recommed some good farriers in your area.
thanks!
Hi. I just bought a 4yr old horse in Feb. The breeder always trimmed her himself, and she does allow us to pick up her feet so I guess she'd be no trouble. She stands tied very well. Im between Lake Mills, and Jefferson. Very close to both, so Im also close to Watertown and Madison. I need a farrier to trim her. Havent decided to shoe her yet as she does fine being barefoot. Thanks

just wondering if anyone knows of a farrier or other location close to madison where i can find used horseshoes. my fiance does unique metal artwork and is looking for horseshoes to incorporate into her work.
If that doesn't work out, try scrap yards and flea markets..

I was hopeful when I saw this thread through a search in Yahoo but afraid I couldn't find any to help me. I have two problem horses. My older mare used to stand great for farriers and me, but in the last few years has become quite a problem when it comes to lifting her feet. Not mean but will basically lay down on me if I can keep hold of her foot that she tries to pull out of my hands. The other is a younger horse who has been a problem just touching her legs since I got her. I'm basically going to have to get a vet out at the same time to tranq them or preferrably knock them flat out. I have been having a hard time finding a good farrier in my area (central WI not too far from Oshkosh) have gone through many that I will never go back to and I'm afraid it's been some time since my girls feet have been done and they're looking quite bad. I was recommended to a vet that will knock them out and do them but sadly he just had shoulder surgery and can't for some time. If anyone knows someone willing to work on a tranquilized horse please let me know! I'm desperate.
