FARRIERS IN WISCONSIN
I think that I'm not the only one who has trouble finding a farrier on occasion. What would be awesome if people from different areas would recommend a farrier of their choice. The pickings out there seem slim.
THANKS!
Julie

Farriers, post here!
Funny you mention this Julie; I was at my daughters classroom recently. A bunch of Dad's were there to talk about their careers and one of the dads was a farrier.
Let's break the rule (please post promotional stuff in the classifieds as a rule - Wisconsin Farriers, list yourself in our free classifieds as well) and ask Wisconsin Farriers to post their basic info, including name, location and contact info, here. Simply click 'post reply'.
Regards,
Keith

Great Farrier
I have a great farrier out of Arcadia, WI. I will see if minds me posting his information and do that for ya'll. I am not sure how far he travels but, he is good. I know of a guy in LaCrescent, MN too that is pretty new but, seemed descent, friendly and trustworthy, although I havent utilized his service.
I will contact both before posting their information and their traveling range!

FARRIERS IN WISCONSIN
Do you need a Good farrier, or a farrier?
Sometimes farriers are like the Princess and the Frog... you gotta kiss a lot of frogs before you meet the Prince. From an old fairytale...I hope most of you get the gist.
Know your horse's feet and don't depend on the farrier to be telling you foot stories about your horse's feet unless you have some background knowledge on hoof structure yourself. There are plenty of sources out there, take a few evenings to educate yourself.
I had a "door to door" farrier stop at my place awhile back on a Sunday. It just so happened, I had a horse with the first signs of laminitis and coincidently my own farrier & vet had not returned my calls yet. The guy immediately put down my regular vet and farrier. #1 sign - a good farrier will not put down another in their own field of expertise, but offer suggestions to the customer how they can work together. #2 sign - this guy was going door to door looking for jobs.
The farrier continued on to other horse-folks in the area, and established ONE new customer who happened to be a client of my regular farrier. A few months later, the client called my regular farrier, saying "come fix my horse, he is now lame."
I sincerely hope everyone finds the best farrier that they can find for their horse's sake. If you are knowledgeable, you know when a farrier is taking too much off the toe or the heel, or paring into the frog. Be aware of how your horse's hooves grow and that even filing down the flares may make them lame. Don't depend on shoes to be a fix-it method in all cases.
I prefer no shoes for my horses, and over the last five years using the farrier I currently have, their hooves are strong, do not chip, have good growth and you can mess with their feet because they haven't been hurt or scared by the farrier.
Costs? Not inexpensive, but not overly expensive either. My farrier currently has many customers in a relatively small driving area, so does not need new customers. That's how good SHE is.

We finally found a GOOD farrier. Unfortunately he does not have a phone listing. We found our farrier through the Amish community. The Amish have always had a very good reputation with horses, from training, to farrier, to just about anything to do with horses. Horses are such a part of their lives, that they have become in my opinion, the professionals of horse care.
If you have an Amish community nearby, check with someone in that community about a farrier. Just be sure to respect thier way of life. We have found that Saturday's are the best time to contact someone in the community. Ladies, just remember it may be considered rude if a woman approaches an Amish man to even just ask a question.
Do some reasearch on the best way to approach without offending, and you will find a community full of people that always help each other, and if treated with respect, will help us outsiders too.

Re: FARRIERS IN WISCONSIN
The absolute BEST farrier around the La Crosse/Sparta area is Sam Pulhamus!! (608)792-8417 He really takes his time to trim & file the horse's hooves & is super about answering questions for newbies!! He is very personable & never makes me feel dumb for asking anything. He reassures me my horse isn't going to DIE just because he has a slight coronary band injury that always results in a quarter crack...LOL! (I am as protective & cautious over my horse as I am about my kids! Ol' Mamma Hen here! ~Can ya tell I am a newbie too?!) He doesn't charge ridiculas prices & will skip the farm call charge if there is more than 1 horse. I call others @ the stable to see if theirs needs a trim when mine does...others are glad to join in & skip the extra fee too!
He rides competatively and also trains his kids in speed gaming. He ran the OK Corral in the Ontario area for a year too...so he knows horses & their needs VERY well!
He is a fireman for his regular job...so be sure to get ahold of him about a week or maybe more before you need the trim so he can get you in on his schedule.
I've tried lots of farriers in our area & he is the BEST BY FAR!!! I won't have anyone else touch my horse from now on! He's even awesome with my attitudy appy who likes to give farriers 'the business'. He's been so naughty that he's landed himself into shoeing stocks before. He stands like a perfect gentleman for Sam if I hold his lead. That speaks VOLUMES to me!!!

Re: FARRIERS IN WISCONSIN
Is there anyone out there in the Madison or surrounding area that can do stud shoes? My daughter is going Novice this year and our regular farrier does not do them, nor does he know of anyone that does.
Thank you,
Dawn
