What this comes down to is, you really don't know if your ground meats are safe to eat. This is mainly attributed to processing machinery not being properly cleaned, or the ingredient being unsafe.
The remedy?...grind it yourself. Then you can insure that the equipment used in the grinding process is clean and sanitary.
I do this with all the meat I grind. Not only do I have my personal assurance that the grindings are safe to eat, I also have control over fat/lean content of the ingredient. Go to the store, buy your chuck steak, or round steak, mix and match...you can get your perfect ratio. Practice the same with the pork and poultry products.
I like to clean away any left over debris with soap and water, rinse with clean water, and then shoot it with my little steam cleaner. I'm meticulous about this sort of thing, having extensive experience in the food production/manufacturing industry.

Re: CDC: 1 death, 76 illnesses linked to ground turkey
I ate ground turkey last night. How long does it take before a person might have adverse affects from it?

One person's adverse is another person's diverse...or reverse..etc, etc.
Salmonella are bacteria that cause intestinal illness (salmonellosis) in humans, usually because they have eaten contaminated food. Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after being infected. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment. As with any disease causing diarrhea or vomiting, those infected should drink plenty of liquids to replace lost body fluids. This is particularly important with very young children and seniors. In severe cases, patients may need to be given fluids intravenously, which is usually done in hospital.
Salmonella poisoning is a form of food poisoning. Find more on the symptoms and treatments for Salmonella poisoning at the link.

Thanks Mark for sharing this.
I never buy ground turkey but just last week I was actually looking at it since there was a good sale on it at the store. It was much cheaper than ground beef but for some reason I put it back down. Glad I did.
Re: CDC: 1 death, 76 illnesses linked to ground turkey
I buy it to use for things like tacos or spaghetti in rolls from Walmart.. only $1.18 a pound roll. Already pre-seasoned for use.

So far no issues with the ground turkey I ate the other night. I think I am safe now.

Turkey meat is relatively fat and cholesterol free. Good meat for those that have to watch what they eat for medical/dietary reasons.
Turkey burgers might be kinda dry, but they maintain flavor despite the lack of fat.
Marinate a turkey tenderloin in some Worcestershire sauce, with a splash of soy sauce, and you have a really nice 'smokey' flavor.
Yes, turkey meat is suppose to be good for you but I do find it kinda dry. Thanks for the tip on adding flavor. I will try it sometime way after the scare of buying it now is over.

I mostly use ground turkey to replace ground beef in mexican casseorles or itallian dishes like lasagna, meatballs etc.
any dish that uses many spices to dominate the flavor.
If I want a low cholesterol patty I prefer ground chicken not inexpensive but healthy.
I think Worcestershire sauce, with a splash of soy sauce might add flavor but also way too much sodium to keep it healthy for those who need to monitor sodium intake. But I would gobble it up.
oops was the remark too foul?
still left without a right.

Low sodium varieties of these ingredients/products are available for those with dietary concerns and still want the flavor provided with the use of these sauces.
