Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

Has anyone here had Plantar Fasciitis?
Do you happen to know of any home remedies that actually work?

I have it & it hurts beyond belief!! I have had it for a couple months & OMG i sit in tears at times, especially when i first get up, whether it be first thing in the morning or just after sitting for a while.

IT HURTS! soooooo bad & i been to the doc for it twice... next step is cortisone shots to the heel of my foot & i been warned (and read online) that it can cause other issues, so i'd avoid it if i can.

I've done the suggested rest, stretching, ice, heat, massage, custom fitted shoe inserts, silicone heels in the shoes etc... doc put me on an anti inflammatory, because it swells up so bad by days end & makes it difficult to walk. It all helps for a bit, but the pain always comes back soon after.

I have watched videos & read a lot about it online & apparently it's very common.

wondering if any of you have had it or have any insight to what helps?

Plantar fasciitis causes the inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament which runs along the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia ligament is made of fibrous bands of tissue and runs between the heel bone and your toes and stretches with every step. Inflammation develops when tears occur in the tissue.

The most common complaint from plantar fasciitis is a burning, stabbing, or aching pain in the heel of the foot. Most sufferers will be able to feel it in the morning because the fascia ligament tightens up during the night while we sleep, causing pain to diminish. However, when we climb out of bed and place pressure on the ligament, it becomes taut and pain is particularly acute. Pain usually decreases as the tissue warms up, but may easily return again after long periods of standing or weight bearing, physical activity, or after getting up after long periods of lethargy or sitting down.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

You should try stretching and massaging your calf muscles before taking your first steps of the day. Avoid high heels and try icing the heel and ibuprofen to relieve the pain. Alternatively, you can try a night splint and / or HTP Heel Seats to relieve some of the pressure.

Here's a link to a sleep support (night splint) on Amazon:

Amazon.com: Futuro Plantar Fasciitis Sleep Support: Health & Personal Care Amazon.com: Futuro Plantar Fasciitis Sleep Support: Health & Personal Care

and HTP Heel Seats (also on Amazon, available in diff. sizes at this link):

You may also be able to find these locally as well.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

Thanks Dave, I have the heel seats & the night boot... the night boot helped, however it would hurt as soon as i had to walk without it & made it difficult to sleep, since i tend to move my legs around a lot in my sleep.

from the link you posted i think i may try this next...

Not dumb at all, the doc has me wrapping my arch, and ankle with an ace bandage, apparently it helps to keep the heel pulling upward rather than the foot arching the wrong way & causing more pain... with that i also walk around the house in the ugliest shoes ever made, crocks (i swore i'd never wear them, but kinda have to), it does help & when i'm just running to the store or whatever i'll wear the bandages & crocks (socks over bandage) with jeans, i look silly but it helps to get around with a bit less pain.. I even wore them when at the hospital & taking my son to the doctor to remove his tubes, i figure if the nurses & doctors are wearing them i wouldn't feel so silly, but i did lol

Thanks Hawkins

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

Ugh, heel pain. I know all about that and just try explaining it to people that don't have it. They just think you're being whiny. I can't stand for long periods of time without my heels hurting. I would take aspirin and it doesn't help at all. I've tried every arch support known to mankind. I've had custom ones from the foot doctor and I didn't care for them much. I've been to that foot store..is that the Footsmart one? I can't remember. I got those foot supports, but those only work somewhat and you have to wear them daily. If you don't stand daily, it's not a useful product.

I've tried anti-inflammatories that didn't help either. I've foot massagers and soaking my feet. These only provide some relief for a short time.

I've tried foot and leg exercises, but those didn't seem to work. I guess I should have done those longer and given it more time.

My problem is high arches and most shoes don't have much or any arch support. When my feet hurt that bad, I can't think about anything else. I'll be moving around, switching from foot to foot, or standing on the outer sides of my shoes just to get the weight off my heels.

My aunt once told me to get foot surgery done, but I didn't want to be hobbling around for months. Who knows if that is the answer.

This is one reason I can't work jobs that require lots of standing.

Just tie a pillow on each foot and walk around LOL. No one will even notice.

Like yourself i've tried sooo many things & nothing is making it hurt less. The Good Feet Store is where i got my fitted ones (after trying 100000 store shelf inserts) & like you said, it helps somewhat & only for a short while.

Everyone i spoke to or read about online, who got the cortisone shots to the heel say it's an instant fix & have never had pain again, however it causes some nasty side effects for a while... not really something i want to do, but if worse comes to worse i will.

I agree.. try explaining it to others who haven't had it & they just dont get it, the pain is so intense it's hard to function, but to not function isn't an option! I been walking on my toes/ball of my foot for a month now, but according to videos on planter Fasciitis, walking on the side or front part of the foot causes more damage & keeps it from heeling... it's habit now & it hurts not to!

wrapping the ankle & arch help some, but i have to wear the ugly crocks for the shoes to fit me, so i can only do it at home... however work is where i need the relief... this is why i thought maybe the harness looking thing on Dave's amazon link might work, may fit into reg shoes... maybe.

I honestly thought this was strange, but after looking it up online & talking to others i find it's very common... Thanks for sharing Blue, i'm sorry you have the pain as well.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

Here are some ideas for you:

I so understand the pain - I had this bad for 2 years and the pain is excruciating, especially in the morning.
The only house shoes I could wear were Crocs - they are soft cushy rubber. And I had to wear them for regular shoes too for a whole summer. Could not walk more than a block without having to sit down and almost cry from the pain of it.

Stretch those calves every day by balancing on a stair or something higher up where you can let the heels drop down.
Stop wearing any shoes with heels. (I have gone to Earth shoes with the minus heel.)
Massage the arches and even go get a therapeutic massage, let them work on the feet and calves. Also the spine area where those muscles are attached.
A chiropractor can also help with that.

Drink calcium magnesium at night, it is a natural muscle relaxant and handles acidity as well. The recipe is in the book "Clear Body, Clear Mind". (The purification program in that book is wonderful detox.)

Make sure you get plenty of salt and potassium in your body.

Epsom salt baths helped a lot.

Nerve assists helped a lot.

See if you might have Candida, this is how mine started. It was nutritional first, when the heels lose fat cushion while the rest of the body accumulated fat. It took a long time to get rid of the Candida and the heel fat cushion is slowly coming back - this is 3 years later. I am finally losing the belly fat that accumulated as the heel fat disappeared. It sounds backwards but that is how it happened.

Read Kevin Trudeau's book about weight loss, it is not just for overweight people but more nutritional information. He has pulled together everything on the subject and there is a lot in there about candida being a problem and how it affects the heels, that is how I knew what to do to fix mine.

Mine is still going away very slowly and the heels still hurt in the morning, but not as bad as they used to be. Mine was definitely nutritional.

I would only get shots or meds as a total last resort because chemicals affect the entire body and stay in the cells, never leaves without doing a total detox.

A friend had the surgery and told me she regretted ever doing it - that was when I started looking at alternatives for myself. It does take a long time, just don't give up, and you might have to change eating habits to handle it for good. Like no sugars or chemicals in the foods, etc. That is another thing I did. But I refused to give up coffee! (Just cut back a bit.)

Hope some of these things help?

Thanks Judy! I've done some of those, not all. No Candida here, The doctor mentioned that she had that problem & was glad to see it wasn't the cause of mine.

I did hear & read that the Earth shoes are a god send when it comes to this, however they are over $100 at the only place i found them here & online (tennis shoes or dress shoes), a friend said she seen them for $120 in Milwaukee, so i'm thinking they are expensive no matter where i go. OUCH! I needed a new microwave & bought one instead of the shoes. I will save & buy them if this other stuff doesn't work. Just so hard to spend $100 on shoes for myself, when i have so many other expenses to keep up with.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

I had this really bad in one foot and then it started in the other one. Getting up in the morning was a killer. I started celebrex about the same time for other reasons and it seemed to help a lot with the pain.

After many months of being careful, avoiding heels, resting my feet etc. etc. it finally started going away. But then it came back again. The one thing I can say I did different finally that I think made it go away and never come back? I started drinking Tahitian Noni Juice.

No joke. The stuff actually made me feel sick for about 3 weeks after I drank it but I stuck with it and my heel pain went away, my memory improved, I got off taking celebrex every day etc. I could only afford to take it for about 4 months then switched to an off brand I found at Sam's Club. NOT as good but I think it still helped.

I stopped taking it finally since to me it is difficult to pay for things for just myself but I think I will start again. It gives energy and in the Spring I always have worse allergies and arthritis for some reason. I think the cost is worth the benefits.

http://www.tni.com/united_states/eng...any/about.html

(you have to be careful when buying imitation and/or generic noni juice. It is not the same.)

I don't get pain when I wake up in the morning. That was never an issue. I just get it after standing for long periods of time, which would be more than 2 or 3 hours for me. It doesn't matter if I have on comfy shoes, the feet will still hurt.

TAHITIAN NONI INTERNATIONAL - About Tahitian Noni

(you have to be careful when buying imitation and/or generic noni juice. It is not the same.)

I had never heard of Tahitian Noni Juice, will check into it, thanks PK.

The pains after sitting for a while are bad, but i feel you on the morning pain, OMG i cant stand it... I got the night boot & it seems to help a bit, but once i take it off it was back full force, problem with me is that i only made it through one or two nights with the boot on all night, I'd end up taking it off at some point while i was asleep. I dont remember removing it, however i'd wake & find it accross the room LOL i think it bothered me so much i'd whip it across the room.

Thanks for the advise, will look into the Tahitian Noni Juice!

Latina, I was doing my volunteer time at the senior center today, and what do you think these two little old ladies were talking about? Your same issue, not that you are a little old lady, but the one was going on about how she soaks her feet in warm vegetable oil each night for a week, and takes 500 miligrams of magnesum tablets during that same week. Per her, the pain goes away, and stays gone for some time. So I had to ask her if it really worked, she swears up & down it does. I dont know about home remedies for these things, but you never can tell. What will it get you? Worse case scenario is some nice smooth feet, I wouldn't try walking across any sliperry floors though, now that I think about it; how will you get to the bathroom to wash them off? Oh well, maybe just the magnesium would help!

I've used bath oil beads in my foot soaks. Makes your feet softer.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

Not to get off the subject but I found that magnesium tablet also helped my tinnitus.

Here's another option:

Fox News Health Report with Dr. Manny Alvarez on Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) therapy. The PEMF-100 is the world's most powerful PEMF therapy device.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

I will check out the videos from home later today, since youtube is blocked at work.

I bought the tablets at walgreens last night, haven't started them yet.

I watched many videos on a medical journal site, some people mentioned home remedies & crocs were mentioned a couple times. I will get picked on here at work today, but i wore my crocs lol i feel silly

Helpful videos thanks Dave!

Blue it's funny you should mention that, co-worker told me just today that he takes calcium & magnesium, per doctors orders, for his constant ingrown toe nail pain... Thanks for the article, i was going to look it up tonight.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

I've taken calcium and magnesium for years, but it never helped my foot pain. Maybe I need to take more? I took it for other reasons, as part of my daily vitamins I take.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis: Suggestions?

wow, it's amazing how so many people are giving advice and trying to help out. it gives you hope in mankind doesn't it?

well i tried to read all the responses (briefly) so sorry if i'm repeating the same info., but here goes;

in my years of study i have found that treating just one part of the body, usually where the most pain resides, does not make the problem go away. in your case it's your foot, but you have to look at the bigger picture always.

treat the body as a whole and most definitely stay away from those nasty little cortisone shots and anti-inflammatory meds!

you're dealing with inflammation here, don't forget it is treatable. the hardest part is just trying to find out what really works for you. there's always a lesson in everything, even pain. i know.

you're body is capable of miraculous things, but sometimes we are just missing something and we need to nudge it along.

i think you're on the right track. i would stick to learning more about cooling & stimulating herbs and oils for topical use (spearmint, wintergreen, cucumber, ginger for circulation), icing and stretching is good (maybe even get a bosu ball to help with flexibility and strengthening the leg muscles that are antagonistic to the ones doing all the work).

inflammation of the ligaments or tendons is usually due to overwork, from daily wear and tear, or from a misalignment somewhere else in your body (hips, spine), and of course sometimes from an injury. either way don't forget that you have to send some good old fashioned positive thinking and TLC to your tissues and body as well. (water is the best conductor of energy and thoughts!

diet and cleansing! tissue builds up metabolic wastes right? so the body is constantly hard at work eliminating junk. sometimes we need to help it along and flush out the toxins ourselves. (epsom salt baths-externally, baking soda-externally for foot baths and such, and internally as well) muscles are red because they are full of arteries capillaries, and therefore have an easier time of getting oxygen rich blood and also getting toxins carried out faster. ligaments and tendons on the other hand, lack the high number of capillaries, therefore are white in appearance and have less oxygen and elimination function. you can create a pumping/flushing action through the use of hot and cold herbs and also ice treatments, as well as proper diet and exercise. don't overtax your body with foods that it has to work overtime to assimilate, digest, and eliminate.

treat the body as a whole and you will see that it's own mechanisms for anti-inflammatory and elimination will get back on track. get into yoga too, can't hurt. that should be useful in finding where the true misalignment is taking place.

the fascia is like one big blanket that cloaks us inside. when there is a kink at one end, you can feel it on the other. find the kink, treat the body... not just the foot.

good luck and many blessings!

Years of study in the medical field? You seem very knowledgeable... Thanks for the great advice!

I have an appt on the 9th with a specialist, to discuss cortisone shots... I been warned that i may not want to go that route due to my experiences with allergies to certain meds, but the pain is intense & causing swelling around my ankle now as well.

I have had issues the past few days due to anti-inflammatory meds prescribed for this issue... Why do you warn me about the cortisone shots? I hear good & bad about them & i just don't know if it's a risk i want to take... do you have some insight as to side effects & such when it comes to the shots?
