WEDNESDAY, Feb. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Offering hard, cold cash to smokers to spur them to stop their unhealthy habit helps more people give up cigarettes, new research finds.
The study, published in the Feb. 12 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, included a large group of General Electric Co. employees across the country who were offered up to $750 to give up smoking. After about a year, 14.7 percent of the group that was offered money were still smoke-free, compared to just 5 percent of those who weren't paid to kick the habit.
I have smoked in year's past.. don't smoke now and no one is allowed to smoke in my apartment. In fact, I have neighbors I won't let visit because they literally reek of smoke. When they have come by, I've had to spray afterward. Doesn't sound very neighborly but I just can't put up with it.

I read about GE & others doing the pay out to quit smoking & have worked for a company that saved us $60 a month on health insurance if we put down that we didn't smoke, of course they cant verify it, so i saved some money lol
Would i quit because i was paid... NO i would not, I'd quit for good reasons & in my own time... Now isn't the time.
I never smoked. I think GE should also reward those who don't smoke, otherwise it seems unfair that the non-smokers get nothing. So maybe I would take up smoking if I worked for them, then get the money when I quit lol.

LOL i agree... i thought that as well... why NOT say you smoke to get the cash? They cant prove otherwise, weird how some people do things.

Both of my parents smoked while I was growing up. I remember going for long trips in the car with them smoking and a window cracked open just a little bit, so I can imagine how much second hand smoke we inhaled as kids. Out of my seven siblings there are only two of us who do not smoke now.
In 1985 my father passed away at the age of 55 from lung cancer from smoking. He was diagnosed in May and he died in August...it was very painful to watch him suffer like that. My mom is 74 and still smokes. She used to roll her own cigarettes because it was cheaper, but she buys them now. The increase in the cost has not deterred her from smoking at all. I always let her know the day before I'm coming to her house so she can turn on her air filter so that it isn't quite as smokey smelling when I get there. She is considerate and doesn't smoke when she has company who aren't smokers. Even though there is no smoke in the air while we are there, our clothes always smell like smoke when we get home. If I breath in too much second hand smoke, I actually get dizzy and light headed...that's why I never hung out in smoke filled bars very much.
Neither my husband nor myself smoke although I did try it in high school a few times but I was like Bill Clinton and didn't inhale. My eldest son smokes and I think he started because his friends in high school smoked. Now he might quit if someone paid him enough, but then he would probably start back up again later. A few of my siblings quit for awhile by using Chantix but started smoking again after having to deal with stressful situations. No one is allowed to smoke in my house so when we have family gatherings they have to go outside if they want to smoke.

Sorry to read of your parents passing.
I lost my grandfather in the early 80's due to cancer & lost my grandmother in 1996 to lung cancer & Neither of them had ever smoked a day in their lives, though my grandpa was an alcoholic.
Both my grandfather and my dad died from lung cancer. My aunt and one uncle died from throat cancer.. all smoking related, I'm sure.
My mom used to smoke 3-4 packs a day and I've known a few others with that kind of habit.. expensive and unhealthy to say the least.
Sorry for your losses.
My eldest sister & her husband both smoke several packs a day... With cigs being $5 or more for a pack here, that is just CRAZY! they must go through $30 a day between the both of them! I can understand not quitting (to quit is easier said than done & usually said by a non smoker) BUT i could never afford to smoke even a full pack a day, well i spose i could afford it, but who would want to?? dang!

Did you know there is a third hand smoke? That's the residue from smoke left behind in furniture and carpeting and so on. That contains chemicals, too.

Hmmm....I guess that's why her walls and curtains are all yellow after 15 years of smoking in her house. It's scary to think that same stuff is in someone's lungs too!
It reminds me of some friends of mine that bought a house where the lady smoked. They had to repaint everything. They called the old color in the kitchen, "emphysema yellow" and the livingroom color was called "nicotine brown."
I know one thing that really stood out when we saw the Body Worlds exhibit at the museum last year was the heart and lungs from the smokers. The lungs were even black on the outside. The hearts looked old and worn out.

Better to pay people $750 now than $1000's later in medical bills..
for $750.00 I'd start smoking again and then quit.
Ok I did that , so who is going to send me my $750.00?

I think I should get $750 for breathing second hand smoke. Does that qualify?
YES and that means I get $1500.00
$750.00 for quitting and $750.00 for breathing in 2nd had smoke.
Does a smoker breath in third hand smoke?

I went to Walmart the other day, when checking out I seen a (1) pack of Marlboro cigarettes selling for over $7.00
Not that it's much less (average here is $5-$5.50) but walmart is the 2nd most expensive next to truck stops when it comes to smokes.
I was told just last night, by a friend from my old job (where they save the employees insurance $, for saying they dont smoke) that they now are offering the same kind of deal (save $ on insurance) to those who are overweight & want to do something about it.
They are offering to help them lose weight with company paid Dietitians and nutritionists & exercise classes, along with half price gym memberships for the princeton club! of course those who are not overweight are mad about it lol Personally i just wonder if they are wasting money making these offers, more so than savings for the employee.
What they should do is offer everyone half price gym memberships and nutritionists. Just because someone is thin doesn't mean they are in good shape or eat right. I like the idea and I would take advantage of it.
The company i work for now has a 24/7 access gym here on campus, it's about as big as one level at the princeton club & has pretty much everything an average gym has. However i cant bring anyone with me for security reasons, so i keep my gym membership, since i have friends willing to work out together there.
