Database: Wisconsin nursing home quality rankings
January 4, 2009
Nonprofit nursing homes are more likely to provide better care than their for-profit rivals, according to a USA TODAY analysis of the government’s first ranking of nearly 16,000 nursing homes.
The new Zagat-like rating system, released in mid December by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, assigns homes one to five stars for their quality, staffing and health inspections, plus an overall score.
The scores reflect tens of thousands of inspection records, complaint investigations and quality measures, such as how many nursing staff hours were provided each day to patients, how many patients developed bedsores and how many were placed in restraints. Much of the survey data were collected in 2008.
Use this search to explore quality ratings for nearly 400 Wisconsin nursing homes by entering a city, county or zip code.
The web delivers a lot of information and transparency.
Remember the day when learning what is linked to here would have taken a trip to a library or two - and then it might still not give as much information. Would have taken hours at best.
One day, we'll have this kind of info for hospitals and doctors, too.
It is too bad this site doesn't render distinct URLs after you've searched for a given county. If it did, I'd do links from each of our county forums to the respective search results, making those results much easier for Wisconsin people to find.
I have a few words about Nursing homes...One in particular! No name given! But if I ever have to go to one.....I garrentee.... I will never ever go there!
Nursing homes NEED CAM CORDERS!......Just like in the hospitals and GUARDS and for the use of law enforce-Er's to check up on things!
I have a friend who found out one of the nurses was throwing away her fathers pills because he could not swallow them, even though her father kept telling her, HE would ask the nurse to lift him up so he could swallow it ..she was to LAZY and threw the pills away ..so her father was getting sicker and he was not receiving his pill!
Then one day my friend came in and found his pills in the garbage after she had spoken with the nurse...The nurse would not explain what was happening, but she did say he threw them away...well one day My friend caught her throwing the pills away...after many frustrating days of talking with the head boss...the nurse was off for a few days with-out pay..but I believe that nurse is back....WHAT!!!!? Heck she wouldn't come near that place if I was the boss....That is Abuse and if he would have died it would have been a lot more! TRUE STORY!!!!!100%She also got wind of some other stories to and was she floored!
I know of that same place stealing was and still is a #one incident...we caught stuff like you would not believe disappearing and it was not all done by people who where relatives or visitors! One day a boss( No name but !))%true! came driving into the property and guess what was found under the dock...A huge bag of new towels and rags and personal clothing....well they found out it was missing and there was complaints and well that stuff was getting ready to go away! FIGURES!STEALING!
Oh yes! There was certain people there that knew of people who said if they got Cams they would leave......HMMMMMmmm! You got it!..10-4!
And the People who hang in gangs like groups and threaten people they don't like and... GOD if you do something nice for the residents your a hind end kisser and then threatened hopefully to make you stop or else!and YES They did stuff! Like damage your property and play head games and also do things that could cause harm to the residents! A book could be written....
I want to say if you ever take a family member to a Nursing home..do your home work...ask questions and even get in touch with a family or two who you might know a resident or someone else might know them..ask them a few questions of how their family member is being cared for..Thats your opportunity to do some detective work..YOU DEMAND GOOD CARE AND NOTHING LESS!...Don't just rely on the person who heads the place because they are Sellers and probably won't give you the whole story of the past problems or what they don't care about, like how many people actually work there to keep the place safe and residents well kept and whats broke down and whats leaking all over the floor ect........you know like not enough money to keep the place up..YEAH RIGHT! You pay over 200,000 thousand a year or More and 150 residents there..your in the cheap-o room and they don't have enough money to fix a broken window where bee's are getting in and the ants are crawling all over the room...Think again folks! Do the home work and don't let your family be put into a place that does not put the law in place and stand behind good care instead they let the little things that could do harm to your member and also let employee's be bullies and be detrimental to your mother or father or sister or whom ever!
Just don't let that happen and as I see the rankings do help..figures I see that place is in the downer spot...SAD!
And by the way..If you ever go into one and see anything going odd that does not fit that pattern of good care report it..because it could be to late for the resident if you don't!Go to the state guys not the head boss of the place....give them a "States Nursing home Inspector" (One they don't get the word told he's heading thier way...You know... so they can fix stuff before they drop in!)) surprise that will hopefully get them to straighten their act!
I do not give out any name and this information is no joke either!
All the more reason for the transparency of the ratings pk introduced here.
Sorry to hear about the terrible experience...
There's a commercial running on TV in the Milwaukee area asking for families of loved ones who were in one of a couple of local nursing homes to come forward if they suffered abuse, weight-loss, unexplained declines in health, etc....no doubt for a class-action suit.
Nursing home care is horrendous. You can expect to have employee's who barely pass high school...IF they even went that far...over populating as staff in nursing homes. It's a damn shame that our elderly have to expect such care in their last years of their life.
Good nursing home care is obviously important. Many of us will at some time either have to make a hard choice whether a loved one would be better off under supervised care or we ourselves may someday end up in a nursing home.
Important thread well worth bumping up..
Can anyone add their experiences in choosing a nursing home?
Can anyone relate something positive they've experienced regarding a nursing home?
I can add some experience feedback I've had from the places around here, I'll add it later, it's late now lol. I should warn ya it's not positive. Just bump the topic so I see it later
Two of my neighbors really should have either in home care or be in an assisted living situation or nursing home.. the one guy is 56, takes meds for schizophrenia, and his 78 yr old mom has to come over every day to give him his meds and clean house, etc. Talking to him, I can see he's more capable than he probably lets on.. he's just so used to everyone waiting on him hand and foot but he does have "his days".
The other woman is 61, grossly overwirght, and while she's mentally capable, physically she has alot of problems getting around. Her ankles are about the size of my thigh. To make matters worse, she also waits on this schizophrenic guy, hand and foot.. they go grocery shopping together, he makes her carry in all the groceries. He wants tea or coffee, she has to go get it. They even eat all their meals together tho they live in separate apartments.
Her home was so filthy because she can't clean (and she's a pack rat) she has to have her church group come in and clean because she regularly is threatened with eviction. She just got an in home health aide this month.
Which do you all see as better? Home health aide or nursing home?
I agree, even tho my girlfriend actually fits in that category (no HS diploma and doing home health care).. alot of disabled people live in my complex and have home health care aides that come by to assist them with their needs. I know personally of several who routinely do little to no actual work and take advantage of their clients. It's pitiful really..

My neighbor finally got a decent home health aide but her aide isn't allowed to drive her anywhere or help with her banking.. plus I've yet to see an aide yet that can grocery shop affordably.. my neighbor sends her aide to the store for some items and she will invariably buy the more expensive items. Seeing as my neighbor gets less than $80 in food stamps a month, it's important her aide knows how to shop for her.

I was just visiting my neighbor yesterday who is rehabilitating in a local assisted living center after having broken her arm. She said she absolutely loves it there! I spoke to several of the nurses who work there and they were all so friendly. I also watched to see how they cared for the other residents and was quite impressed with their quality of care. It is really a nice place and very home like too. Not at all like the county nursing home that is more like a hospital atmosphere. I can see why they have a waiting list to get in there.
I can't get over how much they charge for those places though. The one my neighbor is at is always full because it's nice and less expensive than the other ones around here...only $3,300 a month. Another assisted living center in town is $6,000 a month and I believe the county nursing home is even more expensive because it's not assisted living and the residents require more full time care since they don't get around as well. Two of my other neighbors are in the one that is $6,000 a month and with both of them there that means it is costing them $12,000 a month! Wow! It sucks to work all your life only to have it all go to pay for a nursing home in the end.
Nursing homes are expensive. How do they think people are going to afford that?
I don't know what the rehab hospital was charging a day for my husband's care, but the crappy group home they sent him to after that was charging $1300 a day! Now add that up per month. At that point he didn't even really need help with anything. Not sure where the money was going since he didn't get any rehab like they promised. Wait, I'm pretty sure I know where the money was going, probably to buy another diamond ring for greedy nurse.
I'm glad we didn't have to pay for any of this. We would have had to sell the house to pay for it all.
