Just what is going on with our food supply?
This is just another basic food product being tainted by eColi bateria.
Are we as a society getting lax in our ways?
or are we better at finding and communicating these issues?
This is scarry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
I love PB&J sandwiches

The black cloud does like to follow me around. I have Peter Pan Peanut Butter with that 2111 code on it.
My 16yr old has been sick since last week. Missing a lot of school. He's home again today. Just been real sick. Have been thinking it's stomach flu.
He loves peanut butter....I bought the 6# bucket from Sams Club. He was eating it still as yesterday.....until we saw the news report.
That is when we checked the can and I do have what they are recalling.
I called the Dr office and right now they dont have any protocal from CDC on what to do....that is what the nurse told me.
She says the symptoms will go away in 72 hours.........I said he's been sick since last week and he's been eating this peanut butter for a good 2 weeks, and was eating it yesterday.
She is suppose to be calling me back by 12:30 today.
I'm sorry to hear your son is not feeling well. It's a good thing that you read about the peanut butter and checked it so you can keep him from eating anymore.
I remember years ago when my oldest son (maybe around 6-7 years old) became sick with salmonella (spelling?) anyways, he was pretty sick for quite sometime. He wasn't the type that would stay down though and would go out and run and play as much as he could and then come in and throw up or run to the bathroom with diarrhea..and then try to go out again. It lasted several weeks or more until he was fully recovered. (he's 26 now so all is well). I thought it was from the sausage from the local Pizza Hut (he was the only one that ate it) but it was also at the same time they were recalling milk. Not sure but if it was the sausage he only ate it one time to be sick for that long. ;(
what I have read, if you become sick you are suppose to keep the container and give it to your local health department so they can do testing on the product. I think I would not turn the product over without some form stating you had the contaminated product or a letter stating they will contact you with the findings just in case there is a suit or settlement sometime down the road.

Yipes!!! I am not impressed, they should have an immediate response like stop eating it,watch for yadada is this happens go to the emergency care. I would call you family doctor, while it may not be nothing more than letting it pass it could accumulate in his system and he may need antibiotics or something to help combat the taited pb. I would think plenty of fluids will help flush things out.

Just ran across this information in an article I was reading concerning the PEANUT BUTTER:
To get a refund, consumers should send lids and their names and addresses to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 57078, Irvine, CA 92619-7078. For more information, call (866) 344-6970.
Thanks for the info PK. I, too, have the tainted peanut butter. I bought it last week to make peanut butter bars for a poker game this weekend. Thankfully I hadn't gotten around to making them before this story came out on Thursday. I saved the lid and through the unopened jar away. I'm glad I heard about this in time. I could have gotten a lot of people sick!
I think it's ridiculous that you have to mail in the lid for your refund instead of being able to go back to the store. Mailing the lid alone won't be exactly free. I figure close to $2 (for envelope and postage) for my $4 jar of peanut butter. Doesn't really seem like a great refund. Maybe they'll reimburse for postage too, who knows.
Carol, so sorry to hear about your son. Hopefully it is something that will quickly pass. Give him our best wishes from those of us here at the Bubbler!
Our regular family doc kept saying there was no need to come in. I kept telling her how sick he was. They were acting like I was over reacting.
I kepts saying you dont understand he's been sick since last week. He was eating the pb when it came across the news. Ironically pb is one of the only things he's able to eat where his stomach wont go into turns and he vomits.
Got bad last night and took him to urgent care where they gave IV fluids and put him on CIPRO 500mg.
Thanks for the info on sending in for a refund. Mine was that huge 6# container from Sams for $15.00
Also I'm going to see about sending in some for a sample...but they will not get the whole container. My instinct is telling me to hang onto it for future reference.
Carol
I have a jar of GV peanutbutter with the code beginning with 21111...and I also have another brand with a code beginning with 21111.... It's neither GV, or Peter Pan.
Keep an eye peeled for these codes on other brands. Just because the label says, "BRAND NAME" does not mean that it was made by a particular company. Food is produced, and put on the market. Then brokers buy a certain number of food lots, and sell them to whichever label needs that particular productl.
For example, a certain company might can vegetables. They can a certain amount of cases. There is a certain number of cases in a lot. A broker will purchase a certain number of lots, and sell them to another company that puts their label on them. A brand name really means nothing. It has to do with the process used in producing the finished product, in this case canned.
Ever heard of ISO 9000?
I hope your son finds some relief, soon.
We also discovered we had this peanut butter for our business.
We used ours for 3-4 weeks now and had maybe some issues? We bought this from Sams Club, and Sams says they are not recalling their stock because the best by date does not match. But ours is not the same as their new stock with the 2111 code and they have said they will refund in full.
Con Agra Foods or our county health dept. has not yet responded to my submitted codes of this product yet.
Unfortunately, as a Adult Family Home, I now have lots of paper work to deal with because of this recall.
Just after 2 days of my son being on CIPRO for the salmonella he was doing a lot better. Today one would never know he's been so sick.
I stopped at Pick N Save today and grabbed a big jar of Skippy and when my son saw it he said to never buy Peter Pan PB again!
This jar will be gone in a few days. He loves PB
Salmonella found in the ConAgra Plant
As a follow-up to the recent Salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting an extensive inspection of ConAgra's Sylvester, Georgia processing plant. Samples collected by the FDA revealed the presence of Salmonella. The fact that FDA found Salmonella in the plant environment further suggests that the contamination likely took place prior to the product reaching consumers. Last week, tests by several states identified Salmonella in many open jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter recovered from consumers. In these instances, the Salmonella found in the plant and in the open jars matched the outbreak strain recovered from consumers who became ill.
I ate some peanutbutter today. After a couple hours, it felt like I had a rock in my stomach. I did some sitting for awhile, and checked the jar. Sure enough, 2111....
Oh well, I'll just ride it out!

Was it Great Value or Peter Pan or something else?
I'm surprised after your comment earlier about finding some in you kitchen that you didn't check this jar before you ate it.

Keep an eye peeled for these codes on other brands.
Goes to show one can't be to careful when there's an alert going on.
I'm "rushing"it through my system with some prunes.
It was GV...bought it, and did'nt look at the code.
I'll be looking at codes more closely from now on.
Just 'toughen it up'. I can handle it.
I just buy skippy all the time and so far no where does it mention a problem with the good stuff.
I never ever buy Peter Pan PB...but my friend convinced me it was such a great deal. 6# of PB for $15.00 compared to the Skippy.
Then the $68.00 for the CIPRO so my kids could get over the salmonella and I'm still waiting for the Urgent Care bill.
Just back from Wally-World. I did'nt see any GV Peanut Butter on the shelves. I went with the Smuckers Natural. It has a half inch of oil on top. Almost as good as if you made your own. To go along with the excellent peanut butter, I also bought 3 lbs. of dark chocolate.
~Food~
Just to let you know....Dark chocolate? We have been selling a ton of candy outside of the stores for fundraisers and I just got another supply today...and there is a new M&M now with dark chocolate for those that are dark chocolate lovers.
But chocolate and peanut butter..mmmmmm nothing better.
