Just read a report last night that the only known salmonella outbreak in peanut butter (besides this one) was in Australia during the mid-1990s —

It was blamed on unsanitary plant conditions. The experts are thinking this latest outbreak may also be due to unsanitary conditions since roasting of the peanuts at such a high degree would kill any bacteria that may be present. So it must be coming from outside of the cooking process.

Isn't there quality control that visits these plants that makes our food to ensure a clean environment?

I never ever buy Peter Pan PB...but my friend convinced me it was such a great deal. 6# of PB for $15.00 compared to the Skippy.
Then the $68.00 for the CIPRO so my kids could get over the salmonella and I'm still waiting for the Urgent Care bill.

It is sad to write to Con Agra and my local health dept. and get no reply at all about this issue but I see more on the internet than from the source.

But..because we're in health care business, I had paperwork for 3 days about this issue.....plus phone calls.
I buy another bulk brand now but still am weary.
I love peanut butter!!!!!!!!

Good thing no one here got real sick or died !!!

I think my daughter made home made peanut butter before. I'll have to ask her. But like everything else it's just that much easier and faster to pick a good jar up at the store.

I think the day of making everything 'homemade' is being lost. I do remember back when I use to make our own bread and not with a bread machine either. lol Now I pick up all our bread at the store and even pass the bread machine up. lol

Will post how to make peanut butter if I can find something on it.

I can understand that, I am in the same boat. I just made the comment because if you did make your own, you controll the ingrediants.

When I was unemployed, living alone and attending school, I would make my own bread with a a machine. I would put the ingrediants together and run it while I slept. I would wake up to fresh bread , so I hade more time to study and not worry about running to the store as often.
I also drank powdered milk because I could mix a batch before bed and wake up to ice cold fresh(fresh mixed) milk.

Both the bread (Dakota Brand) and powered milk were about half the cost. I ate peanut butter sandwich often but used the brand that is in the dairy section to keep refrigerated, no sugar all peanuts.
Just think of that fresh bread smell in the morning. It would make me want to eat the whole loaf.

ooooh the fresh smell of baked bread. I live a few blocks away from a bakery and get that smell all the time.

When I use to make bread it was from scratch, the yeast, kneading, the whole nine yards of work. lol It was fun though and I use to do it quite often. There is nothing better than eating it when was still warm with lots of melting butter on it. Makes wonderful sandwiches too.

I also use to use powdered milk since it was alot less in money. I will have to check it out in the store next time I go shopping to see how much it is now. I'm sure they still make it? If you mixed it really good and got it very cold it wasn't bad. Many time I would pour it into the gallon of regular milk to make it go further. lol The kids never knew.

Peanut Butter was a big thing back when my older kids were young. I use to make Peanut Butter and Apple butter sandwiches. Or smear peanut butter on crackers for a snack.

Oh the good days....

I have a peanut butter recipe posted in the recipe box. It's under "H" for Homemade Peanut Butter.
http://www.thebubbler.com/modules.ph...d=194&offset=1
The recipe is of a healthy nature...as healthy as peanut butter can be, that is.

Enjoy
