One year another aunt of mine put together a reunion and had a good turnout. That was more fun as an adult, but we decided if if we did it again there would be some games or competitions to liven it up.
My dad's side is big, but my mom's side is small.
On my mom's side we used to get together around Labor Day for my grandpa's birthday, so that was like a little family reunion. Those were always fun since the weather was nice and we could play different lawn games like badmitten or Jarts. My mom's side is more fun anyway. Since my grandpa died we only got together once or twice like that. I wish we would do that again.
Now the way my neighbor's family does a reunion is done right. They have a blast. It's a different location in the country every other year depending on which family member is hosting it. It lasts a whole weekend and they sometimes do a theme night where everyone wears a Hawaiin shirt or another theme. One year my neighbor was the host and we got invited. They had tents set up all weekend and had a pig roast. I brought along our yard glass to pass around the beer with and the guys had so much fun with it. I'm surprised none of the other neighbors got mad with all the noise they made late at night. They were under that tent partying until the wee hours. Then my neighbor's son's friend asked who the girl with the pretty green eyes was, meaning me LOL. Geez, I'm like 10 years older or better than him. Oh, and that was before they had a lot to drink.

I have to ask what a "yard glass" is? I've never heard of one.
Your neighbor's reunion sounds like some that we have. Three of my sisters and I take turns hosting our reunions and each one of us does things that are unique to just our reunion.
Last year, my sister held it at their campground in the Wisconsin Dells. That was fun as we rented cabins and stayed over night. When it's my turn to host our family reunion at my house, I do games for everyone with prizes.
We try to keep the games simple for the little kids. Last time, I did a ball toss game where they had to get the ball into each consecutive bucket (like the one played on the Bozo show). They still got a prize even if they didn't make it to the last one. I usually just buy a bunch of inexpensive stuff at the Dollar Tree and then let them pick out their own prize.
For the older kids, I have a bean bag throw thing that you have to knock the numbers over on it that I picked up at a garage sale. They have to get up to a certain number before they can get a prize.
For the teens, we do Karaoke and that is usually a big hit with them. If they even try to sing a song, then they get a prize. Lots of the adults do it too and it can get pretty hilarious after a few beers! In the past I've done timed trivia contests where who ever finishes first and gets the most right wins the prize. The adults and some of the teens like playing that. Another game we've done is the balloon pop. I filled up balloons and put them in bags opposite five or six people seated on chairs and when I blew the whistle they had to run to the bag, grab a balloon, take it back to their chair and sit on it until it popped. Then they had to run and grab another until they were all gone. Whoever finished popping all their balloons first was the winner. It's not as easy as it sounds, because I filled some of them only part way to make it harder to pop them, and I also slipped in a few with helium in them so when they sat them on their chair they floated away and they had to chase after them! It was a blast to watch! LOL Another game that all ages love to play is Musical Chairs. No matter how old you get, that's always still a favorite of everyone. And of course it wouldn't be a family reunion without our yearly volleyball game and all the delicious pot luck food!

Our family reunion will be at the end of June this year at my sister's in Mt. Horeb. Next year it will be my turn to host it again.
