In your opinion, where is the best place to live in your wonderful state? I have been doing a little reseearch on housing prices and cost of living but I'm still confused. I would like a small town or rural setting but still have reasonable assess to health care and other services. In other words, I would like somewhere where I don't live so close to my next door neighbor that I can hear their tiolet flush but I don't want total isolation either.
If you're willing to drive, Jefferson county would put you between Milwaukee and Madison. Housing is considerably cheaper in Jefferson county than it is in Dane, Waukesha or Milwaukee counties. The catch is that gas prices are awful and public transportation is lacking.
If you're looking to make Milwaukee your central location for shopping and healthcare, you can look at Ozaukee, Washington, Racine or Kenosha counties for housing. These counties still have nice rural areas. I live in Waukesha county but it's not very rural anymore and housing costs have gotten very high.
I know a lot of people work in the Twin Cities and live in Wisconsin, but I'm not very familiar with the MN/WI border areas!
Property prices in Sheboygan County are pretty high, but Plymouth is a nice little town. The people are generally friendly and it's only an hour or so from Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Door County.
The best place? Right where I'm at. Central Wisconsin. Country is beautiful, retail, industry, reasonable housing, camping, fishing, swimming, all within minutes. The northwoods is definitely nice, but the property costs and lack of industry are the only drawback.
My wife and I are thankful everyday for what we have.
KENOSHA. I love it here. Beautiful beaches, parks, plenty of stores, good schools, more parks, bike trails, picnic areas, and lots of events and things to do. All the stores you need to shop, and places to eat. You are close enough to Milwaukee to commute if needed and the Illinois state line if you want to visit there.
If you want to have alittle less city just go south alittle or west a few miles and you have best of both worlds. Less city, but close to the city.
Appleton, by all means. It's NOT Milwaukee, It's not Madison, It's NOT Green Bay. It's urban, yet out of the "metroplex" loop. Folks are friendly (as least as friendly as Wisconsin folks can be to "come'here's) and the area is lovely and close to all the ammentities. Try the Fox River Valley !

HUNGER: DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS?
It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition.....
I could say Appleton
I could say kenosha
I could even say Hudson
My wife and I have been many places in Wisconsin and have not found a place we did not like. It is all in what you want. I also think it is all in the attitude, if you want find the negative, you will find it no matter where you are.
I'd say pick a place and go with it. If it does not work out ,move on.
Now for the hungery , well "Fly like an eagle" was the first thing that came to my mind.
Anytime you over eat think of the consequences when there are so many hungry people.
Just look at what gets thrown out at one of those all you can eat places.

Hungersite is on my daily round of "click to donate" sites. Considering it's free and only takes a couple minutes, there's no reason we can't all be visiting them every day.
Actually, I think I will start a forum thread for people to list "click to donate" sites on...
I'd have to say Rome Wisconsin.....Jefferson County. I moved here from Milwaukee 7 years ago. At first it was a shocker ~ no McDonalds down the street, no Dunkin Donuts up the block ~ Dont run out of anything, and make a list when you go shopping.
I am still close enough to civalization, but far enough out that I dont hear neighbors, sirens, or trains.
I'm surrounded by 1500 acres of DNR Land. Have wildlife in my yard all the time. It's just great.
I also LOVE the schools out here. My kids have never done so well. Great teachers, great atmosphere.
Carol
I work a lot with Lucy from the Fon Du Lac Humane Society.
I take in overflow rabbits, small caged critters, and potbellied pigs from them
That's about all I know about FDL.
Carol
Why not Fond du Lac? I've always had good time there. The people are really nice and the restaurants are good. It's a pretty big city but has small-town friendliness.
My "not" city would be Waukesha. I lived near the downtown area. Drunken parties from Carroll College kids, careless slumlords, neighborhood nutcases, a high concentration of sex offenders, petty crime and property damage just aren't for me. Obviously not all college kids party and not all landlords are careless, but I had enough bad experiences to never, ever want to go back there.
Well, because Fondy is full of two faced back stabbers that dont think twice about it!!
Dont trust anybody here!!
hmmmm..i applied so many times at the HS here, i have 5 dogs and had a few litters of pups and kittens and had every animal there is, but no, not good enough!
Thats another thing, try finding a job here===impossible!!
Ever think it could be just your attitude? oh..sorry guess I should not point that out....
Anyways, Fond du Lac and the area surrounding it is quite pretty. I've camped up there before and also visited and shopped in the area. We always found everyone pretty friendly. Maybe we are just lucky to run into nice people each time we come up.
I was so lucky driving thru FDL back in 2002. I had to go to their humane society to pick up over flow bunnies. It was the first time driving a "new" (used) van I had just purchased because the local sheriff here took away my car (another story).....
So first trip with this van and I did not know the feel of it. Well coming back from the HS with the buns I get pulled over. Find out I'm doing 78 in a 55!! OMG I honestly had no clue.....I said to the cop I was just trying to keep up with traffic. He says ~ No you were trying to win the Daytona 500. So I tell him the story of why I had to get the van, first trip with it. Other car shook when I hit 55 yadda yadda yadda....explained abcessed testicles and sheriff....oh it's a long story......showed him the paper work.
He let me go on a warning and I had to promise to use cruise control the whole way home.
FDL has not been bad to me.

I moved out here with this beater car......a calais. It was great. Never needed to go in for serious repairs in 8 yrs. I bought it with a crack in the windshield, but it was below the bottom of the windshield wipers....Never once a problem in Milwaukee. I put gas in it and changed it's oil and it ran just fine.
Then after a year of living out here and by now everyone knows who the "Pig Lady" is..... (my plates read Pig ResQ and I had tons of pigs in the back window). I rescued a sick little pig I suspected of having pnemonia and a hernia.
Took him to the vet, and we started treatment for pneumonia. Tried a fine needle aspiration on a testicle and didn't draw up any fluids.....but vet suspected abcessed testicles over a hernia.
Once the pnemonia was gone we were going to perform surgery and fix these abcessed testicles.
It was a long day and I was tired, it was hot, and I wanted to go down the road 1 mile so I could get a soda from our local tiny store that charges 4x more the normal price......
I drive past the sheriff and I see in my mirror he is turning around in the middle of the road. Odd I thought....never any action in the tiny village of Rome...wonder what is up. I park at the little store and hang out inside a bit talking with all the locals. Was in there a good 15+ minutes.
Come out and that sheriff is parked right next to my car. Seems he was waiting for me.
He's a new sheriff ~ Officer "T" ~ will never forget his name :?
He says "you have a crack in your windshield"
me ~ yeah, I know that. It's been there since I bought it
him ~ impossible, this windshield is compromised and dangerous
me ~ I laughed out loud at him ( I found out you should not do that to a new sheriff with a point to prove)
him ~ where and when did you purchase this
me ~ (in a blowing him off type voice cuz I was still clueless at this point)
Milwaukee, several years ago. Cops have never had an issue with my windshield. The crack is below the wipers
him ~ you know I could have put on my lights and siren and pulled you over and embarrassed you in this village.
me ~ (still clueless, must have been the heat) laughs at him again and says embarrass me?!! Not! I'm dealing with a pig with abcessed testicles right now.
(seems he thought I was calling him names because suddenly he was pretty mad at me.....)
him ~ I'm writing you a repair ticket and you have 72 hours to comply
me ~ (still seeing this as a joke) yeah right. I'm not fixing that. The car is not worth a new windshield. Hell give me a ticket for the seeping gas line while you are at it.
him ~ I thought I smelled gas
me ~ (just a dumb blonde at this point, but now my friend is outside telling me to shut up and I wont) shoot my window is broke, it dont roll down, my seat belts have never worked, hell I dont even have one on the passenger side, you cant even open the passenger door from the inside, you have to roll down the window and open it that way.
(friend still trying to shut me up and drag me in the store)
him ~ your license plate is not suppose to be on the floor
me ~ where do you want me to put it? I dont have a place to hang it up front. I have one on the back that is enough.
(friend now dragging me in to store)...... Ok have your fun I'll be inside having a donut. You want to join us? (I thought I was being friendly because we were inside with soda and donuts. Didn't know everyone was at the store for a gossip hour)
him ~ Tell your friend I could have turned on my lights and created attention this way.
me ~ blurting out ~ and laughing ~ I told you I'm dealing with a pig with abcessed testicles you aint going to bother me one bit
Well, did I ever get a list of things to be repaired....he made sure he wrote down everything I told him to!
I had 72 hours to comply. Again told him I was not going to fix one thing. He then informed me if I didn't he'd have my license suspended until I did.
Now I realized he was a jerk with a point to prove.....
So I called and got extenssion after extenssion until I could no more. Called in for the last time and Officer "G" answered. Told him I was junking the car and was not going to fix all those teeny tiny things wrong with the car cuz it just was not worth it.
Sort of funny cuz he says to me "Do I know you?" No I tell him
"have you ever lied to me?" No I tell him. "Do you have a new vehicle?"
No I tell him, but will be getting one in a few days thru Gaugerts.....
that's all he needed to hear. All the violations and warnings were dismissed...and I got myself a mini van. Fits more critters anyhow!!
So as for the pig with abcessed testicles. Went in for surgery and we cut into to scrotal sack and here his intestines were adhered to the sack and we sliced into his intestine as well. Further surgery to repair that.
And my vet gave me a pat on the back and said "You were right all along, I was wrong" So I said ~ "want to hear my story about this pig and his abcessed testicles?"
LOL!!!

That is a very interesting story. I worked with a friend for years that drove 50 to 60 miles a day one way into work. Because of this distance he would use older cars that were on their last legs, mostly old volkswagons. He drove a section of Wisconisin Hwy that had many 18 wheelers and would get a cracked/chipped windsheild at least once every six months. This got old and inconvieniant so he let a crack go one time, in the winter no less. He drove it cracked for about 2 months when one day he came into work saying you will not believe what happend to me on the way into work. He was driving into work in the middle of there to here (rural area) when his windshield fogged over and then exploded and landed in a million pieces in his lap! Needeless to say it was startling and very chilly for the reamainder of his drive into work. I never let a craked windsheild go for any longer than it took to get it fixed after that.

OH WOW!!! That would freek me out as well. I truely dont believe my windshield was compromised as the sheriff tried to make it out. I drove that car for years and the crack never grew and I did get hit with rocks etc while driving. I drove everywhere doing rescue work. Always on the road, different states etc.....

Actually, having thought about this throughout the day *I know, I know...I need to get a life.. :P * I think another very good location to consider is
Rice Lake.
1) it has a public transportation system (mini buses)
2) it has a very good hospital/clinic affiliated with the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, MN. (very positive rating for hip replacement outcomes)
3) it has a Norske Nook restaurant, among others
4) it has a WalMart
5) it has a Farm & Fleet
6) it has a large IH machinery dealer just south of town
7) & it has a lake... 8)

Fond du Lac is a beautiful city with friendly people. It's a well kept city with lots to offer. We're in the mid-way point of the major cities: Milwakee, Green Bay and Madison are an hour away. Appleton and Oshkosh are even closer.
I definitely wouldn't recommend Oshkosh, the city is a dump.
