Well, the subject for this forum IS Dept of silly questions. And I haven't been in WI since I was 2 and my memory doesn't go back that far...Are there fireflies in WI? Poisionous snakes?
Wisconsin has twenty one types of snakes including nineteen non-venemous species and two venomous species, four of which are endangered and one of which is threatened with extinction.
Lightning Bugs are the same as Fireflies. The Firefly Family is technically known as the Lampyridae.
They are beetles and part of a scientific family that contains the largest order of living things—290,000 species at last count. In fact, there are about 136 different species of fireflies illuminating earth’s summer nights.
I've got a goofy story about fire flies. When I was a young boy, growing up in the country meant you had to find ways to entertain ourselves. One way was to camp outside (meaning we slept in an unused chicken coop) and catch fire flies, put them in a gallon glass jug, and fill it up with pee. You heard me, pee in a bottle of fire flies.
As many of you know, I'm not in Wisconsin but we have a big pasture in back of the apartment complex and at night it's usually alight with fireflies.. the kids were out catching them a couple nights ago..
Sorry I know many like to smash them to see them glow, but I never could see doing that. I have always thought they were such unique little insects and enjoy watching them in the yard at night.
Fireflies are one of my favorite insects. They are so fun to watch and have their own personal light show. I never smashed them either, never even thought of it. I just tried to catch them and bring their light show into the house. I never worked because they never flashed indoors.
A few years ago I rescued a firefly from a spider web because I saw him flashing constantly in the web. I felt sorry for it and he even flashed as he sat on my finger while I picked the webs from him so he could fly off. It was cool and I felt like I did my good deed for the day. Let the spider find some gnats to eat instead.
Have to love summer with the fireflies flashing, crickets singing, butterflies fluttering around and watching dragon flies flying around like little helicopters.

What a great story blue.
I personally love dragon flies and butterflies. Have many of photos of butterflies but my goal is to get a few really good close ups of dragon flies. They are always so quick it's hard to take a pic of them. lol
I have lots of stories of animal rescues. Sometimes I so interfere with mother nature, but I can't bear to see something get eaten in front of me. Like the time I rescued a sphinx moth from a spider web (poor thing was fluttering madly trying free itself) or another time I stopped a water snake from eating a frog. I know, I know, but I felt sorry for the soon to be victims.
If I see a turtle in the road, I will stop to pick it up and put if off to the side. Once I was taking a picture of a sandhill crane that wanted to cross the road. I saw cars coming and ran behind the bird to hurry it up so it didn't get hit.

Yes we have fireflies in Wisconsin.
When I was a kid we used to catch them and put them in a quart jar. I can still remember the first time when I was about five, my brothers and sisters (six of them) and I were outside catching lightning bugs and my mom called us to come inside. I was so entranced by the "shinning bugs" that I didn't hear her, but my siblings went in and I was left out all by myself. I was content sitting there holding the jar and watching the lightning bugs so didn't realize I was alone. It was almost an hour before my mom realized I was still outside! LOL The bad part was I got a spanking for not coming in when I was supposed to.
Yeah...if you've ever stood in a swarm of fireflys, it's absolutely amazing. It's probably the closest thing that I will ever experience to "flying through the stars"...LOL!
Well it's October now and I think this is the first year we saw very few fireflies. Started to wonder if we were going to even hear crickets but finally hear some now at night.
I just saw some fireflies about a couple of weeks ago. I was surprised to see any in Sept. yet. There wasn't many fireflies here last year either. I think the amount of rain and the temps must affect that. It was dry last July and Aug. if you remember that. This year it was cool and somewhat dry.
Crickets I've heard since early Aug. Not sure if they are still out there since it's been crappy out and not much time spent outside.
