snow... bleh

I had scheduled that the first day I saw snow I would put up the winter theme for this site... I think I'm going to pretend like it doesn't exist. When Thanksgiving is over, I'm going to put it back to the fall theme and pretend the snow doesn't exist...

Maybe if we all refuse to believe in it, it will go away...

...ok, maybe not.

(I don't really mind the snow so much; it's really the cold that bothers me).

I'm not a native Wisconsinite. What sort of things do you do around here when the snow starts flying? Any regional/childhood traditions? Mine is cookies. As soon as it's cold enough for snow, it's cold enough to use the oven without driving everyone out of the house. That means Grandma's frosted sugar cookies and Mexican wedding cookies. What are some of yours?

Since today was the first day this season with a few flakes, the Wisconsin tradition is to automatically drop your speed while driving by 15 MPH. If you're in a 25 MPH zone, go 10 MPH. Make sure you swerve in panic, too!

It's funny because it happens every year. You'd think we could drive in snow by now! We should follow the lead of the Pacific Northwest... shut everything down when you get three inches! Could you imagine Wisconsin calling snow days for a mere three inches?

No more shorts and sandals for me. Now it’s the heavy parka and boots. Brr.... Now my sister and I will begin to feed the wild birds and we'll be bringing out the heated bath for there enjoyment.

Make sure to check out this local distributor for our winged friends.

Winter-Storm and Blizzard Basics

Winter-Storm and Blizzard Basics

Winter storms consist of wind, rain, freezing rain, sleet or snow. They can have different effects depending on how much precipitation falls and in what location. For example, in the South, a dusting of snow can be dangerous, while a larger snowstorm would be necessary to cause problems in the North.

A blizzard is an extreme winter storm. The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a condition in which winds are 35 miles per hour or more and visibility is less than one-quarter mile because of falling and/or blowing snow.

Winter storms can cause:

Low visibility:
Falling and/or blowing snow, falling sleet and freezing rain reduce visibility. This makes it difficult to see and dangerous to drive during a winter storm.
Low temperatures:
Low temperatures during a winter storm can be dangerous. The effects of the temperature are compounded by the wind-chill factor. The wind-chill factor is how cold a person feels because of the combination of the temperature and wind. It feels colder when the wind blows because the body loses heat faster and because moisture evaporates faster, which also cools the body. The low temperatures are responsible for the dangers of hypothermia (drop in core body temperature) and frostbite(freezing of body tissues).

Heavy snow or ice accumulation makes driving and walking dangerous during and after a winter storm because of slippery roads. Such accumulations also cause damage by downing power lines and trees and by causing floods. Overexertion from people shoveling snow or trying to walk through deep snow can lead to heart attacks.

In addition, winter storms can force people to use alternative sources of heat such as kerosene heaters. If these heaters are not working properly or if people use them inappropriately, there is a risk of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

re: snow

I love snow. The more snow we get the better my rafting trip gets.

There is no real way for anyone to accurately predict what the water level will be on any given day throughout the year, typically the water is at it highest in the Spring months (April-May) then the levels gradually decreases as the summer runs on. The river levels can rise as much as 4 inches for every 1-inch of rain that falls into the water shed and cam fall up to an inch per day when there is no rain. That is until the river reaches -3 on the gauge. Then the river only loses 1/10th -1/20th of an inch per day. There are many other factors which effect the water levels such as snowfall, accumulated snow and ice on the ground, ice levels in the river, frost depth and the ground water table levels.

My goal is a +24 on the river this year, last year when we went is was at +20 we went in 2man rafts...this year I am attempting a funyak trip.

WooooooooooooooHoooooooooooooo!!!!
Let is snow...but it looks like warmer weather is headed our way.

Early October. Forecast already has snow predicted. I can't wait. The sooner it gets here, the sooner it goes away.

I have no idea what you are talking about .... I just hope"funyak trip" is not a panic run to bathroom!!!!!

I am mixed I used to love snow more when I went skiing but now my wife does not like heights anymore so we stopped skiing.
Then there is that first snow fall where every snomoblier goes crazy but it never lasts long enough  and soon the trails are closed and the snow is gone but the cold remains.
I think we should have a rule if the snow is gone the cold should be gone too!!!

I do however love the idea of a snow day where you stay in with Hot Chocolate by a warm fire and watch the snow fall. Then watch movies till your eyes pop out or do a jig-saw puzzle or play a board game or just take a nap when you feel like it .

j10asen,
I am a whitewater rafter and what I am referring to is the water level for the river during spring thaws in May and April.
The more snow that falls and stays on the ground during spring thaw, affects the river levels to as much as 1-5 feet above bank level or more just before opening rafting season.
A funyak is a inflatable kayak and a it is more fun than a traditional raft because the control is in the one person instead of 2 to 8 other people control your destiny down the explosive rapids of spring rafting.
I sure hope I never have a panic bathroom attack while rafting.

I so second that. Too bad puny human laws don't really mean anything to the physical laws that govern the seasons

Oh, and I just want to add, there will NOT be a winter theme on this website until at least November. I'm sticking with my UP fall pics and then Halloween/Samhain, and then MAYBE I'll consider a winter theme! Even if we get six feet of snow in the next two weeks, there will be NO SNOW in my themes until AT LEAST November! 8O

Is this really only OCTOBER? lol

I was outside for over 4 hours before getting a 5 mintue warm up break. brrrr

The weather said with the wind chill it was only 23 degrees and I felt every bit of it but people still showed up and bought all day.

I sold alot but still have a few big goodies left such as an ice shanty, two boats, and a great go cart. Will have to visit the classified section here and add them in if they don't go over the weekend.

Hopefully it will be even more busy tomorrow.
