Katrina

Folks I have officially become a volunteer for the RED CROSS. Although I won't be able to head south to help with this catastrophe I will be aiding to the 400 some refugees which will be arriving to Oshkosh through my local RED CROSS chapter in the near future. I hope many more of you in the bubbler will also consider becoming officiated with a similar organization.

AJE - That's a good suggestion, one that everyone should follow.

Are there really that many people coming this far north, though? From what I'd heard this morning on npr, very few people want to go that far from their old homes, that the "thousands" we'd been told to expect up here just aren't coming.

I found a few more things this morning. There are a few places that are accepting donations of goods in areas where the survivors are massed, including http://www.dioms.org/ The Diocese of Mississippi and the Houston area Saint Vincent de Paul stores http://www.svdphouston.org/hurricane...na_victims.htm. They stress, though, that you should only send the things they're asking for, because they're already overwhelmed with donations that need to be sorted and processed. I think I'm going to send to both of these places, in addition to the group Lori Miller was talking about elseforum.

A different tack: http://www.hireability.com/ is offering free job listings to people wanting to hire those affected by Katrina and free resume posting for the affected.

I belong to a local sewing group, and we are looking for a place to donate blanket/quilts to help those in the Gulf Coast. Does anyone know where we can take them? The Salvation Army and the Red Cross are only interested in monetary donations. Other than that we have been unable to find a place willing to take them Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Quilts

I read in the paper today that Auxillery Clubs will be taking supplies south. By me I know Berlin and Ripon clubs will be leaving soon. I would check out those places.

Humane Society of the United States

8,500 animals rescued in Mississippi and New Orleans. In September, shortly after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, The HSUS launched its largest disaster relief operation ever. Working with local authorities and other national groups, we opened emergency animal shelters and sent dozens of animal rescue teams into devastated areas, literally breaking down doors to reach stranded pets. All told, we helped rescue and reunite thousands of pets with their owners, a task we are still working on today.

Thanks to you, The Humane Society of the United States could stand and fight for animals in these circumstances. And thanks to you, we are making a difference every day in the lives of animals.
