As you know, I am new to this community. I got kicked over here fm another WI genealogy site. I actually do have ties to Wisconsin...I was born here! However I haven't shown my face in WI since I was 2 years old. I grew up on a dairy farm in Arkansas, went to 4 years of college, then joined the Navy. After 20 years, I came back to Arkansas thinking it would still be a cheap place to live. NOT! Now I am looking for another place to call home. So tell me, what makes Wisconsin a great place to live? I lived and working in MN for several years so winter isn't an issue for me. Are the people in WI nice? MN has something they call "Minnesota Nice". I never did figure that one out but I think it might have had something to do with driving :?:
One of the things I like about Wisconsin is that it's so green compared to so many other states. I've been to (and lived in) all 48 of the contiguous states and I have to say that Wisconsin is certainly one of the greener ones.
What is "Minnesota Nice"?
Midwestern hospitality is at its best here where the dual nature of our Twin City area combines an exciting and vital urban setting with the friendly and relaxing comfort reminiscent of a small town. Our "twins" are fraternal rather than identical. Minneapolis is bustling and sophisticated with modern skyscrapers, galleries and art museums in trendy neighborhoods, and stylish eateries. St. Paul, our capitol city, is more traditional, showing a healthy respect for its historic neighborhoods and buildings, many of which have been lovingly kept and restored.
Good mix of economy. Strong business climate; lack of bad debt (best in the country).
Four seasons (if you like that!)
Clean state, green state.
Good people, strong work ethic and strong community values; not terribly transient...roots.
Strong urban, urbane and rural mixes.
Our lakes! (We have 15,000, more than the Land of 10,000 Lakes!)
For me - it's home.
Used to be able to say more: exemplary government. Still, a fairly progressive state. We do our share and then some for the republic.
Good question. Thanks for posting it.
Regards,
Keith

Hey! Hey! I love cheap beer! MY granddad on my mother's side was a brewmaster, worked at the old Fox Head brewry in Waukesha.
Actually, I'm not trying to pick on Wisconsin. I am asking the same question of all the states I am considering a move to. As you can tell, I do have ties to your state but I just can't remember anything about WI or the old family farm. My dad used to tell me he moved south because of the winters and high property taxes in your fair state. Arkansas may have been a cheap place to live back in my childhood, but it sure ain't cheap now!
Let's see, I was born and raised in Chicagoland........moved to WI in 1996 to help keep my son out of gangs..... moved to St. Paul in 99, married in 2000 and back to WI in 2003. Plus as a child we used to visit Prairie du Chien on a regular basis as Gramma and Gramps moved there from Cicero (sub of Chicago) in 1968 when I was little.
For ME, I love the peace. The green. The soil. Flowers. I love the helpfulness of many of the folks. Yes, Midwestern Hospitaltity.....very well said.
I must disagree about the economy in THIS particular area though. It's TERRIBLE. Maybe it's because we have one tech school (WWTC) and two colleges (Viterbo & UW/LaCrosse). I know the college folks have to make a living too....but I believe it drives the economy down. I battle w/in about this (LOL).
I'm glad I moved out of the rat race of Chicago and into the Cheese Zone of WI! THAT'S IT........ IT'S THE CHEESE!!!
I was born and raised in MN but moved to WI 6 yrs ago....because of a job my husband got. It was hard at first leaving my friends etc but I find WI (and especially the community we live in) to be just as friendly and there is alot to do here. Of course I still root for my vikings but that's only right. ha ha
I grew up here, and actually am currently, and I don't know how life could be better. There are many fine schools, educational learning oppertunities in downtown milwaukee, so on and so forth.
Of all the planes at this year's EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, there's one that has a lot of general aviation pilots eyeing it as their possible next purchase. It's a plane that had its birth just seven years here in Wisconsin.
If you talk to the animals they will talk to you, If you do not talk to them you will not know them. And what you do not know you will fear. What one fears, one destroys. ~Chief Dan George. (1899 - 1981)
Goofy, that's a good question. I grew up in the state, but have spent most of my adult life out of state.
What do I think of often, and miss very much? DUH! Wisconsin!
It grows on ya, eh? It's in the blood, the genes, and the psyche.
I really miss old Green Grove Road in Appleton ~

Kringles are oval, butter-layered Danish pastries that were first introduce to Racine in the late 1800s by immigrant Danish bakers. they were originally pretzel-shaped, almond-filled coffee cakes called Wienerbroth (Viennese bread). over the years, a variety of fruit and nut fillings were added, and the pretzel shape was changed to its present oval shape to eliminate the unfilled, overlapping parts...

O&H Bakery! Of course. What was I thinking. lol They are really the best to get kringles from and they ship anywhere if I'm not mistaken.
They have a cake called banana split torte. It's to die for! Really it has to be the best cake from a bakery I have ever had. If you ever get back here stop in. They have two locations in Racine, one near Regency Mall and the other on the North side.
