Is bubbler funner?

A funny little anecdote:

Recently, my office-mate realized that a good way to get on my nerves was to use, or rather misuse, language ("He ain't..." or "So I says to him" for example). Now, don't get me wrong, I'm far from perfect, and i have been known to mix metaphors now and again, but there are a few "words" that just get under my skin. "Funner" is one of them.

Following perhaps one too many corrections ("Dude, 'funner' is not a word!"), we got into a long discussion about the dynamic nature of the english language and vernacular usage. This lead to him telling me that "bubbler" was not a word, and is only used in WI (note: He is from MN). He even went so far as to propose a wager: If "bubbler" is a word, and "funner" is not, he will stop harassing me with his constant use of "funner."

So, we turned to www.dictionary.com and found:
funner - not a word
bubbler - a public fountain to provide a jet of drinking water

Still not satisfied with the answer, we turned to the OED. After setting up a free trial subscription::
funner - Still not a word
bubbler - a public fountain to provide a jet of drinking water

So, no more "funner" for him!

... Ok, maybe it's not that funny, but at least you have a response when people next bug you about the word "bubbler."

People that blatantly misuse the English language really get on my nerves as well. Thanks for fighting the good fight.

Re: Is bubbler funner?

When looking for yet another older post I came across this one. Thought it was pretty great to see how people will fight to the end for the word....bubbler. For whatever reason... the word bubbler just brings on a reaction in members. lol

Makes me know why the 'bubbler.com' is a #1 site. With great members and a great word attached how can we go wrong?

Re: Is bubbler funner?

i thinks that guy has to come up with a funnyer word than that. It ain't really all that funny. how about bubblier? or bubblicious? or bubbletastic? oh boy, i always have a good time messing with the english teacher types, dontchaknow? lol
the real question is when does a non word become a recognized word? i thinks it is most likely after it gets used enough, dare. soooooo everyone repeat after me 10 times. "thats funnyer"
see now its a real word. lol

funnyer: to achieve a level of more fun then the previous version of a joke or amusing story.
ex. the jokes kieth tells are fun, but rudedog is funnyer. lol

Re: Is bubbler funner?

Just reminded me of when I REALLY ticked off an English professor in college,,, when asked why my grammar and spelling wasn't the best,, I replied "I ain't no English major, I is a Chemistry major" Still got an A in the class though,,,,, guess my comedy wasn't being graded. My grammar and spelling have improved, the "bad" grammar was on a rough draft,,,,, didn't think I had to be perfect on it.
