Stranded Wisconsin ice fisherman says lucky to be alive


An ice fisherman from northern Wisconsin who was stranded on Lake Superior clinging to a piece of ice the size of an ambulance said on Friday he feels lucky to be alive.

I went ice fishing with my family once when I was young. The sound of the ice creaking and cracking scared the bejeezes out of me! I never went again. I like fishing but not when it's cold or frozen like that!

I love to fish but have never been tempted to ice fish .... I don't mind snow and cold.. ice is another story.

You could not pay me enough to go ice fishing. I would be terrified the whole time out there.

Just the other day we saw a man and a small child walking on the ice and getting ready to fish in the marina. Keeping in mind it has been warmer lately I could not believe someone would chance going out there let alone bring a child out there! Makes you wonder where some people's minds are.

I've ice fished once in my life. We drove the van on the ice and drilled our holes and waited...and waited...and waited...until we caught one fish the whole day. That was with 4 people.

PK, haven't you ever ice skated or walked on ice? I remember as a kid going ice skating on the river a lot, at the rinks in town here. I also remember walking or skating down the river. I never remember hearing ice cracking. I felt completely safe. You just have to have common sense about how long it's been below freezing to have a deep enough freeze. You have to figure if the public ice rinks aren't open, then the rest of the ice isn't safe. Just common sense.

You often see ice shanties on the lakes. Then there are those that leave the shanties out there or drive a vehicle on the ice in late winter and oops!

Ice fishing doesn't interest me. I'd rather fish in summer in a boat.

PK, haven't you ever ice skated or walked on ice?

Well actually I use to skate all the time at our lagoon in Zion when I was a kid but never thought about the ice not being safe. It was always with the park district watching over it so guess we counted on them to let us know if it was OK or not. Otherwise we would skate in our field that use to get frozen water in it but it was never very deep.

Guess a large lake just seems alot more dangerous, especially in the story here. Or as an adult I just worry about safety alot more than when I was a kid. lol
