Did you see or hear the meteorite around 10:07 p.m. tonight? I saw a couple of flashes out the window and thought it was strange that it was lightning when the sky was filled with stars. Then about 4 minutes later, we heard what we thought was thunder and it shook our house and lasted a long time! People are calling the tv stations from all around the area saying they saw it. Some are even saying pieces landed near them. Someone posted on another site that they heard that a huge meteor is supposed to pass 16,000 miles from the earth tomorrow evening around 6 p.m.
They reported on the radio this morning that two fires started from it in the Blue River area which is between Muscoda and Boscobel. So I wonder if that means some pieces of it actually hit the ground?
Small pieces of the meteorite found near Madison. Scientists at UW-Madison are urging people that find fragments of the meteor to bring them in for analysis.
It is estimated that the meteor was 3 feet wide before it broke apart. This is rare for one to be this big by the time it reaches earth. Most are the size of a peanut.
From Space.com: "NASA scientists have released some of their findings about the meteor and said that the initial explosion of the meteor would have released as much energy as 20 tons of TNT."

As said in the video I posted, I should have said most pieces of a meteorite are the size of a grain of sand or a pea. The peanut size came from the fragment found near Madison by a farmer. I got my stories mixed up.
