Wisconsin's Own Munchkin - Dead at 94"

"Meinhardt Raabe, a Watertown native who played the Munchkin coroner in The Wizard of Oz, died Friday, April 9th. He was 94.

Raabe was raised on a farm near Watertown and graduated from UW-Madison in 1937. Shortly thereafter, he left Wisconsin to audition for The Wizard of Oz.

Raabe was one of the few surviving Munchkins from the 1939 film. He played the role of the coroner who pronounces the Wicked Witch of the East "really most sincerely dead."

Re: Wisconsin's Own Munchkin - Dead at 94"

I was going to post this, but I forgot. I heard about this the other day.

My grandma often talked about the munchkin from Watertown. For some reason I was thinking it was a woman. I guess munchkins can be male or female.

Re: Wisconsin's Own Munchkin - Dead at 94"

He might be related to a couple of old friends of ours with the last name Raabe. I'm not sure. I never seem them anymore so I can't ask.

Ok, now I think I know why I thought the munchkin was a woman. He came to visit his sister in Watertown. That explains it. My grandma used to live at Highland House, which is where his sister lives these days.

Here's the story from the Watertown Daily Times. They had a half page story on the front page on Monday.

Re: Wisconsin's Own Munchkin - Dead at 94"

I remember every year when I was a child Wizard of Oz would play on T.V. I never wanted to miss that special each year and we use to all gather around and watch it to the very end. Loved that movie.

Re: Wisconsin's Own Munchkin - Dead at 94"

I always seem to remember it was on when we had company over at the house. Must have always landed around someone's birthday. We'd watch it for a little bit, but you know how kids can't sit still when all the cousins are over.

I'm not even sure if I ever saw the whole thing at once.

I do remember seeing The Wiz. Does that count?

Re: Wisconsin's Own Munchkin - Dead at 94"

If you ever wondered who played in the Wizard of Oz movie (including the names of all the Munchkins), this is a great place to check out all the names of everyone involved with the movie. Quite interesting how many people actually had a part.
