Governor Jim Doyle signed a law this week requiring Wisconsin school children to attend and complete kindergarten before being admitted to first grade in the state’s public schools. The law includes children enrolled in charter schools.
The law will take effect beginning in the 2011-2012 school year. Prior to this, Wisconsin law required that children begin school at age six; kindergarten was optional, and thus attendance was unenforceable.
