Im thinking about taking a road trip next month to see the fall colors in Wisconsin, to me Wisconsin has the most beauiful fall colors anywhere!! Does anyone have any input where the best places to go on a fall color road trip? Would love any ideas!!
I'd say anywhere along the Mississippi River. La Crosse is beautiful and so is Prairie du Chien area.
I haven't been there yet, but am planning on it this year and that's Wisconsin Rapids and Warrens area to drive the Cranberry highway which is 50 miles. I've never seen the cranberry harvest going on.
In October we are going with a group of people to Devil's Lake and around that area. I would say Governor Dodge State Park is another area that would be nice in fall.
Timing is everything if you want to capture the color of fall in Wisconsin.
My timing has been off for years but maybe this fall I will catch it .

....Now, a very great man once said
That some people rob you with a fountain pen
It didn’t take too long to find out
Just what he was talkin’ about
A lot of people don’t have much food on their table
But they got a lot of forks ’n’ knives
And they gotta cut somethin’....

A boat trip in the Dells is probably a nice way to get to see the colors. I've never done it in the fall.
They do offer boat trips on the Mississippi, so that could be another option.
What a great ideas Blue.
One thing I like to do is find the rustic roads and drive down them. There is a beautiful road not far from Lake Geneva that is covered with bright colored leaves on both sides in the fall.
Wisconsin has rustic roads all over and they they have signs showing the way. I think somewhere I posted a website that shows the rustic roads. I'll have to look and see if I can find it and post it again.
I think sometimes it just means getting off the beaten path and taking those country roads instead of always the same highways. This could be any time of year.
I have a Wisconsin Atlas & Gazetteer that shows all those roads and other little things that most big maps don't show. It's great for finding those out of the way places and hidden treasures. You can get these atlases for other states as well.
Awesome Ideas and thanks for the info on the rustic roads maps didnt even know Wisconsin had one!! gonna check it out tho ...thanks guys and I agree the timing has to be right, mines been off a bit to but no matter the fall colors in Wisconsin cant be beat no matter when you go!!!
All great ideas everyone! I wish I had the time to do all those things. Especially the Prarie Du Chien area. I've allways loved Wyalusing state park. It has awesome views of the Wisconsin and the Mississippi rivers from 400 ft bluffs! One can see turkey vultures and even bald eagles soaring by at "eye level" so cool!
This year biking is my thing, or rather tandem biking is our thing, my boyfriend and I. So we are getting out to see the colors on a daily basis from the bike. I think biking is the best way to see the world. One is not "trapped" behind the bubble effect of a car's glass and metal. One feels more aprt of the worls than when in a car behind glass, whizzing around so fast.
Soon I will get some of my many picture off my digital camera and post them on here to share with all of you
Yes, Wisconsin's "Rustic Roads" are awesome! I'm not sure of everywhere they're located (I think they're throughout the entire state), but talk about beauty! My goodness, yes.
