Check Your Receipt: Some Wisconsin Businesses Fined For Overcharging

According to an article on channel3000.com:

Consumer complaints prompted a three-month investigation by the state – consumer protection workers checked stores around the state and ultimately fined four chain stores, including two that had violations at Madison stores.


The Madison East Barnes & Noble and Dick's Sporting Goods, on Madison’s west side, both had price accuracy rates below 98 percent, which is the state standard. Inspectors not only found overchargings at the stores,
but they weren't corrected by the time inspectors returned a second time.


Both companies were fined for violations at locations across the state. At Barnes & Noble, the fines totalled more than $9,000 and at Dick’s the fines topped more than $23,000.

I always check my receipts, plus try to keep a watchful eye as the items ring up.. I've found one of my local supermarkets continually overcharging for items supposedly on sale.

Same thing happens to me from time to time at the Walmart we have here. See something on sale, buy it, get home and check the receipt and it shows full price.

This happens mostly at the meat counter at our local super market.. when I point it out they always say the scale must have been set wrong and invariably they just put it back out unless you call it to the attention of a manager.

Years ago when we lived in Zion, Illinois it was common knowledge to always watch the local Walgreen's, since it was always over charging for items. Many times I would catch them ringing something up for more than what the price was on the product.

Then after quite sometime of this I remember reading something in the newspaper that Walgreen's was being watched and I guess more than just our store was on the 'list'.

I have no idea if any of the stores are still having problems with this but I never notice the Walgreen's we go to here in Kenosha ever having problems with prices.

I remember when our K-Mart and Walmart stores would give back 3.00 off the price of any item that rings up incorrectly. If the item was less than the 3.00 then you got the item free.

One time I went to Walmart and bought 5 things that was marked way down to clear them out and they all rang up wrong, by the time they took the additional 3.00 off it was like getting the items 70 percent off.

I have no idea if they still give the 3.00 bucks, I will have to check that out.

Not the one around here. I was overcharged, went back with my receipt and only received the amount I was overcharged back.
