UW Study: Poverty Rates On Rise In Wisconsin
Milwaukee County One Of Three Poorest Areas
The deepening recession is forcing more Wisconsin residents to rely on food assistance programs, according to a new study on poverty from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Researchers said the number of people in Wisconsin receiving food stamps has increased by 37 percent since 2007. The study also found that poverty rates have grown by 1.8 percent in the past two years.
The three areas with the highest poverty rates are Milwaukee County, Rock County and a 10-county region in northwestern Wisconsin around Lake Superior.
Waukesha County has the state's lowest poverty rate at 3.7 percent.
