I was thinking that Garage Sales could be a fun topic. Not to post your upcoming Garage Sale (we have the announcement section or free classifieds for that) but for everyone to post their 'finds' or tell us about your adventures.
Tell us about your area sales and what bargain you brought home, or what is the best thing you found in a garage sale in the past?
Any newbies to the world of Garage Sales? Putting one on for the first time? Need tips? Questions? Anyone with advice?
Tell us about the worst thing you saw in a sale? Funniest?
Tips on how to write up an ad? What catches your eye and makes you want to attend?
The Sales are just beginning for the year I'm sure there are many of us that can't wait to hit the road to check them out!
Just a thought...this isn't limited to just Garage Sales. Flea Markets, Antique Sales, Auctions, Estate Sales. Tell us what your 'find' for the day is.
Besides putting on a bunch of Garage Sales not just for me but for family/friends we also had a time when we did Estate Sales for people.
When we first started we thought this sounded like a ton of fun. lol lol Quickly did we find out differently. One sale that convinced me that working with people isn't always fun....I had to price and set up a sale for a woman that was downsizing and moving to a mobile home. She had a ton of 'stuff' nothing worth much but still a house full. Problem? She thought her things were made out of gold and thought the prices should reflect so. I will never forget the conversation we had when I was trying to convince her that her many old dusty skeins of yarn that she had in broken boxes were not worth the prices she wanted me to put on. lol
Great idea pk. I'm sure I'll be posting here
I have a yard sale strategies website I'm working on, still have a few things to add then it's open for business.
I was planning on going to that one garage sale this morning, decided on skipping it. It's more or less a farm equipment auction anyway.
This is a cool site to check out. Maybe find a big estate sale, flea market or church rummage sale near you, I have noted a few i will check out on the list of rummages. You could also place an ad if you have one of your own. In addition to placing your ad here at theBubbler of course...
I love the kind of sales when the prices are low. I hate it when a person puts prices on as if they think they are running a retail store instead of a garage sale.
Two sales that comes to mind... I found a whole rack of clothes that must have been from two different people. Everything fit either me or my younger daughter. The lady told me everything was .50 each. I walked out with bags full and spent around 9.00. Everything was very nice and most of it fit.
Another sale: They were selling the clothes by the bag full since it was the last afternoon of the sale. Brand name jeans they had only 3.00 on, nice tops, sweaters, anything that would fit in the bag was 5.00. They didn't think about someone like me that knew how to roll and squeeze. lol I filled the bags sooo full that I actually felt guilty. lol I bought 2 bags worth and still have a few jeans that I wear from that sale.
I stopped at a sale one time and decided to check under the table. (always look under). There was a small box full of something that said 5.00 bucks for all. I took it out and started looking at it and it was glass negatives from way back. You could see the images of women in long dresses etc.
I have no idea still as to the value or what to do with them but I'm sure they are worth more than the 5.00 I spent on them.
We stopped at a sale once and I found a really old cookie jar that had an animal face on each side of the head. Later we found the same one in an antique store for several hundred dollars. I think I paid something like 3.00 or 5.00 for it.
I always look under tables too. One time I spotted some boxes, opened them and found lots of cool computer parts. They said if you want them take both boxes, for free There were people around looking at me like, hey I want some of that lol.
I love it when you find something and people actually offer you more on the spot. One time we bought a very large older safe. We didn't pay much for it and this guy wanted it so bad that he offered more and followed us out and gave his phone number in case we decided to sell it.
Last year I bought three old bowling balls for a couple of bucks. I gave them to my neighbor for his yard. He paints them different colors and puts them on stakes or stands. They make great gazing balls and they don't break!
I went to an estate sale a few years back. I was looking around the sale, and found some of my clothes, a few model cars I built as a youngster, and a really well seasoned cast iron fry pan. I don't know, and neither did the vendor know how my belongings got there.

so...what happen? Did you buy them back? Did they give them to you? Or did you just walk away? Just curious.

Interesting..but what type of paint did he use to make them look like a glzing ball?

I don't know...I guess I will have to ask him that now that you got me curious too. LOL
I saw some in an art/craft shop in Boscobel a couple weeks ago that the woman had taken broken colored glass and glued it onto old bowling balls after they were painted. They were really pretty but I don't know that I'd pay $100 for one like she was charging. There were also a couple smaller ones that had rhinestones glued on them. I think those might appeal more to the redneck crowd though. LOL

That would be kind of freaky to say the least!
Maybe your Mum had a sale years ago and the person who's estate they were selling bought them back then?

The clothes were old and outdated, the model cars were cool, but I just wasn't interested in having them, but the cast iron pan came along home with me. A chef can always recognize their cast iron when they see it. The sale holder said they had no idea how the items ended up there.
We once bought some old books at a sale that had belonged to my mother's first cousin.. and I boughy a book at another sale once that had a picture of some sailors stuck between the pages and my dad was right in the middle of them.

I remember going to a garage sale with my Mom way back when I was in Jr. High, not telling when THAT was,,, and a lady had left her husband in charge,, and he sold all her Aigner shoes and purses for 50 cents and a buck each! Guess what,, the shoes fit! We bought several pairs of pumps, flats and sandles, and about 3 purses!. i would have loved to have seen her face when she got back. We asked him are you sure, and he said yes, shoes are 50 cents and purses are a buck
At our last sale this past Fall I sold a late 1800's wicker rocking chair. The lady tried to get me to come down a little on the price with the excuse that she wasn't totally sure if it was going to fit where she wanted and she really didn't need it but...she just had to have it. I didn't come down since I had a good price on it to start with. I didn't want it to sell but I needed the room. I also had someone else in mind that wanted the chair.
Anyways, she bought it and oh she was going to take such good care of it she said. No one would sit in it blah, blah. lol
A few weeks later we stopped at a new antique store that opened up west of Kenosha and I came around the corner and there sat my chair! lol She had a higher price on it but not a whole lot more. I was going to go back again to see if she sold it but actually I forgot all about it until now. lol
I've seen other things of mine in sales before to. Clothes, books and a few toys that I know use to be one of my kids that we sold in sales.
Well we had a few garage sales this weekend. I picked up about 10 items. Nothing really special but I did get a camera for $2.00 and it works, check out the Amazon link below $157.99 for this camera new. Also got a Robo Kitty for 50¢. Check out the pics below.
