Top 10 consumer complaints in Wisconsin in 2008

Landlord tenant issues ranked second with 1,646 complaints. Security deposit issues and impermissible lease provisions made up the largest portion of those complaints, according to the agency.

Telecommunications (telephone companies) were third with 1,328 complaints. Always a big area for complaints, this industry has ranked first, second or third on the Top 10 list since 1995.

Home improvement came in fourth with 1,163 complaints. Consumer protection officials urge consumers to only agree to home improvement projects that are put in writing.
5. People love their cable. And
for the first time ever, satellite dishes made the list at number five with 979 complaints. Billing issues and misrepresentations about cost were the major problems reported.

Internet service providers were the sixth largest gripe with 570 complaints. Also a first to the Top 10 list, Internet service provides raked in most of their complaints because of billing issues and misrepresentation.

Credit cards ranked seventh. Consumer protection urged people to read the fine print on their cards to determine when and how interest rates, the billing period or other provisions could be changed.

Gasoline/fuel non-heating made the Top 10 list for the first time ever. High gas prices and differences between the price on the street sign and the price at the pump were consumers’ biggest concerns.

Motor vehicle repair ranked ninth with 517 complaints.

Travel/tourism rounded out the list with 509 complaints. The agency said that many consumers who complained said that they paid for all or part of a trip, only to have the trip cancelled or have the company go belly up.
