I went to Holy Hill years ago to climb up the tower. That is scary looking down and parts of it were open. I think they changed that. I guess you don't want people jumping or falling.
I don't know that I've been to any exciting looking churches in Wis. Most were ordinary. I have to think about some of the weddings I've been to if there are any that stand out.
I heard about this one in St. Louis is supposed to be quite beautiful. It has one of the largest mosiac collections in the world.
What is the prettiest church you all have ever visited in Wisconsin?
Easily; St Peters Episcopal Church, North Lake Wisconsin, It reminds me of churches in Ireland or England, with the cemetary right on the church grounds,
and the building is just breath taking.
What is the prettiest church you all have ever visited in Wisconsin?
The Stavkirke Church on Washington Island may not be the "prettiest" church but it was certainly the most interesting one I've ever been in. The most impressive would have to be Trinity Church in New York City where George Washington attended services. But, the most "prettiest" church is the Methodist church where I was baptized at in the little town of Gotham. Sadly, it closed and is now a house.
I just noticed that this forum topic was actually started with the subject:
Wisconsin: Where Is Your Place Of Worship?
And I think it's moving more towards, the prettiest Church, lol
Anyways, just wanted to say that I attended different forms of Church Services through out my life. I feel close to God whenever I'm in a Church doesn't matter if it happens to be the one I've been attending or just visiting, or happen to be touring just to see it. Any Church has a special affect on me. But I also have to say that I feel close when I'm not at Church also. Just take a walk through the woods sometime, especially in the fall or early morning when the birds are singing, or sit and quietly watch the waves at the Lake, a Beautiful sunrise, or sunset, walking through a flower garden. God is everywhere. So even though you may attend a certain Church, you can also be 'attending' just by taking the time to see the miracles and beauty that surrounds us all. Sometimes I get more out of 'attending' this way because I feel like I am more on a one to one level with God then, if that makes sense.
That is a pretty church. The one I go to has the stained glass windows, but the rest is kind of plain. I think years ago, before they built this one, it was fancier in the inside. That was before I was born, but I have seen pictures.
Anyone have anything to current to add to this thread? Started out well then just kind of petered out!
Which brings me to:
Before these name origins peter out, we'll do one more. To "peter out"—to taper off or come to an end—has a couple of possible origins. Religion, that bottomless fount of fun terms, offers that "peter" refers to the apostle Peter, who first rushed to Christ's defence in the Garden of Gethsemane, but later disclaimed any knowledge of the fellow when the chips were down. His support "petered out". Another explanation comes from American miners during the 1849 gold rush. The gunpowder mixture of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal, commonly called "peter" by miners, was used as an explosive in mining, and when no amount of exploding turned up any more gold, the mine was "petered out".
