Question Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

How do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Wisconsin? Do you usually do anything special to celebrate? Catch a parade? Go to a festival?

How about a night out this year at a great Irish pub or a cozy stay at an authentically styled Irish inn?

Do you prepare a special meal of corned beef and cabbage? How about some green beer or a traditional Irish brew?

Re: Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

We will be spending part of St. Patrick's Day trying to save a"bit o' the green" by taking advantage of the low interest rates...we are refinancing our mortgage. LOL Then we may stop at one of the local eateries for an Irish dinner to celebrate.

Re: Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

I have several big corn beef eaters around here and they love the left overs too. So I bought 4 corn beefs to make with cabbage, baby carrots, boiled potatoes and Irish soda bread. We will be having them tomorrow so we can all be around to eat it. Left overs on St Patrick's day.

We always like to have Green River Pop every year too. The kids love it because it's green (and tastes good) lol But for some reason I have yet to find any in the stores.

Always, hope everyone has a great St.Patrick's Day.

Re: Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

MMMM,Corned beef and cabbage, irish soda bread, it's my favorite time of the year!
Although I have this meal often I never get tired of it. I can hear my grandfather speaking to me in his strong Irish brogue, tellin me what were probably big whoppers about the Old Sod, although I am married to a Slovak, she did learn to prepare this meal well. PK you missed a good one last night, she made Lekvartasky(probably spelled wrong)
It's a sweet dough, kind of like a perogy, with jam inside served with Walnuts & butter and powdered sugar on top.(bring on the meatless Fridays!)

Re: Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

I bought a couple point cut corned beef briskets the other day. Best part is a day or so after St. Patty's, my supermarket always shoots out the left-over briskets at a discount!

I'm Welsh-Irish-Scottish-English by heritage.. my in-laws own an Irish pub in NYC..

My Grandfather was from Baltimore Ireland, it is at almost the southern most tip, I just thought about a funny Irish/bird story for you. When my younger son was getting married my daghter-in-law wanted white doves for the wedding, we shopped around and the prices were nuts, so I told my wife I can raise those white homing pigeons for that(Bull hockey; you cannot) anyway, I got about forty birds together, we lived in Chicago at the time so the day before the wedding we started up here with 40 pigeons in the back of my Tahoe, we were having a Irish Piper perform right after the ceremony so on the trip up we were listening to Irish CD's, when we played those the birds were quite, anything else on the radio they started to fight. So for 4 hours we listened to Irish Pipe music, not bad for me, but the wife was a little cranky. After the ceremony the piper started a little prematurly, just as the birds were released, they wouldn't leave; when shood away they landed up in the tree's (just above all the treats for the wedding party, outdoor ceremony) there are probably as many pictures of those birds sitting up there, as there are of the bride & groom. After the Piper finished they immediately took off and headed for home. So never train your bird to specific music.

Re: Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

Great story!

My experience with pet birds is they want the things done the same way every day.. my bird wants to go to bed at the same time every night and when 10 o'clock rolls around, he lets me know it's time for him to go to bed. In the morning, I open his cage door and put his extra treats out. If I don't also open the window shades as I normally do, he'll stay in his cage until I do! If we've had some warm days with the windows open, he'll fly in circles over my head and keep looking at the window until I open it! If he ever had to live with someone else, he wouldn't know what to do!

I raised parrots for about ten years, each had it's own quirk, I saved all my additional change to buy an African Grey, after I brought it home and put it in my bedroom after two weeks it decided it didn't like me. So it would scream unless his cage was covered, my wife could go there all the time and he would nuzzle with her(Traitor Bird)> I got even though, I bought a Cockatoo that hated her.

Not exactly a celebration, however i picked up 2 dozen green glazed St. Patrick's Day donuts on the way to work, for everyone in my office

That's as close to celebrating as i'll get, i'm sure.

Happy St Patty's Day All!
I trust it's a beautiful day where ever you are.

Two Irishmen are walking down the road, (Pat & Mick)
A head rolls next to them, Mick picks it up and asks Pat,
Pat my boy, doesn't this look like Shawn?
Pat takes a look & say's, don't think so Mate,
Oi remember Shawn being much taller!

Like the warmth of the sun
And the light of the day,
May the luck of the Irish
shine bright on your way.

Re: Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

Did you know that corned beef and cabbage isn't even Irish? It's an American dish.

I'm probably not doing anything for St. Paddy's. I had forgotten about it. Although there was a couple of yummy sounding Irish desserts at Glenda's in Okauchee being served. Sounded tempting. Besides, one of the owners has the same name as me which is cool. The restaurant name is the wife's name and her husband's combined, although people think it's just her name. Really nice folks and good food, too. They used to own a restaurant in Milwaukee.

As strange as it may be, i had never heard of corned beef and cabbage being the St. Patrick's day dish of choice... everyone at work was talking about having that tonight.

I don't like corned beef or cabbage... I made a casserole for dinner.

Re: Wisconsin: How Are You Celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

I don't like cabbage either. I don't think I've had corned beef. Isn't it just beef where the cattle were corn fed? In my mind I picture a slab of beef covered in corn meal LOL.

I did eat something Irish tonight. We picked up some bangers at the meat market. Similar to a brat, but not quite as tasty. We made those on the grill with some bockwurst, which are like skinny brats. The seasoning is a little different than brats. A package of them from the meat market is really cheap, too. They used to only make them at lent time, but now you can get them all year. I've only seen them at our meat market in town here. I'm sure they have them somewhere by Milwaukee with all the Germans.

I'm being talked into going out for a green beer. I dunno, maybe one, but I barfed on it once. I'll stick to yellow beer. Maybe I'll have an Irish car bomb. That's the only way I can handle drinking Guinness. It's Irish cream and Irish whiskey dropped in some Guinness like your other bomb type of shots. The sweetness of the Irish Cream helps make the beer less bitter. Guinness is too bitter for me.

Yes, I remember reading this before. But then I'm not Irish and we love corn beef just not to often so we make it on this holiday. lol Sounds good to me.

Anyways, check out the following website not only to set the record straight about corn beef..but also for a cute poem about it too.
