I feel that while taking on line classes might be good for some students, it may not suite others. When my youngest son was a senior his high school ran out of Math classes for him to take. He had started high school Math in 7th grade so had gone through all of the high school courses they offered. The school had just started trying on line courses the previous year with one other student and it didn't go well. This was a tiny country school (graduating class size of about 28-30 students) with a very inadequate computer system and no full time computer technician on staff to manage it so the system was down more than it was working. So when they wanted to have my son take a college level Math course on line, I put my foot down and insisted they allow him to do the Youth Options instead. We have a two year campus in a nearby town so it would be feasible for him to go there to take the Advanced Calculus & Analytical Geometry class. The principal was very stubborn and kept trying to push the on line course but I had the guidance counselor backing me and we finally got the Youth Options class approved. I felt that my son wouldn't get the one on one learning experience he needed if he took the course on line plus I wasn't happy about the lack of a computer technician to make sure the system worked as required for such an advanced course. It turned out to be a good move as he not only got to find out what the local college was like, but he also received 10 credits towards his college degree while he was still in high school. It also helped him make his mind up as to whether he wanted to attend a two year or a four year college after graduation...he chose a four year college and is majoring in computer technology now.
