February 5-6, 2008 Major Winter Storm

Southern Wisconsin

A major winter storm impacted south-central and southeast Wisconsin on February 5-6, 2008, with the hardest hitting part of the storm during the morning of the 6th. This was a long duration event coupled with strong gusty winds and some thunder. Blowing and drifting snow compounded the effects of the heavy snow. Total new snow accumulations in excess of 12 inches occurred in the area southeast of a line from Dubuque, Iowa to Madison to Beaver Dam to West Bend to Sheboygan. Up to 16 inches fell in the area from Monroe and Janesville to the Port Washington and Milwaukee area...with isolated 18 to 21 amounts reported.

Oh how I remember this storm. Our school district was the only one IN THE STATE that decided the kids should go to school! Of course my kids never miss school so we got them to the schools and on time.

Needless to say we had no idea that the snow would actually fall so fast and accumulate so much during the day while they were sitting in their classrooms. My oldest daughter and I stay outside most the duration of the day shoveling trying to keep the driveway open so we could get back out to pick them back up again.

Oh you better believe a bunch of phone calls were made that day from angry and upset parents to the Superintendent yelling about keeping the schools open! (and yes, I was one of them!)

Do I remember. I was stuck in my driveway for a few days!

I was on my way home from St. Louis on the evening of the 5th--had to stop somewhere near Madison. The roads were impassable and you couldn't see a blessed thing.

I don't really remember exactly because all it did was snow last year every few days. I do remember never seeing the grass from Nov. to March. Not once did it melt down between snowstorms.

When was that last year when the cars got backed up on the interstate for 12 hours. I thought that was around this time.


edit: yep, Feb. 6 was the date I came up with when I googled it. I bet this is something those people that were stranded will never forget.

I remember. Only time I got help ~ my bro-in-law stopped by to plow the drifts from that one.

Much better this year!

Supposed to be about 56 here on Wednesday!

Last years record amount of snow made me want to move to Florida! It was horrid. I fear what is yet to come this year, since we haven't had too much, in comparison.
