re: Wisconsin: How do you go about getting your taxes done?
Never hold more to get back, i cant afford to have them hold more through out the year.
I do my own for free, along with free e-file and the sites are secure & keep record of your past years. It's fast and easy, I always have them back within a week (fed) and 10 days (state), cost me nothing & saves me money.
Using H&R block is a no software download, right online using their site & tells me within 20 min if the IRS has accepted it, error free, keeps me up to date by email & i can check it on their site anytime day or night... I've used several others over the years, however i prefer H&R block now. For state i go to the WI revenue site & e-file my state taxes, also for free & fast/easy.

In December, I claimed 9 so that I would have some Christmas shopping money. But, we usually always claim 0. I don't even want to attempt to do our taxes, not that they're technical or anything, but I just don't want to mess anything up!!!!

I said the same thing, but once i did it i was shocked how easy it was & how the sites wont allow you to have mistakes! It shocks me that so many people will go to places like H&R and spend $50-$200 on getting them done when it could take them 30 min online & get them in 5-10 days doing them on your own.
re: Wisconsin: How do you go about getting your taxes done?
I do my own on paper forms and send in through the US Post office. One year I had a more complicated tax return and went to a CPA. He wanted to see past 3 years of taxes so I brought them with me. After he looked them over he told me that I did not need him as I was doing as good of a job as he could do. Last year I tried a free tax software and the interface was very NOT user friendly. If I would have filed that way I would be in jail now!!!
The program told me I would be getting a $ 6000.00 plus refund, yeah right in my dreams!!!
I always do my taxes with pencil first sit on them for a week and then recheck before submitting. Most of the time I find some initial error but that is why I do them twice.
Beside what more fun could a person have than to do their income tax return!!!
Maybe watching snow melt or grass turning green.
Tax returns totally do NOT ЯØÇЌ!!

It's not even the money that would bother me about having my taxes done.. it's the sitting there waiting for my turn and answering questions. Easier to do it myself.

Us "retired but still earning some income" folks have to send in an 'estimated' quarterly check for the 'estimated tax due in the next year based on the previous year's tax liability'.
I mail the ES-form along with the check on the VERY SAME DAY THAT IT IS DUE. BUT I make sure to have the mailing envelope hand stamped at the Post Office with a legible date and time. That way it is legally as if they (the Feds & State) had received it "on time" - we do the same with any taxes due that we owe on the 15 of April - hand canceled with a legible date.
And we do have our inc. taxes prepared by a local CPA whose specialty is agriculture and small business tax prep..

Yep. Business law says that your dropping it in the mail constitutes "constructive receipt" of the person you're sending mail to - and you're smart for having it show the date and time.

With retirement accounts the way they are, a lot of us will we "working retired". It's supposed to be better to plan taxes for payment at the end of the year, but it sure feels good to get a refund.
re: Wisconsin: How do you go about getting your taxes done?
I am taking the paperwork to our accountant tomorrow. She usually gets them done in a couple days, then we sign them and they send it in electronically. We don't get a refund back since we have our own business and pay in quarterly.

Yep...our accountant had ours done in less than a week. I wasn't too thrilled that they raised the price up to $220 when they had less paperwork to do than last year though.
I did my son's taxes on line for him. He got both of his refunds already and deposited it in his savings account so he can put it towards college next fall. Every little bit helps!
