Wisconsin has a rich Native American heritage. The name Wisconsin itself is an Algonquian Indian word meaning "gathering of waters". Many place names are recognizably Native American in origin, such as Milwaukee.
There are 11 federally recognized Indian tribes in Wisconsin today: the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Forest County Potawatomi, the Ho-Chunk Nation, the Lac Court Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Menominee Indian Tribe, the Oneida Tribe of Indians, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the St. Croix Chippewa Indians, the Sokaogan Mole Lake Community, and the Stockbridge Munsee Community.
Experience a Wisconsin powwow and learn about one aspect of Native American culture through the New Dawn of Tradition video program and this companion Web site. These Web resources and the 15-minute instructional television program are designed for fourth and fifth grade students by the Educational Communications Board.
A documentary about churches blessing pets and first nation traditional attitudes about the importance of animals. This film is an expression of love for animals, by filmmaker Bill Olson (W.D. Sherman Olson). Featuring many families and their pets, and interviws with Eric Nielsen, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) and Rolf Nestingen, Senior Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church (Eau Claire, Wisconsin), and Dr. Lawrence T. Martin, Director of American Indian Studies at UW Eau Claire. Filmed in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
This afternoon we had the privilege of watching the Waswagoning Native American dancers in St. Charles, Illinois at the Pottawatomie pavilion on the fox river as part of the celebration for Ēkwabet's 20th birthday. Ekwabet is a 15-foot tall bronze sculpture of a Pattawatomie Indian. The dancers put on a great event, although I was caught with run down batteries in my cameras. I will be much better prepared the next time. Waswagoning Dance Theatre group is from Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, and they travel the country teaching people about their Ojibwe heritage and culture. They built a mini village, an authentic recreation of a Native American summer village.

Hey, Dave, you got the Stockbridge Munsee tribe--good for you! Most people forget about them because they are so small. They are "the last of the Mohicans." I spent a lot of time at their reservation when I was a kid--there's a special place in my heart for them.
I'm a bug on languages so I lament the fact many of the Native American languages are not being passed on as these cultures become more and more integrated into the mainstream.
