Nationwide contest is the talk of the town in Wisconsin Rapids
WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -- The South Wood County Humane Society could win up to $27,000 for its shelter and that has shelter leaders and the community excited.
When the contest started a couple months ago, the executive director never expected to be near the top, but once news of the contest spread, so did the community support.
"Schools are voting, businesses, every time we go out it's the talk of this Wisconsin Rapids area, but it's been amazing how this has been taken to heart," says South Wood County Executive Director, Philip Hartley.
When the contest first started 10 weeks ago, The South Wood County Humane Society was in 300th place. A couple weeks later they were in 150th, then they got in the top 100 and they didn't stop there.
Hartley says, "Then we were near top 50, then top 25 and I thought wow this is as close as we're going get. This is nationwide, we're a great community, but we're a small community, but it has not stopped. We hit the top ten and in a week we jumped from number ten to number two, where we are right now."
Second place pays $10,000, but of course, everyone's hoping for first, which pays $25,000. They've already won a thousand dollars for winning a week of voting and they're well on their way to winning Wisconsin, which pays another thousand dollars.
"With this money we can actually do what we need to do for the animals and that's most important. Is getting them back in good health and getting them adopted into a good home," says Beth Peabody, Pet Care Coordinator at the South Wood Co. Humane Society.
Hartley says the money will go towards things like vet care, supplies and payroll; things they would have struggled to pay for before this money came along.
Hartley says, "This money is free money basically, it's people that don't have money to give. they're out clicking and doing it everyday and that money will come to us through that effort, just a few minutes everyday."
The group currently in first place is called Best Friends Animal Society, in a small town in Utah.
You have until Sunday at midnight to vote.

So come on. They are so close to maybe winning this. It may not be the rescue that is in your area, but why not help one that is our own state that could use us!
