Where to donate quilts....

I am a member of my church's "sewing circle". We make twin, full, and child sized quilts for those in need. Most of our quilts for the last few years have been going to The Women's Center in Waukesha. The last time we tried to take some there they told us that they were not in need of any at that time, and to check back later on.

Right now we are looking for other possible places that would be willing to accept quilts. This would be the perfect time of year for such donations. But right now we are unable to find places interested in taking them. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas. We need it to be somewhere local to the Sussex/Waukesha area since we would have to deliver them. Does anyone have any ideas? I am routinely turned away by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army since they prefer cash donations. Any ideas would be VERY welcome. There are so many stories of local families being fire victims and that sort of thing who would certainly need quilts and such, but we just have to way to find out who to contact. I am hoping my Bubbler friends can help me out.

Thanks so much!

Re: Where to donate quilts....

I know our local schools out here in Jefferson County take in things like quilts, jackets, clothing etc for the children who really really need it.

They are very careful not to embarrass anyone and do a quiet home delivery of items.

Our schools out here even go as far as "adopting" families for Christmas time and will gift shop for whole families so no one is left with out a gift under the tree.

Check the local schools and see if they would want to give them families in the community

If your local schools dont, Jefferson is next door to Waukesha...I'll give you their contact info!

Another thought...what about the kids at Childrens Hospital ~ especially those who never get visitors...???? A nice quilt will bring a smile.

Re: Where to donate quilts....

To bad you don't live close to Kenosha. I can think of several places you could ask. The Shalom Center is the first that comes to mind. It is our large food pantry as well as a place for those in need. From abuse victims to those that had their home burned etc. etc.

Another place would be our Urban Outreach. They have the 'clothes closet' where I always donate used clothing. They work hand and hand with the Shalom Center and give clothes and personal items to the needy. I am sure they also take blankets, pillows etc.

Another place that may be interested would be the Spanish Center.

If you find yourself still in need to fina a place, please contact one of these places. If they need them they may have an outlet to help get the blankets. I have no idea but you never know.
