Good morning! How are we on this fine snowy day? Has everyone dug themselves out? I am still waiting for someone (read mr. tamed) to clear our driveway. Good thing we don't open till 10:00.
Went to see Twilight with my oldest grandaughter yesterday. She loved it. It is definitely okay, but not something I would have gone to see for myself. I must admit to reading the series and loving it, even though it's so....adolescent. I have to admire an author who can write that many words and keep the reader interested in the story.
Some I did, most I didn't. Smart Kid did a ghost and grabbed what he could...but a lot was gone already. He used something called Knoppix (SP?) and was able to get in and see my hard drive.
I got my pics, but I lost all my videos I made...glad that they are on youtube.
Lost all my tags so I have to start that over. All I have it what I put here.
Lost all my cool programs from the freebee of the day site
Sorry to hear that Carol. I actually had that happen a couple of times. Not fun.
I did want to throw it out here to see if anyone else heard this...I was told that the 'smileys' that you can download can often bring virus's with them. I had a free offer of the smileys one time and went for it and the guy that worked on my computer at the time told me that is how people end up with a ton of problems and to never, ever go for the smileys and many other sites that offer free things like that.
I only mentioned this since I know you mentioned the free smileys that you found one time when listing your free tags, and things. That wasn't long ago that I read that and now you had a bunch of computer problems.
Could it be connected somehow? How dangerous is downloading the free smileys?
Just wondering.

Two stellar examples are Uncle Sam's Cereal--A Fine Laxative and Uncle Fred's Fine Sex Olives. I think you should not have a product name with Uncle in it. There's something wrong with that. I found the olives in a grocery store; the words FINE SEX are in big orange type.
I found those olives at a gas station on the way up north this past summer. I have a picture of them.

We also went to see a movie this weekend. We saw Australia. It was a good movie, but long.
We don't get to the movie theater much these days, it's just too expensive to do it that often.
We didn't get too much snow here in town. Maybe 2 inches at the most. I will be leaving for work early today, just in case it's worse that direction. I doubt it, but you never know. They don't know how to use a plow where I live. You can always tell as soon as you get outside of the city limits. Roads are always much better.

YUP that is what my kid says too....he wont let me have the free smilie thing.... I was grounded from those about 3 yrs ago because he got tired of fixing my computer and it was always smilie related. That's why I switched to home made tags. Tags are more fun then smilies anyways cuz they are made for you and have your name on them.
My daughter saw it and swears it is the best movie of all time!
I don't know if I'd go that far. I can think of a lot of other movies there were better. It was good, but not awesome. Worth seeing once, but probably not twice. That's just my opinion, though.
I guess I thought it would involve more of WWII, which only came at the end of the movie. Most of the movie was spent getting the cattle to their destination.
Well, Carol.. I think your mishap cursed me. I got back from my appt earlier and rebooted only to get this error message:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."
Windows would not let me reboot.. I find out after the fact that I might have been able to run System Restore from a boot command but I didn't know that or how to do it.
Ended up having to do a "non-destructive" reinstall (which isn't non-destructive really). It erased all the important files on my C: drive, meaning I lost all my emails, bookmarks, and saved passwords, plus all the pictures and files in MyDocuments. Then, my system reinstalls with internet blocked by default and it took me 90 mins to remember what setting to change to allow me to log on to the Net (it was a LAN setting).
So, I'm back on but have to reinstall all my apps (webcam. Slype, Yahoo Messenger, etc).
I usually backup my Favorites but stupidly saved them to MyDocuments so they were erased. Lost all my Roboform saved passwords so I'm bummed to say the least.
No idea how the boot.ini or hal.dll got corrupted.
Two computers down that results in a reinstall, maybe it's a good idea for everyone to take a few minutes and burn your important docs, pictures etc to disk.
Carol, did you find out what the virus was called?
P.S. as for downloads, be really careful if you download screen savers, there's lots of bad ones out there.
I did a quick search for free screensavers and just look at all the bad downloads on the FIRST page. The bad ones are highlighted in red, pic below.
I would like to apologize for not seeing your posts earlier about the auction. Thanks. I was up til 1am that Saturday...then Sunday I woke up so sick. I went to bed with a bad headache and woke up with it but worse and such a sore throat I couldn't swallow or talk. But I had to get everyone's stuff figured out for shipping quotes and packaged so I spent til 10pm last night doing that. Most went out today, but the rest will be out tomorrow. Man, that was a lot of work...but it really helped the rescue too. So thank you everyone for helping me. I do feel a bit better today. I am hitting the hay kind of early (even though it is after 10pm).

My computer is still acting up.. not letting me reinstall some apps and giving errors if I try. I can't get it to reinstall Net Framework (which I need for my screen capture program and a few others) and it has a video driver error on occasion now too.. the screen goes black for a second every now and then and displays a video driver error if I reboot. I'm gonna have to round up all my install disks and completely reformat and reinstall. The only disk I haven't been able to locate is the one for my cable modem.
Meanwhile, I'm off to bed and I'll see you all tomorrow, er, later today!

Most smiley sites are a virus waiting to be downloaded, some screensaver & font download sites as well. If it's anything you are downloading free on the internet... investigate! Do a google search & see others feedback, chances are you will find many complaints & always have your anti-virus program ready to catch anything that may sneak past you... i lost everything once many yrs ago, never again!! That was tough! EVERYTHING i need is backed up now on a reg basis, i'd hate to go through that again... sorry to hear you had trouble Carol & dave.
Almost everyone I know has had their hard drive fried one way or another. The only exceptions are people who have Macs. I always had Macs until about 6 yrs ago...I got sick of not being able to share files, paying more for software or not being able to use software I wanted. So I've got PCs now. They are a lot more flexible, but also more prone to viruses; the "bad guys" don't seem to write viruses for Macs--not enough of them to bother with, I'm guessing.
A couple years ago, I learned about the magic smoke that keeps your computer running. Take it from me, if the magic smoke escapes from your computer--it's DEAD. Completely and thouroughly, may it rest in peace.

I heard on the news that we got 9.4" ~~ Walking thru it, it feels like it!

Big Bummer....I'm still trying to get caught up from losing so much. I was not able to do a system restore. Tried many different dates and all were bad.
I know where I got my virus from.... my daughter clicked on what she thought was a youtube of "obama's acceptance speech" only it was a spoof site and a major virus.
Two computers down that results in a reinstall, maybe it's a good idea for everyone to take a few minutes and burn your important docs, pictures etc to disk.

I dont know the name of it.....my son might remember. I got it when my daughter clicked on an Obama's Acceptance Speech
I'm calling it the Obama Virus...but I dont know what it's real name is. It destroyed my computer.

I'm not too computer friendly here...but I can tell you my son had to use something called Knoppix and he was able to view my hard drive and actually ghost a few things (like my photo's) for me.... but other things like my programs were all gone because different files were deleted/destroyed. Some programs were just gone.
Knoppix let him get into things and also remove "stuff"...I dont know how he did it. I need it very simple or I"m lost....just glad he got me back up and running.
We did have to reinstall 3 times before it worked. He also had to use something he called a "scrubber" and really clean the hard drive. Seemed after each install the virus would reappear and start deleting stuff on us. That's when he "scrubbed" the drive several times before the last attempt to install...and at that attempt he chose to use IE8 (instead of IE 7) and we upgraded to SP3 (instead of SP2) because IE7 & SP2 just would not work.
Wow this is the first that I have heard of this. Good morning everyone. I own a Mac and have never had this happen to me but I know other Mac user that has so it can happen to us also. Im so sorry for all the problems this is causing. I hope they find out who did it and lock them up.
