well, I have to admit, I logged on to read this thread and read about your weather up north so I could put MY cold weather into perspective!
(violin music begins now.......)
We have had, in Northwest Florida, below freezing weather for over a week now. Waking up every day to go walk dogs at 5-6am in temps hovering in the teens. THAT is unheard of HERE. Frost on the ground, ice dripping off my patio furniture, not a pelican in site....they're staying in their nests! Yes, I know, wimps we are in the south when it comes to a chill, but I swear! It's torture for us!
So when I was able to sleep in this AM, I got myself a thermos full of hot black coffee, came out here to my "perch", my porch overlooking the water, the very COLD COLD water, hooked up my space heater which is positioned 4 inches away from my face, and said to myself....."SELF? You are going to sit out here in this 24 degree morning and quit feeling sorry for yourself! HOW? Log onto the Bubbler and read about.......GASP! Below zero wind chills and SNOW!"
Ahhh....I feel much better now, all at your expense.
Thank goodness Sig-other is still home, I sent him to Lowes to get heater tape for our OUTSIDE mounted Gas Tankless Water Heater....4 days ago the pipes froze to it. No water that day until the heat tape kicked in and thawed them. I am leaving that bad boy plugged in for a week or so. Per County Code, the unit, since it is natural gas HAS to be mounted on the outside of the house and since we are on the water, it HAS to be mounted at least 16' above the ground. (same with our electric meter, our ac units, etc) So Sig had to buy a big ladder as well.
Everyone here is totally freaking out at this "deep South Freeze".
(insert Northern torrents of laughter here.........)
On a warmer note: HOW 'BOUT DEM PACKERS?????????
Looking forward to only having 2 sets of dogs to walk this AM, and then I am OFF for the ENTIRE weekend to sit in my "woman-cave" and enjoy all the football a girl can stand! WHOOT!
Let's hope the Pack can carry us through to next weekend!
Stay warm in your igloos, I am going to go get dressed in all the gear I can find that's made of wool and covers every square inch of tender baby beach skin...........brrrrrrr.
(discontinue violin music now.......)

Toes you crack me up! LOL
Sorry you are having to deal with such "cold" weather there. We had -10 here when I got up this morning. There...I hope that makes you feel a little bit better. It is supposed to warm up to the low 30's later this week. I hope some of this snow melts...we are running out of places to put it all!
We got some good news in the mail this morning that will make my son happy when he gets home from work. He had requested a foreign exchange student for a roommate again this semester because he said they tend to party less than the locals. Last semester, his roommate was from Germany and that worked out great and he was such a nice kid too. This time his roommate hails all the way from Cooranbong, Australia! I think it's great that he gets to meet people from other countries and is able to learn about their cultures and traditions that way.
Hah, lets hope his Aussie is one of the two Aussies in the world that don't party! I've known a few and they do love their fun!

Oh that's just great! Thanks for that bit of information Dave! I guess we will find out in a week or so when school starts. If he brings his own fridge like one of the former roommates did, then we will know for sure.

Yes, I feel much better, I think I'll go put my swimsuit on and go kayaking. LOL!
I stopped at the store this AM and you can sure tell who the locals are and who the snowbirds are! I saw people wearing shorts (gasp!) and t-shirts/sweatshirts and then the other set of people wearing ski masks, gloves, ski jackets, earmuffs, etc. ha ha ha ha!
At least the sun is shining.....I remember cold Wisconsin winters with no sun for so long. I have to have SUNSHINE! I get cranky w/o it. I'm not a good "cranky" person.
Off to have some football fun now! Stay warm peoples!

It has to be really cold for us to close schools here. Doesn't happen to often but if I remember we had more cold days than snow last winter.
Not that I have kids, but isn't it something like temps of at least -5 to -10 before they close schools? I know any time we hit -20 the last few winters they still didn't close any colleges. I thought for sure they would. Not all college students have very reliable cars. The younger ones are probably driving some old piece of crap that barely starts.

I just looked up Orlando on weather.com and had to laugh at the weather advisory and wind chill advisory warnings for the area. The temp was 36. I don't think it's been that warm in Wis. in about 3 weeks. Notice I said "warm" hahaha. No, that's not warm to me, but if it's above freezing in Jan. it's a miracle.
One of my online friends was complaining it was freezing down there when it was 64. I told him at that temp I'd open a window and get some fresh air. He said he had the heat on. Mind you, a year ago he lived in Ohio. This should feel warm to him.
Anyway, us humans can do things to stay warm. I was reading about the sea creatures around FL trying to stay warm. They had to rescue 200 sea turtles from the frigid waters. The manatees and stingrays are hanging out by power plants because the water is still warm there.
We tried out 2 new recipes yesterday for supper. One was ok, not worth repeating and the other was really good. I made an Italian tomato eggplant pasta sauce in the slowcooker. It was ok, but with all the stuff I put in it, still needed something for flavor. Then I made a squash casserole with cheese in it and a cracker topping. That was really tasty. I think anything with a cracker topping is tasty. Really makes a difference on flavor.
I've been trying to come up with new recipes to make veggies more interesting. I'm picky with veggies, so I have to find 20 different ways to make the ones I do like.

We are supposed to go to my son and DIL's for supper in about an hour. I know they are having round steak but I'm not sure what else. She is not a very good cook, so hopefully my son did the cooking again this time. At least I know the dessert will be good since I made peanut butter bars. I also made sugar free jello for my hubby since he can't have sugary stuff now. I'm sure I will be hearing some whining about that from him.
I wish I would have invited them over here for supper instead. I don't feel like going out in this cold tonight. Maybe I will jump in a hot bath before we go so I can warm up a bit. I never thought I would miss having hot flashes...I sure could use them right about now!

The colleges rarely ever close due to weather. In the last three years that my son has been attending college in Platteville, they've only closed once and that was when we had that heavy snowfall of 15 inches or more recently. I guess they figure most of the students live on campus and can walk to classes. However, the teachers still have to drive there and most of them don't make it in bad weather so half the classes end up canceled anyway.
That's odd. I looked at my account and it says I have been making 9.11 posts per day. Those numbers are kind of creepy in a way.
I humbly suggest doubling to 18.22 posts per day.

Hi everyone.
Got home about 5 yesterday and promptly fell asleep for 12 hours!

I was talking about the tech schools mostly. Everyone drives from all over. They don't close for much either. I think I had a total of 3 snow days in all that time. I made a couple extra for myself when I decided no way was I going in that weather. There was a number of times it should have been canceled, because going out in the dark and crappy weather is scary at times.
(had to edit because Cindy says I can't use "I got" so I had to change it to "I had." Got that?
Well then, are you going to provide me with a free paycheck? 'Cause it's not going to happen with me working days now and all the other stuff I got coming up.
