We never go out for breakfast unless it's on vacation. I don't find most restaurant's breakfasts all that interesting. Most places have the same old pancakes and eggs. I can make that at home. I've never had a Crapper Barrel breakfast and probably never will since I don't like their dinners. Their chicken and dumplings is nasty. I think it comes from a can.
When i go out for breakfast it'e either a breakfast buffet (OCB has a great one) or a big ol' steak & eggs. I went to Ponderosa's breakfast buffet yesterday... so good!
Can I say wtf? I'm on google looking for a picture of a couple about to kiss or kissing. I google "kissing" and 2/3 of the images are girls kissing girls. ick ick ick. Geez google give me a break. I don't think the Hershey's Kiss animation I'm doing requires 2 girls kissing.
I'm an early riser and a late night person. (don't ask, I have no idea how that works). I love breakfast out once in awhile when I can eat good things and I don't have to clean up or do all the work. Same with dinner. I love dinner out at least once a week or when we can afford to go. The really good thing is sometimes I love eating breakfast late in the evening. Kinda like Topsy turvy night.
I have to say, Old Country Buffet, Cracker Barrel, IHOP, places that are chains are more to my liking when I am with my younger kids. When I want a real breakfast I go to a place that serves real home cooking food. There is a big difference than a chain buffet.
As far as Old Country, again if you haven't tried their breakfast (you can get them anytime of day/evening) it may be worth a try just because they are better than their nasty dinners. The only dinner I will eat at OCB is the fried cat fish, I like their coating on the fish. But if you really don't like OCB I can see why you avoid even trying the breakfast there, since there are so many other good places to go.
Wow! You all have been quite talkative here today...three pages! Why am I not surprised it was mostly about food though? LOL
We like to go to Old Country Buffet in Madison but haven't been there for some time since it's way over on the East side. We used to go to it a lot when there was one on the West side. I have only been to the Cracker Barrel in the Dells once for lunch and I didn't think it was that bad.
There is a Chinese buffet place in Reedsburg that has really good food and my husband insists on stopping there when ever we are in the area. The place with the best buffet around here though is by far at Ho Chunk Casino in the Dells.
This is strange. I went to two stores in Fennimore yesterday that were right next to each other and wrote out a check at both stores. The total of the items I bought at each store was exactly $43.76 each. What are the odds on that? Weird.
I've only been to OCB once and that was a long time ago. I wasn't impressed. I guess for a good buffet you need to hit the ones in Vegas. Some of them really put a big spread of food.
The Chinese buffets that I've been to are ok, but mostly just a meal to fill you up. Nothing that said this is the best food I ever had. They all seem about the same to me and not the first choice for me in a restaurant. The one in town here always has the same thing. It would be nice if they offered something different, because they do have a regular menu to order off of so it's not like they can't make it.
I like IHop, but I never go to any in Wis. I've only been to them on vacation. I like the chocolate pancakes or the cornmeal ones if they still have them. Not really too hard to make pancakes. I don't think you can really get a bad one at a restaurant unless they burn it.
I wish they had a Bob Evans in Wis. They have some good breakfast like different stuffed french toast.
I have referred to it by both at one time or another but it seems there is always someone who disagrees with me and says the opposite of what I call it.
So which is correct? Or is it another one of those regional location things like soda and pop?
They have an absolutely awesome buffet at the Horseshoe Casino in Tunica in terms of variety and food quality.. I think the one at Harrah's in Kansas City is also pretty good..
We have a really good chinese buffet here in Carthage but they have one in nearby Joplin that has over 150 items on the buffet which is even better!

Finally got the hot water heater fixed.. he had to drain it which was a major undertaking because of where the appliance is.. the bedroom rug is mere inches away and got a good bit of water on it. I wasn't amused.
I say both guess it depends on what we are eating maybe? Don't really know.
My Mother always called it supper when we grew up, not sure if I ever heard Dinner unless it was for our Sunday meal which was always a meal that she worked longer on. Supper was always exactly 5:00. We had to be home with our hands washed at 5:00!
But then she always called our living room the front room and the sofa was a couch, and butter was always margarine whether it was butter or not.
At least she didn't say Davenport for the couch, or oleo for the margarine.

All this talk about food has made me hungry and I have no idea what to make for supper tonight. "sigh"
What are you cooking tonight? Or are you going out on the town for supper or ordering delivery food?
Tonight I cut up a pork tenderloin into chops, and sprinkled onion salt, garlic powder, and pepper on them and pan fried them in olibr oil. I also made mashed potatoes (from scratch) and cut up a french loaf and spread a mixture of butter, garlic powder, italian seasoning, and parmesan cheese on them. On my slices I also put chrished red chilis on. Not bad for it being just me and the kids tonight! well, I also fed the babysitter.
I never used "supper" until I met my mother-in-law. Dinner was the biggest meal of the day, so if you ate it at noon, it was dinner, and then that night you had supper. Otherwise you had lunch (smaller) and then dinner (larger).
I call it supper usually. Sometimes call it dinner because you hear it that way. Maybe it's supper if you eat at home and dinner if you go out. I don't know. Then again I grew up saying the noon meal was dinner unless it was at school or work then it was lunch. LOL confusing!

LOL PK, my aunt used to say davenport. That sounds like something a rich person would say. I use both couch and sofa, since you can't be a sofa potato, can you? I think most people use both around here and never think twice about it.
We didn't do the big sunday dinner at our house usually. My mom wanted her day off, because she owns a retail shop and that was her only day off. Now she closes early on Sat. and closes Sun. and Mon. She said after all these years she wants a two day weekend and she deserves it because she was Wonder Woman when I was a kid.

I had yesterdays leftovers from Texas Roadhouse.

Cooking one of my Mom's dinners she use to make. Ribs rolled up with home made stuffing inside it. Almost done and smelling so good in here.

wow i would have traded my dinner for either one of those home cooked meals... now i'm hungry & its almost midnight, thanks!
Please excuse---feeling long-winded this AM.
food food food! lol! Breakfast on the run today.....I am SUPPOSED to be walking 2 dogs right now but it's pouring rain......and MY dogs need to go out too, what to do?
I won't set out cerial, sounds like ya'll have had enough.....how about some homemade cheese and apple filled puff pastry? Something BAD for you? I'll still set out fresh fruit, OJ and of course, hot strong COFFEE!
Speaking of food.....I still cannot imagine how anyone can not like veggies! I would wither and die w/o my daily fix of several. It was difficult on vacation at my cousins, they are strickly "meat & potatoes", but they understood my need for FOOD...lol.....and I stopped at the grocery on the way in. When I steamed an entire bag of spinach for myself the night they cooked brats (it was just brats, chips and pickles ONLY) they sat there in disbelief as to WHY anyone would eat spinach with brats. (I had already eaten a salad that day, and my peas, broccoli-crunchy, etc) It was our last meal before I left, had to eat it then!
When sig-other is home he'll take a bowl of ice cream to bed as a treat, and I am eating a giant bowl of veggies for a snack! Especially edamame....that's a favorite. Down south here, a lot of restaurants WAY over-cook the veggies. YUCK! Just steamed and naked or with a drizzle of balsamic and I am one happy camper!
Dinner or Supper? On vacation my cousins called LUNCH "dinner" and DINNER "supper".
???
They also had a rule I forgot about until I got there. (this is a more formal side of my family)
If you eat....it has to be "Family Table". i.e., you just don't eat by yourself or anywhere BUT the "family table" with EVERYONE.
I was excused most times (one of my cousins scolded me daily) as I woke up every day at 4:30-5am to take my walk or go out on the dock w/my coffee. When I came back in at 7-ish, everyone still sleeping....I ate my bowl of cerial and usually went back out again. (I hate being cooped up inside, even though it was cold)
9-ish, they were all seated at "Family Table" eating an artery clogging full breakfast of bacon/sausage/eggs/etc. (blech)
I was scolded, along with my older cousin when we spent one morning until 12:30 out in the woods exploring. When we returned...the rest of the crew was sitting at "Family Table" waiting for us with a full spread of sandwich stuff, uneaten......they would not eat until we returned. ??? How weird is that?
So what? We were LATE? EAT!!
Another day, while everyone was out running errands, and I skipped breakfast and it was 10:30am, I decided to make myself a sandwich. My cousin came home and scolded me because I did not wait until noon (sharp) for "Family Table"!
arrrrrrg!!!!!!!!
I made a "snackie-feast" for the football game on Sunday (buffalo wings, chips, guac., salsa, veggies, dip., etc), game on noon-3pm. That totally threw everyone into a tailspin as they had "Family Table" at noon (sharp) while I was busy trimming wings and making dips. I put the snack food out before halftime (on the TABLE), and they all came back in and SAT DOWN for a "formnal" meal!!! I said "this is snack food----grazing style---pick at it all through the game". Stunned looks came my way.
????
Both of older cousins had never even heard of Buffalo Wings and they were using knives and forks and picking at them. I kept coming into the dining room, picking a few things and eating, "snacking" if you will, then going BACK into the living room to watch the game. They just didn't know what to DO!
(no food consumed anywhere except dining room)
Now, come on! These people were born and raised in WI! I love them dearly. But WTH?
Next time I go up (I already found a place) I am renting a cabin right up the road from them so I can still walk over.....but have my own fridge filled with food and eat and cook whenever I feel like it. And even sit on the DAVENPORT (as my Mom called it!) with a bowl of chips in my lap to watch the game!
MY BAD!
I don't do "Family Table".
Oh yea......Soda or Pop? Almost everywhere in the deep south, people call a "carbonated beverage" COKE or COLD DRINK. Coke can mean anything.....the server will ask "Coke coke? or Mountain Dew", etc. Same with "Cold Drink". Florida it's "Soda".
I learned a hard lesson nd had to waste a double shot of Maker's Mark Bourbon at a bar up north. I asked the bartender for a double Maker's and Soda. (carbonated water) I got it with 7up or Sprite. yuck yuck yuck! I mentioned he made a mistake, I wanted SODA....he said THAT'S what is in there! I gave up and just bought another drink, but made it bourbon and water.
I was totally confused with him arguing w/me about that until when we were seated for DINNER (not SUPPER, ha!) and the waitress said SELTZER? when I asked for bourbon and SODA.
Seltzer? Hmm.....that's where I went wrong. Haven't heard that term in a very LONG time! I went with water.....again.
Ah, the regional differences, gotta love it!

wow you are a true veggie eater! I dislike them sooo much. There are a few i'll eat, such as corn, lettuce, tomatoes and a few others. An entire bag of spinach? not sure i could even watch someone eat that lol
I did family meals while the kids were growing up (at the dining table), because i usually cooked breakfast & dinner daily, but it wasn't a rule, that we could only eat at the table & no one was surprised if we had snacks while watching tv or anything lol munchies are a common thing.
I'm shocked that anyone born & raised in WI wouldn't know what buffalo wings are or how to eat them (LOL @ using a fork/knife)... I LOVE me some buffalo sauce, especially on chicken or pork, i would die laughing if i'd seen that.
LMAO @ them sitting down to enjoy a 'meal', rather than eating munchies during the game.. I would have love to see your face when they all gathered around the table for their game 'meal' lol
Glad you had fun & I'm sure you enjoy time with the family, but yeah i can't say I blame you for renting a cabin close by, next time lol
I been up most the night with chills & sick to my stomach. I called in sick to work & laying in bed with my laptop & tv remote now. not sure i'll be doing much more than that today.
lol guess that is kinda wrong way to explain it...it's 'folded' more than 'rolled'. You lay the ribs meat down and put a layer of home made stuffing all along the inside and then bring the ends up to meet, like folding them, or since it's rolled where the ends go up we call it rolling it. Anyways, you carefully over lap the ends a bit so everything stays inside and turn it over so the meat side is up. I then put it in a cooking bag that way topped with a can of cream of mushroom soup mixed with a bit of water, salt, pepper, etc. Cook it for a few hours and it is sooo good.
My Mom use to do this for a Sunday meal only once in awhile so I always thought it was an 'expensive' meal. lol Ribs at Sam's Club is not pricey at all.
Anyways, eating ribs like this until I grew up I honestly didn't know people put BBQ sauce on ribs. But I do love my country ribs with Sweet Baby Ray's Sauce now.
Toes...I chuckled all the way through your post about the 'family' meals etc. lol lol
I am all for family eating together around the dining room table. Actually it's rather fun to eat and talk about the day. When I grew up that was the way 'supper' was all about. 5:00 sharp. Dinner at the table. Home cooked meal.
But let's face it, there is nothing wrong with getting a pizza and gathering around in the living room to watch a movie together. To me that is just as fun, just in a different way. I'm pretty flexible.
This summer many times my daughter and I would eat breakfast on the patio table and my son would eat watching t.v. inside.
I have to say I actually wondered if they were Amish how strict they sounded.
Oh..the part about how they waited at the table for you and you were late...lol lol That is what a microwave is for. If you are late here you can expect to find your meal wrapped in the microwave to reheat, or in the refrigerator if it needs to stay cold. When I want to eat, I am not waiting for anyone. lol
