I realize I'm jumping the gun here a little because Fall is just starting but I figured.. why not.
Are you ready for the white stuff?
Did you get all your outside projects done yet?
Winterize your vehicle yet?
Well you get the idea right.
I still have a window to replace on the garage door. I did get the gutters on the house cleaned. I have around 10 other projects to finish before it gets too cold out.
OMG! I'm still suffering post-traumatic stress from our last winter! Needless to say, I'm not ready--still need to get new tires on the Sebring and muster up some mental fortitude to deal with my long (and seemingly dangerous) commutes to work each morning. I'm hoping to talk the boss into letting me work from home a day or two each week during the winter months. Yeah, I've become a big stressed-out baby where driving in blizzards is concerned!

What got me thinking about making a post/poll like this was:
I was driving around Saturday and it just seemed like it was about to snow, no kidding. The temperature was in the 50's (not under 32 but still a little chilly) and the clouds looked like those famous snow clouds. The next day it was almost 70?
I actually love the winter month's and am looking forward to the cold weather!
Oh, you must have a short driveway or live in a complex that the parking lot gets plowed.
You must not have to get up and get kids to school on time and then back home again..(work doesn't count) lol
You must have a remote starter for your garage kept car. So not only is it snow free, but warm when you leave in the morning.
You must mean you like just the cold ... and not the tons of snow and ice?
Please tell me all of the above or most of it is right. Can anyone actually look forward to ice, snow, and all the other stuff that comes along with our winters??? lol

I think that is my problem too. I have no idea why last winter seemed to be so awful to me....I lived in this area my whole life so I am use to winters, if anyone can actually be 'use to' winter around here.
But for whatever reason, last year just about did me in.
It could be that I just got my nearly new van that seemed to get stuck in everything and I was constantly made aware that I could put a dent on it and actually did without my knowledge as to how it happened.
Maybe it's because I am not suppose to go out in the cold (pneumonia problem when breathing in cold air) Yet I have a slight slant to my driveway that made me totally lose all traction on it with the smallest amount of ice.
So it could be because I laid out over 800 pounds of salt on that darn driveway over the course of the winter not to mention many bags of Kitty Litter when salt became scarce.
How about the huge blizzard that just kept dumping snow all day and our school district decided to be the only schools open that day in the entire state of Wisconsin! Of course my kids have perfect attendance so my oldest daughter (her son also went to school) and I shoveled all day keeping the driveways open so we could actually get the kids at the end of the day.
Oh...yeah. Now that I'm remember all of this I am sooo not looking forward to yet another long winter. blah...
I do have to say that we did start getting ready today though..we worked all day long cleaning the garage out, getting snow blowers working, moving things around, finding the salt spreader and yeah...finding a couple bags of salt left from last year.
So, I have actually started getting ready. But we have a long way to go. I still have to have my fall rummage sale! Hopefully in two weeks. Pray it doesn't snow before then!
This is making me think, maybe I should get some hockey skates for this winter.
When I was younger I had a blast skating. Last time I went skating ( older ) I walked out on the ice and my bottom hit before I went two feet, lol After that I was fine skating.
The only thing I think winter is great for is taking pictures. I love to get them during a storm. Made me think of how I fell one time...I was out one night around midnight. We were having a beautiful snow storm that was coming down in huge flakes. I was in such a trance with all the white falling and taking pictures of it sticking to the branches with the night sky behind it and I fell backwards in a snow pile! As I was falling I was still taking pics.
Ice storms are get to get pictures of it all too. also love to run down to the lake when it's below zero, makes for an interesting time. Almost eerie how the waves are full of ice and sometimes the lake is frozen.. like all the life is frozen in time. Lake Michigan is huge and so full of strong waves so when you see it still, it can be humbling to think of what the bitter cold can do.
I've lived in the northern states much of my life and, sure, there are some aspects of snow that I don't enjoy but I'd much rather have colder weather than not.
I've literally had to dig my way out of a house covered with snow, been in snow with drifts higher than a bus, and, yes, I've had to shovel many a walkway or driveway. I was once caught on a city bus in a snow storm seven hours trying to get home from college one year.
But, for me, Christmas is not Christmas without snow and lots of it.

Digging to get out of a house...reminds me of back in the early 80's? or maybe very late 70's? We had a terrible snowy winter. (just across the border in Illinois). Really dumped on over and over. We lived in a large ranch home with a carport. We had to keep shoveling off the carport (fear of the heavy snow on it) and at times the drifts would get up as high as the roof in places. Started to wonder if we would ever see Spring that year.
Driving? Getting around the corners were near impossible at some intersections since the snow was piled way high from the plows just trying to keep up with the snow.
Our dog had a fun time that winter. Seems like every time she had to go to the bathroom the yard got higher and higher and she had to climb around to find a place to go! lol
But I don't really remember being too upset with it. Had to much fun helping kids make tunnels and snowmen and snow ball fights. lol
It's funny that most winters don't bother me except last winter. Please...oh please...tell me it's not because I am just getting older!!! My oldest brother (13 years older) has a home in Florida where he goes in the winter and I use to laugh at him. How can he miss winter?? It's part of life to have snow. Last winter I actually envied him. He told me that would happen when I got old! lol NOOOO! that can't be it! *stomping foot*
This reminds me of the August 1st back to school ads about Summer being over...yechh!
Don't even want to think about it...Just soak up sun till well into November I hope...then when it hits in December, know it will only be a few months and NOT SIX months!
Yeah, me too!! But I would change it to say, I hate Wisconsin winters. The rest of the year I can handle it.
What I hate about winter (lots of things!) is that when I make plans to go out on Friday or Saturday nights, the stupid snow ruins my plans and I can't leave town. I hate scraping car windows, hate shoveling, hate driving in the crap, hate being cold all the time and dressing up in 10 layers of clothing. I hate having all that sand from the road in my car and house. I hate sloppy snow on or in my shoes. I hate worrying about someone hitting me on my way to/from work. I hate having a dirty car with road salt all over it.
The only good thing about winter is there are no bugs outside.
As adults, we tend to lose a bit of that magic which is a shame.
I can tell you exactly what happens. You have to go to work no matter what. There are no snow days. You have to clear off the car after a long day at work or before you go to work, if you park outside. You have to worry about getting hit by someone else on the road. You have to worry about getting stuck in the snow. You have to deal with frozen car doors and ice on your windshield. Shoveling isn't something you do for fun anymore, like when you were a kid. Yeah, that's pretty much what happened to the fun.
I hate winter weather even more now that I work out of town and after driving many nights to and from school (40 min. away from home). I had to deal with not being able to see the roads in the dark when they were covered in snow. Then there was the dirty slush on my windshield that came from the cars ahead of me. Sometimes it was big snowflakes coming straight at my windshield hypnotically. I am so glad I'm done with school and don't have to deal with driving there.
If I had the choice between cold or snow, I would take cold. I don't have to shovel cold or clear cold off my car. Cold doesn't keep me from driving out of town or make me spin-out on the highway. But if I really had my choice I would pick 70-85 degrees and sunny with low humidity.

Oh you said it so well. Oh, and don't forget having to waste money on buying salt for the driveway and then having to spread it all out so you can get over the ice that builds up.
Trying to get your car washed on a decent day only for it to drop in temperature and have your locks freeze...
Or walking in the slop when it thaws and get those nasty salt lines on the bottom of your jeans.
Always looking for that 'other' glove that seems to always get lost.
Or putting a hat on or scarf when you are outside only to come in and take it off and your hair is full of static!
Speaking of frozen car door locks. I was talking to a guy from Columbia online about all the negatives of winter. He has never experienced snow or freezing temps. I told him about frozen door locks. His answer was to pour warm water on the lock. I told him no, no, no, that just makes it worse, because the water freezes. After I told him all the things I hate about winter, he said I ruined his fantasy of seeing snow LOL.

yeah that!! lol
I can live with cold and central air is the bomb during summer months, but snow seriously sux!

I see you're in Jefferson county... did you get hit by the floods? I think anyone that suffered flooding should get a reprieve from snow this winter. You had enough water to deal with!
A friend that does salting for businesses/homes said he can't get salt for this coming winter. All the municipalities are panicking and buying trainloads of salt. If that keeps up, it may be impossible for the small contractor or homeowner to get salt. Can you imagine the salt prices going higher than the gas prices?
I didn't get affected by the flooding other than roads being closed. We don't live in a low lying area and the man who built our house did a good job of making sure there was good drainage. Our sump pump hardly runs most of the time. Our neighbors, who all went with a certain builder, all have drainage problems. Sump pumps run all the time and water in basements if there is heavy rain. Funny thing is some of them sit higher than us and still have problems and we don't.

Oh you just made my day...not.
I simply can't get up my driveway without the salt on it. It really isn't much of a slant but just enough to make it bad. What also is bad is the fact that it is a shared drive coming up between the two houses before it separates to each house in the back. So if you slip...well, let's just say there isn't much room for sliding around before you will slide into a house.
I think there should be a rule that homeowners can get their share too. But I did find when the salt was getting harder to find last winter that buying the pellets for water softeners helped some. Not as good as the regular salt but it helped in a pinch.
Guess I'm going to hang around the local Menards and try to grab from the first supply that comes in.
Right now I'm thinking that our friends that used to own a snow removal business made the right move in May. They did snow removal for about 3 years and after this last winter they decided to move to Phoenix. Winter wore them out. They also owned a maid service, lawn care business and he drove truck for someone on top of that. They sold both businesses and moved. I'm sure they will be rubbing it in in December when they send out Christmas cards.
