Hey there everybody,
I need your wisdom My fiancee and I are moving to WI, but we don't know where to start our search. We would prefer a relatively small community that would have jobs, a place, and (fingers crossed) some accessible, awesome nature. If you all could give me a heads up on what might be good towns to start with, I would appreciate it so much.
Thanks
well, I'm in a small village, lots of nature. No sounds of the city. I see stars at night.....wildlife during the day and night. BUT no jobs. You either drive to Waukesha, Sussex, Milwaukee, Madison etc...for a job. Unless you plan on opening your own business A lot of small business owners here where I live. Or are fortunate enough to land a job in one of the neighboring communities.
You could do a search on Ashland Wisconsin. We're located on Chequamegon Bay (Lake Superior). Tons of nature. Just today I was driving down the street (in the city) and three deer ran in front of me, err I didn't have my camera with me.
We have between 8,000 - 9,000 people in the Ashland area.
Jobs - not the greatest but I guess it all depends on what your good at. For jobs check out the link below: Wisconsin Job Search
The weather in the area:
The summers are between 70F - 85F on average but do go up to around 90F or more sometimes.
The winters are between 20F and -20F. It seems like the winters are getting warmer in this area.
This area may be something you may fall in love with. Do your homework first. Moving to a new town/city is a big step.
Tell me about it! I lived it. OMG it was horrible. They were making us take 150 mile detours just to get anywhere at times. Well, I refused to take those, I just didn't drive very far. But the detours I did have to take too me 40+ miles out of my way at times.
Speedway in Jefferson along with Burger Corner right across the way (intersection of N and 26) are still closed. Damage is so bad. They had 18 feet of water at that intersection. The national guard was there (many places) blocking it from being passed.
The houses on that street have so much damage. As the flood waters rose the car fix it place behind speedway was using tow trucks to pull customers cars out of the flood waters.
My son found it easier to sleep at Walmart then take the long detour home.
Tyson, Purina and many places just had to close. Tyson had so much damage that 1/2 the plant destroyed and not reopening.
My own personal pictures I have are unreal!!!
Kinkade farm over on Hwy 106 became Lake Jefferson. He is a big farm for potatoe, onion, carrots things like that. He still has water standing in areas as of yesterday.
Roads closed for weeks on end.
THE SMELL!
When the national guard came in and we had meeting points around the city to pick up people willing to help bag. Finally they brought in jail inmates to do the jobs.
Just last month my friend who is in Fort just now got her basement emptied out from all the water. She was one of few who stayed behind to save her house in that area. It came a point where she had no telephone or electricity and was living off a generator just too keep the pumps going. She is now finally all bleached down and they are starting to repair/rebuild.
Some road I could take you down today where folks are still gutting out the house. Sand bags still stand. Again, the smell
I have to see if I can figure out how to share my flood pic photos. Those that you found make you saw WOW...then mine will make you say WOW O WOW!
It was horrible...and during all that. I had 65 sick baby raccoons that needed medicating 3x a day along with sub q fluids and bottle feedings. I was soaked for 2 weeks solid trying to care for outside animals.
Well I'm a city girl that loves the country and nature. So I have to say, Kenosha (very south/east part of the state) is my place to live.
We have everything here to pick from in the way of shopping, a beautiful lake, things to do, good schools, dining, and places to look for a job. With being so close to the Illinois border you also have job opportunities toward Chicago. Milwaukee is only a short distance away too which offers jobs.
If you want wild life you can pick more West of us which is Kenosha County. You are out of the city life, but not so far that you have to travel.
We are about just a little over an hour from Chicago, two hours from Madison, 40 minutes from Milwaukee, maybe 50 minutes from Burlington, Whitewater isn't much further than that. Lots of interesting places to choose from here.
And the best part is you can always go camping further up north for vacation time.
I'm a little bit country
And I'm a little bit rock 'n roll
I'm a little bit of Memphis and Nashville
With a Little bit of Motown in my soul
I don't know if it's good or bad
But I Know I Love It So
I'm a little bit country, I'm a little bit rock 'n roll
He's a little bit gentle, he's a little bit runnin' wild
She's a little bit a full-grown woman,
she's a little bit of a child
Don't know if I'm happy or sad
My music makes me whole
I'm a little bit country
And I'm a little bit rock 'n roll
I checked out your link for your area. Wow those floods look bad, link below: Jefferson County
Any rain we get will hopefully run into Lake Superior. As far I know we never had a flood but there's always a first.
I hope this works... this picture http://www.co.jefferson.wi.us/UserFi...ER_AVE%202.gif
is the car fix it place right behind Super America. He had to pull out customers cars with the tow truck and park them a few block inland.
Across from that is Burger Corner. I'll see if I can find a pic of that in what you linked here. I have pics of this as the water recieded.
Like I said neither the gas station or Burger Corner is open. The car fix it place is back up and running
this pic of this liquor store is a good 1/2 block or more down from the intersection of N & 26 (Burger Corner and the gas station) Just behind the gas station is the car fix it place
this pic the water has rose more and now the photographer is standing past the liquor store shooting down 26
see to the left that red circle with the white lettering.
That is Burger Corner and same side road across from them is the gas station...beind the gas station the car fix it place
Amazing in this picture the bridge is still open based on the white truck I'm seeing. That is the brige to get you to the other side of Jefferson. That did end up shutting down because the water in this area got to be 18ft deep right at N & 26
This business is not open yet either...actually I think it just got up and running because I saw a sign last week that told hunters they could register deer there.
This is down 4 blocks from the "car fix it place" same side of the street.
They lost everything as well
They had the flowers out, all gardening items out. Store up ready to welcome summer.
They fought hard to keep the water out.
The river just kept rising and rising and soon it was inside the store....
the water even came up over the road
I'll have to see if I can dig out after shots of all this...alot of my pics show water marks on how high the water was.
remember the liquor store picture? This business is down from them, same side of the street. This was taken a few days later as the water rose even higher
OMG now I had not seen this pic until now. This is the farmer I was telling you about over on 106, Kinkade farm...he is our big potato, onion, carrot farmer out here....
He still has water standing in his fields. He had a lake all summer long
Just replace yourwebsite.com/yourimage.jpg with where the image is on the internet.
You may want to resize your images because I'm not sure if this website will auto resize pictures posted in the forum. I have a wide screen monitor so larger pictures fit nicely on my screen. If someone is running 800x600 resolution the picture may break the template or push the template over to the right.
I used one of your pictures below to show you how the code works to show pictures in the forums.
You Guys have been great, I'll start with all of the links you provided, and move on from there. We are coming from the Richmond area in VA, and need to get out of this place, it's just soul sucking. I saw some pictures of WI, and that's what I'm going for, beautiful places and beautiful people
Those flood pictures are astounding, holy moley, just crazy.
Thanks again

A fellow pig rescuer friend of mine packed up his pig sanctuary from Culpeper VA ~ MINI PIGS ~ and moved them all the way to Jamestown, TN
What a sight that was herding up all those pigs, both pots and farm hog, wild boars, domestics.... the car-a-van of trailers and haulers was something else.
First thing I always do when contemplating a move is request travel guides from the state tourism website(s) and then narrow it down to contacting the local chamber of commerce in the areas I'm interested in. I've even subscribed to local newspapers from the areas I've thought of moving to. But looks like you're getting plenty of help right here at the Bubbler as well!
