Wisconsin Historic Sites

My husband and I had a chance to visit Old World Wisconsin over the weekend. I hadn't been there in almost 20 years since I took a school field trip in the 80's. All I remembered from that trip was getting a splinter in my finger on one of the homestead porches.

What fun it is to revisit Old World Wisconsin as a "grown-up!"

It's still a great place for kids (especially girls into Laura Ingalls and the American Girls books) but I felt that I got more out of it as an adult. The costumed interpreters knew so much about the houses they were in. I learned a lot about the families that lived in these homes and their daily lives... boy, do we have it easy! I also got a lot of decorating ideas for our 1910 home!

Even if you're not a history buff, the Old World Wisconsin grounds are beautiful. They also have trams to take you to the homesteads now!

Attendance has been down at Wisconsin's historic sites and its a shame. There is so much to see at these places and they are very much worth preserving. With all the technology and media thrown at us every day, it's so peaceful to take a day away from the present to explore the past.

Re: Wisconsin Historic Sites

I try to visit Old World WI a few times every summer. The kids and I have a great time there.

Re: Wisconsin Historic Sites

I went with my son's class to Old World Wisconsin a few years back. It was really very interesting, educational, and fun for the children as well as adults. I would highly recommend this place.

Tatting III (Advanced Lace Making)
Saturday, May 31, 2008, 10 am-3:30 pm

Have you learned to shuttle tat but need guidance to reach the next level? This is your golden opportunity to become more comfortable with the craft. You'll find this class more challenging than Tatting II, which is a prerequisite unless you're very comfortable with the basic knot and movements.

Ticket Info:
$60 per person (all materials provided, though you may bring your own thread and shuttles if you wish). Advance registration and full payment are required. Download a workshop registration form here (PDF 71KB).

Re: Wisconsin Historic Sites

Ever since my whole "riding my bike not using gas" idea, I never go anywhere cool..... We went to Old World Wisconsin on field trips when I was in grade school (actually believe it or not that was... 20 years ago... getting old)

I should go back for a visit, I remember it being pretty interesting to see....

On another related note, anyone subscribe to the RSS feeds at the WI Historical Society site? There are interesting items in there all the time!
