My husband and I had a chance to visit
Old World Wisconsin over the weekend. I hadn't been there in almost 20 years since I took a school field trip in the 80's. All I remembered from that trip was getting a splinter in my finger on one of the homestead porches.
What fun it is to revisit Old World Wisconsin as a "grown-up!"
It's still a great place for kids (especially girls into Laura Ingalls and the American Girls books) but I felt that I got more out of it as an adult. The costumed interpreters knew so much about the houses they were in. I learned a lot about the families that lived in these homes and their daily lives... boy, do we have it easy! I also got a lot of decorating ideas for our 1910 home!
Even if you're not a history buff, the Old World Wisconsin grounds are beautiful. They also have trams to take you to the homesteads now!
Attendance has been down at
Wisconsin's historic sites and its a shame. There is so much to see at these places and they are very much worth preserving. With all the technology and media thrown at us every day, it's so peaceful to take a day away from the present to explore the past.
