Wisconsin Assembly Votes to Make English the Official Language

"while Wisconsin should never be an ‘English-only’ state, it must never become an ‘English-optional’ state.”

The Wisconsin Assembly voted 57-40 early this morning to make English the official language of the state and require accountability for the printing of documents in other languages. This marks the first time that a bill to make English the official language has passed in a chamber of the Wisconsin legislature.

I wonder if "ya hey der" is considered English?

And what about towns like Milwaukee, La Crosse, Prairie du Sac, Mannitowoc, etc that have French or Indian names? Will they have to change to conform to English?

LOL. I like the new names for easier spelling but the whole issue in itself I am glad to see some progress.

I think English should be the mainstay here in the States, period... some places you can't even get a job unless you're bilingual.

I made sure our younger kids were bilingual. It's just something you need to get ahead now and opens the world up just a bit more. But when I hear things like Spanish will be our main language in years from now, that is totally wrong. This is America and we need to keep English as our language.

I think it's great where people learn a second language but why not a push for a niversal language like Esperanto?
