We have a bunch of people from all over the State that must try an occasional fish fry. I have found that there are some great places that mostly the locals know about.
In your opinion, where is the best fish fry that you know about?
I have two that I will share.
First is Skinny's in Lake Geneva, WI. This is a lightly breaded Icelandic cod in large tender fillets that comes with cole slaw, choice of potato and applesauce. You get a large quantity and can choose between a 3 and a 5 piece order.
Second is The Nimrod Inn in Athelstane, WI. There are way to many choices to make at this fish fry. Some are blue gill, perch, walleye, trigger, cod or a combo plate. The salad bar is just one of those old style supper club salad bars that have numerous choices including soup and a big pot of buttered chicken gizzards.
Meyer's Restaurant, 6015 W. Forest Home Ave., Greenfield
Meyer's is usually packed for fish fry. You get a starter of salads (potato salad, bean salad, etc.). Fish fry comes with soup, dessert and a choice of potato. You can get the traditional fried fish or baked. I prefer a combo of the two. I think the price is around $10 these days, and that includes your initial plate and a second helping. The Polka and Dixieland bands that play during dinner are a nice touch!
The fish here is all-you-can-eat and has a delicious, crispy batter. The rice and refried beans sides are a nice change from the traditional potato pancakes. I swear Romine's has the best refried beans... they have a unique, bacony taste. I can't recall the price of a fish dinner, I think it's under $9.00.
Somewhere in the forums we have a topic going on fish frys. I'll have to check around and see if I can come up with it.

Skinny's in Lake Geneva, WI
Since we live in Kenosha we go into Lake Geneva from time to time so I was interested in your comment on Skinny's. (never heard of it before).
I did a search on it and came up with some comments not in favor of this place anymore. Apparently it use to be great a while back but there has been changes to the menu etc recently.
Skinny did have another restaurant a couple of years ago that was located near Big Foot Beach State Park called Skinny's Lake Shore. His other restaurant is Skinny's South Shore and is located about 3 miles past the park on South Lake Shore Drive.
This is what one would call a gourmet biker bar. If you are there in the summer you might find a bunch of Harley's along with several Mercedes. The crowd is a mixture of people that enjoy great food.
I would have to rate Skinny's as one of the top places to eat in the area. His Chef (Jill) started in February and started a cooler that you select your entree from and she will prepare it the way you like. You can add your sides individually. The cooler option is from Wednesday through Sunday. His regular menu is always available. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday nights.
Go early for the fish fry because sometimes there gets to be a long wait for a table.
Skinny's phone # IS 262-248-3631.
If your ever up north try the Lindsey bar and grill, subperb fish fry and great company! no one is a stranger! Hyw V just south west of Marshfield wi. Another good fry is T bangers in Auburndale wi. Hwy 10 between Marshfield and St Point great food good company!!!
My Dad's backyard.
He only fried fish outside and had a special single burner gas stove and used a huge cast iron frying pan( very thick for a more consistant heat). He would get the oil to the point where it was just about to ignite and he would drop the fish in it. Walleye, bluegill, perch, crapies and in his younger years brook and rainbow trout. They were lightly breaded, very lightly. The family got together and we all enjoyed.
While I do enjoy fish at various places in Wisconsin, this was THE BEST.

....Now, a very great man once said
That some people rob you with a fountain pen
It didn’t take too long to find out
Just what he was talkin’ about
A lot of people don’t have much food on their table
But they got a lot of forks ’n’ knives
And they gotta cut somethin’....

The best Fish fry in the Lake Geneva area is Buoys Lakeside on Powers Lake.
All you can eat Alaskan Pollock with special recipe Potato pancakes and out of this world home made Cole Slaw. Buoys also features hand-tossed Pizza.
My friends and I use a flour/seasoning/egg wash/cracker crumb breading/deep frying technique that turns our fish into what we like to call "Wisconsin Gold".
It's awesome!
We're all spoiled. The best batter-fried fish in any restaurants we know of are merely tolerable.
Most places around here(Chippewa Valley) serve their fish with coleslaw and some kind of potato...usually fries, jo-jos, chips, etc.
There's very little fishfry diversity around the Eau Claire area.
I wish we could get potato pancakes with ours!

My new favorite... the VFW in Hartford. The Friday fish fry goes from 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The all-you-can-eat fried fish is $6.75 and it includes bread and a potato choice. I had the poor man's lobster last week and it was outstanding. We always splurge on the appetizers... most of them are under $2.00 a plate. You can't beat the prices, the food is awesome and the staff is very friendly.

Another place that we started going to is Fischers on Button's Bay. This is an all you care to eat, fried or broiled, home made potato pancakes, apple sauce, home made cole slaw and bread for $8.95. Fischers has a great view of Geneva Lake and is located on the east end of the lake next to Big Foot Beach State Park.
Try it. Home
My family discovered the fish fry at the Elk's Lodge at 48th & Good Hope Rd in Milwaukee recently. It's excellent. We have been going there exclusively for our Friday fish fry since.
Any newly discovered places to grab a good fish fry in Wisconsin?
Nothing decent my way.. if you want fish fry about the only selection is catfish fillets or a chain like Long John Silvers or Red Lobster. What I wouldn't give for a good haddock fish fry in a diner right now!
Walleye is really good. It's not as dry or flaky as other fish like cod and so on. More of a moist fish. Kind of like whitefish. I wish we could get whitefish around here, but it seems to be a Lake Superior thing.
I remember going to a couple of places that give you a huge slab of walleye that fills the plate. Enough to eat and then take some home. I've had it broiled and deep fried.
I eat most kinds of fish except for the cheap fishy tasting stuff like pollock.
I love haddock and perch mostly.. will have to try walleye if I ever get the chance..

I tried to find a youtube version, but the only trollin' one I found was about online trolls.
Honestly, we don't get out for fish fries that often even though it's the thing to do on a Friday. I bet we get to one once a year. Not that I don't like them, just that all the fried food in one sitting is so much grease at once. I mainly eat the fish, fries and bread. I don't care for potato salad or cole slaw. These days I usually order my fish broiled or baked when going out.
If someone asked me where to get a good fish fry I wouldn't know the answer. We just don't get to many around here. I find that many claim they have the best fish fry at their restaurant. Not everyone can be the best.
