Pitbull Awareness Day

What is BSL and how can it affect you?
Breed Specific Legislation is the restriction or banning of a breed. Innocent animals are taken from loving homes like yours and mine and destroyed only because of their breed, or a breed they resemble. About every 10 years a new breed comes under scrutiny. In the past it has been Doberman Pinchers, Rotwiellers, and now the Pit Bull. Don’t think this can affect you? Here is a list of just a few local towns and their stance on BSL.
Beaver Dam – Being discussed
East Troy – Banned new pit bulls, restrict existing
Horicon – Being discussed
Juneau – Pit Bulls banned
Milwaukee – Restriction on Pit Bulls and Rotwiellers
South Milwaukee – Banned
Waukesha – Ban being discussed

Many dog bites/attacks that are reported to be Pit Bulls are actually other breeds. There are 20+ breeds commonly mistaken as a Pit Bull. Please, help us promote responsible dog ownership for ALL breeds before BSL moves on to another breed.

We are celebrating our love of ALL dogs in West Bend on October 20th! Please come out and join us. We are inviting several trainers to any questions you might have. This is a way to educate others on responsible dog ownership and BSL. Come for the cook out, conversation, and fun!!

We welcome volunteers. For more information please contact Jeremy or Kathleen at Racinepits@yahoo.com

Re: Pitbull Awareness Day

Welcome to theBubbler!

What a great cause. I grew up with Rottweilers and German Shepherds and they were angels because they were trained. I hate to see Pitts in shelters because homeowners insurance won't allow them. It's definitely the owner, not the breed, that makes a bad dog.

Re: Pitbull Awareness Day

I understand what you are talking about. My pitt bulls are 9 and 3 years old. They are the sweetest dogs I could have ever asked for. My boy "Bowser" has sired 5 litters of pups in his life and all of the pups have turned out to be fantastic pets. I've had compliments from every single person that has gotten a pup from him. I will probobly not breed him again though. I have 4 pups left right now and am having a hard time finding the right kind of people to sell them to. This is his second litter with "Popcorn" and the responce from the newspapers has really got me down. I've had almost 150 calls and I don't like what I hear. I need to find happy loving homes for these guys and the people that call me are not cool. I guess I have 2 questions: How do I find the right kind of people for my pups? and What should I do about some of the calls I've been getting?
Thanks, Jauguar36

Re: Pitbull Awareness Day

Welcome jaguar36!

I would make up an application for people to complete, just like the ones humane societies and rescues use. Ask potential owners about their current pets and experience with dogs. Get their vet's number and make sure their pets' medical records are current. Ask for proof of homeowner's insurance allowing pitts, or the landlord's number. You can also request a home visit to check out how they live.

If someone balks at any of this, chances are their intentions weren't good to begin with.

Re: Pitbull Awareness Day

When I adopted my Sela from the humane society I also had to sign an adoption contract.
Not sure how legally binding it is, but I had to agree that I would:

Provide care and treatment of the companion animal.

Obey all state statutes and local ordinances.

Not allow her to become a public nuisance.

Not sell or use her for medical or experimental research or breeding purposes.

If I didn't abide by these rules and others listed, I would be subject to a $300 liquidated damages fine.

It's sad but true. Majority of the time it is the owner that mistreated the animal, had the wrong intentions when raising the dog, etc. that gives this breed many wrong and bad habits. Because of this as stated in many articles, pit bulls can and do bite. Yes, just like other dogs, but not really. Unlike other dogs the jaws of a pit bull is what makes them a very dangerous dog to encounter when the dog has been raised or breed incorrectly. This dog can not only bite but can tear a small child apart and kill. Yes, many breeds are very dangerous when and if they attack, but the pit has the jaws of death. This is why so many people are scared of this breed in their neighborhoods.

The Pit bull has a bad reputation because of the horrendous attacks that can occur. Many times these attacks are provoked, many not. Many times the dog is thought of as a pit bull but is not, agreed. But for the attacks from this type of dog that has been real, many times the attacked child/adult is left scarred for life. The jaws of a pit is certainly not something I want to encounter.

I understand many people have pits that are just huge babies and I feel for those that love their pets knowing that many people are grouping together to ban this breed from their cities. But until all the wrong type of people are totally banned from using these dogs for bad reasons and more training on how to raise the dogs the correct way happen you will continue to hear people want to vote to remove this breed of dog.

It is sad for those that are responsible with their pits. But I feel very sad when I hear about a child being torn up by a neighbor's pit bull because the police could not get the dog to release the child. I shutter for everyone concerned including the dog.

I will never forget a TV talk show that came on one afternoon where a pit bull was slieeping on the floor in the home. A 2 year old toddler walked through and tripped over the dog's leg. The dog came up out of a sound sleep and tore the child's face off. Please keep in mind that this dog was brought into the family as a family puppy and raised everyday with the child. The dog and the child always played together.

The boy was on the show after years of numerous surgeries trying to repair his torn off face. He still had years of surgeries to look forward to. He almost died several times in the beginning. His life changed forever because he tripped over the leg of his beloved pit bull family pet.

Yes, any dog could have been startled out of a sound sleep and attack. Yes, many pets have done this. But because of the jaws of a pit bull they tore with such strengh and force on this child's face that the family could not stop the dog.

I know so many people love their pits and swear the dogs never showed aggression and are huge family 'babies'. What is sad is the fact that this family also said the same thing. They said the dog never showed one ounce of meaness towards anyone in the past. It simply 'snapped'.

I sat in shock at the pictures they showed. The whole show was very distrubing and I don't care how many people yell at me for saing this...from that day on I never let my children go to anyone's house with a pit bull. I don't let my child play at someone's house with a loaded gun in it...why would I let them play at a house with a pit bull? Or any large dog as far as that goes.

Just my thoughts on this. My heart goes out to both sides but my mind tells me to always be careful.

Pits are some of the nicest and most compassionate canines I know. I would love to have my own big scary baby.

SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN. Have them fill out an adoption application. I could send you one of mine you could "tweek" for your pups.......or after seeing it you might have a brain storm on how to make one to fit your situation.

Get references and check them out. Always get a vet reference. You can even tell potential adopters that you do home checks and will need to come for a visit before you let your pup go.
