There were 44,000 OWI arrests in Wisconsin last year — though the state estimates that for every successful arrest, there are 200 drunken drivers who aren't caught.

In the city of Baraboo, there were 188 arrests in 2006 for operating under the influence, Schauf said. As of Aug. 15 of this year, there had been 133 — an increase Schauf attributed in part to the department's greater focus on the potentially deadly crime.

"It's not just important to the department, it's important to the community," he said. "The reduction of crashes saves lives, saves people being hurt, and it saves millions of dollars every year."

Yep and last weekend a sheriff in Fond du Lac County was clipped by a drunk driver at 2AM on his 5th conviction. What saved the officer's life was doing a swan dive into the ditch. The man was removing a deer carcass. Unfortunately the vehicles were totaled.

So we all need to fight to make the first offence more unbearable ! If ya need to drink stay home or hire someone to drive! It's way cheeper and it's the right thing to do. ANd boy someone could make some cash driving drunks home .

I have a neighbor that just had his 5th and spent 3 whole months in jail. I took care of his wife and kids for months! I say 1 st time shame on you 2nd time shame on you and no you will not drive again, sorry .

The officer is lucky to be alive!! Vehicles can be replaced....lives can't.
