I have been doing some thinking recently, I have been in Pennsylvania for 5 years, I grew up in Milwaukee...and now I am living in Brookfield and am happy to be back in Wisconsin. It occurred to me recently that there is so much of Wisconsin I don't know about. And that I want to learn more about. So what do I plan to do about it? I'm going to take a road trip some time this summer...either one big one, or a few small weekend ones. I'm not sure yet. But, what I'm looking for is suggestions on what the heck to go see...What is in this state that I should check out...
Basically I need your help to help me plan my trip(s)...
I've been to a few places in this state but not many, and not enough...I need to see more.
So where should I go...
Also, I am the Video Developer at OnYourMark...so obviously I know something about video...so maybe this trip will turn into a documentary...something more then just a travel video....maybe...who knows...at the very least I will write about it.
I can't wait to hear what everyone says I should do...
Hey Christian
you sure have courage asking us bubblerettes "where you should go?"

I see your interests are " Movies, Music, Art, Animation, Vinyl Collecting"
I would say you will probably not find more vinyl than what would be in Milwaukee, I would guess those yards sales would be full of that stuff and then there is that 7 mile fair, if it is still going on.
The same with Music. I would guess Milwaukee/Madison with summerfest being a must . take your video stuff there, you may need a permit though. Art would also be more in the magor areas but toursist areas such as the Dells, Minoqua,Door county or Baifield area would also be good places for Art.
Wisconsin gets full of characters everysummer , they cross the cheeseline from the southern border. Some call them another name but I will not mention that here.
I like camping so that is where you will find me this summer, camping and while we are on the topic of camping you should go to that campout in the Dells and video the event.
Thats all I have for now.

Yeah that was what I was hoping to do, I don't go many places without a camera, 35mm or Video, so I will probably be at the camp out with a camera of some sort.
I like to camp as well, and one of the ideas I had, was if I did this road trip, I would only stay in places I could camp. I like that idea...
I think if I traveled and did this trip, I would be up to seeing anything, more then just music, movies, vinyl collecting and art...I'm big into landscape photography...so anywhere like that would be great too, something with beautiful scenery.
When ever we go on vacation I always get a general idea of where we want to go, research all the off the beaten path places, and take off. Most of the time the things we find are the ones I didn't even know about in the first place. lol
I have always thought about really checking out places in Wisconsin and doing something about it. I think the book thing is great but there's so many out there (weird wisconsin, wisconisin this and that)...but a video of places off the beaten path would be awesome.
I have numerous places I found when researching this one time when I was working on another website. I'll find my notes I have and list some of the weird and fun places and just great places to check out.
Doing this with a small popup would be great, or tent if you are into that. We took a 5,000 mile camping trip from here to Spokane Washington, back roads through the mountains etc. many years ago and that was a trip I will never forget. But it can be loads of fun touring around this great state also.
One might seriously consider Herbster, WI, in Bayfield County.
They have a very nice campground 1/2 mile north of 'downtown Herbster, right on Lake Superior.
And the food at the Raspberry Inn, in 'downtown' Herbster is excellent; best pizza we have ever had, they specialize in American/Italian.

Hey Christian
I would be willing to bet that you will find great landscape anywhere in this great state. I have been to all the corners of this state at sometime in my life, not aways because of fun but I have been there. If you plan on camping and want to keep the cost down. I would suggest you camp during the week and at a State campground. I suggest during the week because weekends are full but during the week there are non-reserveable site in most parks just check ahead of time using a schedule.
I highly suggest a simple trip the first time out. Take 43 north along the lake shore. There are planty of parks and the landsacpe is fabulous.. If I were you and had some time I would take 43 north to 57 north take that all the way to Sister Bay then take 42 north to the tip at Newport. From there is you desire take the ferry to Washington Island.
On your return trip take 42 south all the way to just north of Sturgeon Bay where you hit 57 south. Take that to 43 and the take 172 west to 41 south. Then take 41 south to Fondulac where you hit 45 and from there home.
You will find many interesting commuinties along that route.
One more thing. I posted this a while back on a camping message board it shows the campgrounds that my wife and I have camped, that are located on the shores of Lake Michigan.
This is a very popular camping destination , making reservation difficult to get. You must book 11 months in advance. They do offer picnicing, biking and nature walks for day users as well. Amongst the walks they have sandy shorelines and bordwalks over Dunes and wetlands along with a very nice nature center with a deck for star gazing at night.

The panoramic shot below is taken from the pet side of the beach.
There is no camping in this park but they have a great beach along with a nature center and nature trails. I found this to be a very nice place to stop and relax while in Door County. This park is ajacent to Cave point County park. The terrain in each park is like a dramic contract to one another, from sandy beach to hard rock drop-offs.

Rarely do hear the term "getting away from it all" in Door County but this park does that for you. Don't bother
brining your pop-up,travel trailer,or hybrids as this is a backpack only park. Everything must be carried in and
out but that is the price you pay for ABSOLUTE SOLITUDE. Each camp site is positioned in way that you get
the feeling of being the only one there. Each camp site has metal food vault to protect for marauding wildlife.
The rocky shoreline alone with the trails though the woods provides a very nice "get away from it all". Bring
your own TP as the supply is not always replished in a timely fashion.
Can you survive a weekend with only the bare essentials?
Try the Newport challange, the closest site is one mile from the parking lot.
Getting there is half the challange. You start out by getting to tip of Wisconsin's Door county and taking a ferry
to Washington Island. This ferry can haul cars and campers but the next ferry only hauls people. Once you get to
Washing Island you need to travel to the far north end to catch the Ferry to Rock Island. The entire island is a
State Park.
This is about as remote as you can get in the State of Wisconsin.and is very rustic. Bicycles are not even
allowed on this island but it is a great place to get away from it all. Most people use heavy duty wagons to cary
their needs to the campsite. The island has a trail that covers the entire island with a lighthouse on the far end of
the trail.

Nice photos....Wisconsin offers some very scenic parks, and views.
There's always The Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame, and the historic Lambeau Field.
The Green Bay Area also offers The National Railroad Museum.
Road trip mean sampling the local cuisine. In Wisconsin, Cheese factories are nearly as prevalent as taverns. http://www.lambeaufield.com/ http://www.wisconline.com/attractions/cheese.html
The directory here on theBubbler should be a good resource in planning a thoroughly enlightening and entertaining road trip.
Keep it between the lines, and don't drink and drive.
Enjoy
I used to pick up this guided tour book for WI road trips. It would map out the trip for you. Pin point sights to see and places to visit. I have not seen it now the past few years. Wonder if they still make it.....
I'd get it at road sides, some times gas stations etc.....road sides mostly.
Those were great road trips!

A good place to start is the Wisconsin tourist info building. Not sure where they are all located in Wisconsin but I think they are at rest stops. We have a big one on the state line of Illinois/Wisconsin on I94. We go out there and get information every year.
I haven't gone there yet this year. As soon as I have time I'll go scope it out and see what is there and pick up things that I can add here.
I also have some places I know of that I mentioned before that I would add, just haven't had time to post them yet. Will do soon.

I do believe that is where I got my last book from. I like to head there once a year as well. I just dont remember seeing one last year. Have not seen one there this year. I did pick up my campground book for camping again this year.
Brought my pig last year....was that funny! I had lots of visitors at my site.

OK, everyone can see the 'main' focal points of Wisconsin such as the Captiol building, or visit the Dells. But not everyone takes the time to see the strange but fun things. Here are a few suggestions for not only you (cakocinski) to check out but for others that would like to know...what is really out there to see in Wisconsin? lol
A good enough place to start the list:
ELKHORN WI:
WATSON'S WILD WEST, boast that it is a place to discover the uusual, one of a kind, different, and will be entertaining. You will step back in time when you visit the General Store of the American West. You can check out your luck panning for gold, listen to tall tales, visit the daily entertaining tours, and events. So much to do. So much to check out.
I would think that this would be a place that parents would like to take their children. But you never know, it would be fun to get pictures or a video showing the farms of Wisconsin.
Hinchley's Dairy Farm is a WORKING dairy farm!
Since opening their farm to the public in 1998, visitors of every age from all over the world have visited Duane and Tina Hinchley's dairy farm in Cambridge, Wisconsin.
"You feel like you're walking through a wood-en Bible."
That's how Maria McKay describes the Museum of Woodcarving. She displays the divinely inspired work of her uncle, wood sculptor Joseph T. Barta, in this wooded fishermen's -- or Fishers of Men -- country. It is the largest collection of woodcarvings in the world created by one man — 100 life-sized carvings and 400 miniatures. Barta spent 15 years crafting his series of religious scenes in ponderosa and sugar pine 2x4s laminated together.

WOODRUFF WI: If you get up by Woodruff Wisconsin you can't drive through without stopping to take a picture of the world's largest Penny.
Story goes that back in 1953 local school children saved their pennies so the town of Woodruff could build a much needed hospital. The story was soon taken up by the local TV station and pennies soon started coming in from all over the country. In the end, Woodruff built their hospital after 1.7 million pennies were collected.
You can visit the museum in Woodruff featuring the annual 'Million Penny Parades' at: 923 Second Avenue, Woodruff, WI
Make sure if you are touring Wisconsin you check out this next piece of Wisconsin History that I'm sure you will not find in your average book listing 'things to see in Wisconsin'.
In the 1800s more than 25 circuses used Delavan as their winter quarters. It was called the "Circus Capital of the World." The town has chosen to commemorate its heritage oddly, with a life-size statue of its most infamous resident: Romeo, the killer elephant.
Romeo was no misunderstood, one-shot killer. He was a serial murderer, knocking off five people over a period of 15 years.
James Frank Kotera is a man of few words. He leads a quiet, well-ordered, meticulous life. Five days a week he's a dependable employee at the Highland dump. In the winter he rides his snowmobile. And in between he works on his giant twine ball.
Did they just say GIANT TWINE BALL?

If you are traveling through Wisconsin checking out places to visit this summer don't pass by Rhinelander. Check out this article and website that explains why.
The fearsome Hodag, terror of the pine forests of northern Wisconsin, was first seen by a man named Eugene Shepard in 1893, in the woods outside of Rhinelander. Supposedly a resurrection of the restless spirit of dead lumber oxen, the Hodag reported by Shepard was a 200-pound, seven-foot-long, lizard-like beast covered with horns.
Looking for strange, odd or just plain things out of the ordinary to do on your vacation this year? Well I think I found something that will cover all of the above. On your list of places you can add a stop in Madison to the

lol sorry! lol
But Wisconsin is full of interesting off the beaten path places to check out, as well as the main attractions. I will be able to post more soon. Everyone should check these out. There is something for everyone's interests in Wisconsin.
Christian and I talked a bit outside around noon today about doing a few road trips for video weekends. Going out to see the sights and capture them while we're there for theBubbler and WisTube.com.
From the looks of this thread, could be a bunch of fun!
