Good Eats around Wisconsin

Know any out of the way little diners that are worth the trip?

We were coming back from the cottage (first time the College boy and the Air Force boy got to see it) and found a little place near the intersection of State Hwys 10 and 12, just East of Fairchild. GREAT place. You're always taking your life in your hands when you try one of those out of the way diners, but this was very nice. The place was clean and inviting. The walls and ceilings had the board that you can use as a Dry/Erase board... and there were Christmas greetings from all over. The food was simple, but great! It's called Kaufman's Kafe. Try a Kaptain Ken Burger.

This is one forum topic I will enjoy. We go out on a 'date' night every Saturday and love to find little places that are great. Anyone have any suggestions in the Milwuakee, Elkhorn, Lake Geneva, Kenosha, circle please post it. Even Madison area as well.
We are known to travel all over to find a good place to eat.

Will think of a few places we have been to and post them as well.

Awesome topic!

My favorite family style restaurants are Bublitz's (580 East Ave., Lomira) and The Pine Cone (685 Linmar Ln., Johnson Creek). Bublitz's has a buffet every night and they've all been great. I like the Friday fish buffet and Saturday's dessert bar is worth saving room for. I like the Pine Cone because they feed you insane amounts of awesome home-cooked food. The dinner rolls are massive!

Keith introduced me to Schreiner's (168 North Pioneer Rd., Fond du Lac) - fantastic chowder and desserts!

Fish fry... that could be a thread all its own! My choice is Meyer's (4260 S. 76th, Greenfield). You can get baked or fried cod and dinner comes with a plethora of delicious salads. Fridays are usually packed at Meyer's and they have ragtime musicians strolling the dining rooms.

If you want something a little more upscale, the Capri Steakhouse (126 South Ludington, Columbus) is one of my favorites. The decor and service at the Capri are right out of the 50's, you expect to see the Rat Pack dining there. I can't say enough about the food and service.

For Chinese, I stick with Chen's Gourmet (N85W16138 Appleton Ave., Menomonee Falls). It's near my house, and the Walnut Crispy Chicken is a must.

Hope to hear more choices from theBubbler members... particularly those small, local places you love!

OK, I knew this forum topic was going to be helpful. We are always looking for a good fish fry and this sounds great! We live in Kenosha, so Greenfield isn't to far from us. And music on top of good sounding food...I'm sure we will check it out sometime soon! Thanks!

While on the subject of Fish Frys, we sometimes visit CHANCES in Rochester Wi. It's just a little north of Burlington and west of Racine I think. It's not an all you can eat but they do have a good fish special on Friday nights. The place itself is really interesting and has alot of history behind it.

Anyone been to the fun place called PAINTED PARROT in West Allis? Now this is an interesting place to visit. Not far from the State Fair Park on National Ave.

It states it has "Authentic recipes from the Caribbean Islands, Jamaica, Belize, Grand Cayman."
Voted Best Caribbean Restaurant by Sheperd Express!

The first time we went in we thought we would order nachos for an appetizer. lol It comes in a garbage can lid, placed on a dog bowl and is so huge that we only made a dent in it since there was only two of us!

We also ordered dinner on top of that...oh I will say we crawled out we were so full! lol I have to always order the coconut shrimp with the mango sauce when we go even if I have to bring some home. It is sooo good. Their homemade chips are great also.

Fun place, music is loud (thought I would mention that if you don't like that)...and there is a loud bar to the side of it also. We go for the food though and it's worth the drive for us.

COTTON EXCHANGE
345 Hickory Hollow
Waterford, WI

Country charm & casual elegance surround you as you savor the history and taste of this beautifully restored turn of the century barn.

We came across this place only a short time ago so we ate there only one time so far. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was great.

While posting about places to eat, I can't forget to mention our very own little place that is down by the lakefront:

FRANKS DINER: (Kenosha)

The oldest continuously operating lunch car diner in the US, Franks Diner is a local favorite. In 1926, six horses pulled the diner to the spot where it stands today. Many celebrities, including Bela Lugosi, Duke Ellington, Liberace and the Lawrence Welk orchestra, have visited Franks. Don't miss our infamous homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, muffins and desserts, as well as daily breakfast and lunch specials. We also cater and host private parties in this most unique venue.

Can't forget the Norske Nook. We visit the one in Osseo. It's not far off the interstate. We stop there on the way to / home from visiting the oldest in Minneapolis.

Excellent home cooked food. Lots of Norwegian specialties, of course. Try any of their Lefse wraps... I like the roast pork the best. They also make EXCELLENT pies. Norske Nook has won many prizes for those pies. Also visit the "Norske Nook Kaffe Hus og Gave Butihh" (coffee house and gift shop) right across the street from the Osseo restaurant.

I love the place... and I have no Norwegian blood in me!

We go out to eat every Saturday night. We love to go to places that are new to us. Last night we checked out a place that we have never been to:

Biggs Road House
1900 mayfair road
Milwaukee, WI 53226
(414) 256-9000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The steaks were great. They still had sizzle in them when they brought them to our table. k

We didn't feel like driving to far last night and we were very hungry after stopping at Barnes and Noble in Racine so we decided to eat at:

Dino's Italian Village

1816 16th Street
Racine, WI 53403
Phone: (262) 634-1993

http://www.foodspot.com/dinos/

On Saturday night they offer a special of Prime Rib (king cut) for 19.95. Soup, salad, bread basket and potatoe. My hubby ordered it and it was really good.

I had the stuffed shrimp special (16.95). At first I almost panicked, (I was very hungry), and the shrimp was really very small. More stuffing than shrimp. But dipping in the melting butter cup the taste was soo good it was still worth it. The baked potatoe was very tasty also. I would not recommend it if you want something more to eat, but on the lighter side it was great. I perfer larger shrimp used for my stuffed shrimp though.

The atmosphere was so pretty inside and out with many red/white lights for Valentines Day.

This was our second time here and both times the food was very good. We really need to try their pizza so will try to do that next time.

Sister Bay Bowl in Sister Bay, WI (Door County) is the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. They have the best BBQ Ribs! Their sauce is tangy and sweet with a touch of spice. MMMM They also have very tender steaks and excellent broasted chicken.

Chilton has a quaint little diner/ice cream shop, on the main drag. Breakfast is always on the menu, with specialty soups, and sandwiches. I suppose you can get a steak. Seafood menu is the general friday type fish fry, fish sandwiches....the shrimp motiff...what have ya.
Bob, Vita, and Dee are there most times to greet and serve you.
Chilton Ice Cream Shop and Diner.
Stop in, and tell'em Jake sent you. See if they guess who "Jake" is.

We have a campground on Hanson Road here in Rome "Bark River Campground" they serve some of the best broasted chicken I've ever had. Huge portions. You also get broasted potato's with it, bread and slaw.

Then I like Sullivan Saloon for Elk burgers. They also have huge portions. Music, darts, pool.....
