Landscaping Plants

Plants form the most important part of any landscaping project. In fact the use of plants can make or break a landscape. This is why you need to bear special care before buying plants.

Basic questions that you need to ask yourself before purchasing landscaping plants:

What purpose do you want the plants to serve. For instance: Beautifying, climate control, noise reduction, privacy screening, increasing property value etc.?

What is the area/space that you intent to fill using the plants ?

What are the climatic conditions in your area (including exposure to sun, shade, rain, snow and wind) and if the selected variety of plant will be able to grow vigorously ?

What is your budget and what proportion of it are you planning to invest on plants?

What kind of budget and time can you allocate in-terms of plant maintenance?

With answers to these questions you should be able to have a beautiful landscaped yard that you would be proud to display.

Types of Landscaping Plants

Trees
Trees form an important part of any landscape. In addition to providing shade, trees can help protect your landscape by controlling erosion and by reducing wind speeds. The most common trees using for landscaping projects are deciduous trees, weeping ornamental trees and fall foliage trees.

Evergreens
Evergreens are plants that retain their foliage all year round and hence form an irreplaceable place in any landscaping project. Evergreens bring a sense of completeness to your landscape all year round. Some popular evergreen used in landscaping projects include Arborvitae, Firs, Hemlocks, Junipers, Pines, Spruce and Yews

Bushes, Shrubs and Hedges
Bushes, shrubs and hedges are woody plants that grow no more than six meters in height. They have several stems beginning from the base that spread out close to the ground. These plants can be made to grow assuming a predefined shape and bring a sense of life to the landscape. Some popular bushes include Adams Needle, Alpine Currant, Bluebeards, Barberrys, boxwood, burning bush and butterfly bush.

Annuals and Perennials
Annuals and perennials are small plants for landscaping that complete their life in a single cycle. Perennials in particular have a lifecycle of one year but continue to grow year after year through seed germination. Generally their life span exceeds the life span of their seeds.

Ornamental Grass
Ornamental grasses are quite popular when it comes to landscaping. They come in many varieties with each variety having specific size, shape, color and texture. The average height of ornamental grass is six to fifteen inches.

Vines
Vines are plants that have a climbing growth habit. They grown clinging to trees, plants or any other kind of support. Many landscapers make use of vines as a natural spread over their walls. This helps them get protection against high temperatures.

Ground Covers
Ground covers are plants that grow lower to the ground in a dense manner. They are used by most landscapers as an alternative to grass or for soil erosion control.

Plants for landscaping can be purchased as Balled plants (with a ball of soil in the burlap), Bare-root (without soil), Packaged (root packaged in a plastic wraps), Containerized (large plants sown in plastic containers) and Market packs (meant for ground covers, perennials and annuals)
