Finally we saw our first dandelions today! Found one in my front yard and several in my back side yard. My daughter took several pictures of them. I will try to put one on tonight.

There was a dandelion wine recipe posted earlier in this thread...someone take charge, and make some wine...this might get me off the wagon for abit
Thanks for the nice comments about my picture. I think you can see my love of dandelions showing through. I sometimes wonder if this isn't God's plan to spread sunshine and smiles all over after a long cold winter. Especially when you see a whole field of these bright sunny flowers.
(it's sad that some people look at these pretty flowers and just see weeds.)
These started out as seeds last year at Jefferson High School. My son had to bring in seeds for a class he was in and Grow "something"
I ordered the seeds thru Burpee.......

April 12, 2009: This year 2009 I found my first dandelion on Easter Day in the afternoon. Now the fields are covered with them. Love the bright yellow against the green grass when you are driving down a highway.
I'm one that goes out to kill the dandelions otherwise they start sprouting everywhere, even the flowerbeds.
I love dandelions when they are in a field by the thousands. They look so cheery. But in the yard and the flower beds? Well I have to say it doesn't bother me when they get mowed over or pulled out of the flowers. Maybe a few can stay by the side of the fence or by the walk way.
Going back to the picture I posted. Does anyone recognize the plant that is growing next to the seeded dandelion? Just thought it was cool looking with the color bands going down. I'm thinking the colors will just branch out into leaves maybe?
If it helps I was in the wood by a swampier area at Illinois Beach (south end) when I snapped this picture.
The only good dandelion is a dead dandelion.
They do not fit in well in the urban landscape and really stand out too much in the cracks of urban concrete.
The only good dandelion is a dead dandelion. Unless they reside in the sprawling rural lands of Illinois,Iowa or Minnesota.
That's my humble opinion. {8-|

I think the colorful weed is a horsetail plant. They usually seem to grow where it's damp.
LOL that is too funny. You know I read that a couple of times thinking you meant that dandelions were part of the horsetail plant. Had no idea about that since I never heard of the horsetail plants. lol I forgot I asked (again) about the weed next to the dandelion. Short term memory loss kicking in again I guess. lol
Anyways, I think you are totally right on the horsetail, I looked it up and it does look just like it and since it is quite wet in the areas where I was walking it makes sense that is what it is.
I know about some of the wildflowers here since my mom has a book and I have another one. I've seen those many times before. They have hollow stems and you can pull them apart at each section and blow in them to whistle. They don't get a flower, but they to have "leaves" that open up.
I am very observant on hiking trails and so on. I notice many plants and trees my husband just walks by.
Last year I found the strangest mushroom in my yard. It looked like the top had fallen off and was mushy, but I found out it was supposed to be like that. It had a strange porous, spongy and hollow stem. It was called an elegant stinkhorn.
