I have two large black walnut trees in front of my house. They're awfully hard on the roof. I have really had it with them and they must go.
Depending on who you talk to, some people tell me the logs are worth quite a bit. Other people say no. I think the trunks are about 18" diameter. Does anybody know the real story? Are they worth something? If so, who do I call?
Taking their place - sugar maples. For some reason, they LOVE our soil. Plus, they are supposed to be tolerant of the juglone that the walnut trees put out.

I have heard stories of people getting upwards of $10,000/tree but that was before all this recession hit..
Good luck and keep us informed on your decision.

....Now, a very great man once said
That some people rob you with a fountain pen
It didn’t take too long to find out
Just what he was talkin’ about
A lot of people don’t have much food on their table
But they got a lot of forks ’n’ knives
And they gotta cut somethin’....

Replant with honey locust trees and you won't have to rake.
Interesting. I looked them up, and maybe one of those in the back yard would be nice. I'm really hooked on the Maples for the front yard, though. I don't mind raking leaves (I kind of enjoy it), it's the 'walnut bombs' that have to go.

Every year I see people around town picking up the walnuts in the church yards etc.. if you have a lot, there are people who will come clean them up for free.
"Black Walnut thieves are becoming common. Usually posing as tree surgeons, they appear when homeowners are away and make off with the trees in a matter of hours. Eight trees worth over $50,000 were cut from a property in Michigan, and at least several Black Walnut thefts are reported annually in New Jersey. While not a danger of extinction, Black Walnut trees are becoming less common in the landscape."
You can try posting on Craigslist to see if you have any takers on those trees.

The values of Walnut logs are hard to quote. I would suggest contacting a local sawmill for a reliable value. Many sawmill shy away from residental logs because of the chance that old metal can be indide the logs, causing incredible damage to saws. Anyways, THANKS KEITH for the plug and good luck finding a home for the walnut logs.
Use this website to find answers to your Black Walnut tree questions. Value of Walnut Sawlogs
I planted several (160) black walnut trees with a friend. The trees were about 9" tall when we planted them, and are now over 30' tall. We cut the branches off as far up as we could reach.
Value of the tree will have to do with the diameter of the trunk at 4.5', along with the height of the tree. The amount of knots will also play a part in evaluating the tree.
Be cautious, as there are crews of tree thieves going around posing as tree surgeons. A stand of eight trees were taken from a property in New Jersey, and fetched $10,000 each.
The value will also be effected by where the trees were grown. Yard trees are sometimes loaded with metal from fences, and whatnot. Metal in the trees will tend to do damage to saw blades, and other logging paraphernalia, so be careful.
