The last couple of days I've noticed a large flowering tree in people's yards and some were just growing wild near the road. I don't remember these from other years. I'm not sure how I missed them before. They have a strong scent and are quite pretty. The flowers are white and pea-like and grow in clusters. I finally found my mystery tree by doing a search. It's a black locust. That makes sense since the leaves look like a honey locust tree.
I took this photo a few years ago while cam ping at Ottawa State Park, located just south of Oconomowoc.
Doe anyone have an Idea of what type of tree it is?

Nice pic, John.
I'll need more info on this specimen.
If you can tell me what sort of trunk it has...is it a single trunk, or a bush type plant. Also, what would you guess the diameter and circumference of the nut is. What time of the year was the photo taken? This will help me judge the maturity of the tree/bush/nut.
Looks like something that might be good to plant in your deer feed lot. Deer like nuts.

This photo was taken late june to mid july, the nut is a little smaller than a golf ball and it was a sinle trunk. The tree height was about 15 to 20 feet. not sure on the trunk diameter would say at least 12 inches.

From the foliage and fruit ( golf ball size in mid July ) I'd guess black walnut.

Looks like a Walnut or a Butternut. The trunk seems awfully thick for a 15-20 ft. tree. The short tree with a thick trunk sounds more like a Butternut.
Count the leaves on a bunch of the fronds. Butternut typically have 15 leaves per frond and Walnuts typically have 17. But both of them vary so you have to count a lot of them and maybe you can be sure one way or another. Do the nuts look more round than elongated? I can't really tell by the photo. Walnuts are usually more round, while the Butternut is more elongated.
I don't know if John was just teasing, but I knew that as soon as I first saw the pic. I planted a large group of these trees a few years back. Out of the group I planted, about 2/3 made it. Black Walnut trees are much sought after for the lumber. Nice veneer. Same with Butternut.

I will be going down there this month and I will ask the ranger what type of three it is. I was guessing on trunk diameter.
thanks for the input.
