question about foxglove

I purchased some foxglove this year and planted them. My excitement was growing as the first blooms were starting to show. Sadly the storm this last weekend blew a tree down on the plants and snapped the tall stems off. My question is....will it try to rebloom? The plant itself is fine , just the stem is gone.
Thanks for any info.

Re: question about foxglove

I would say it is a great possibility that it will rebloom. A lot of perinneals will rebloom if the deadheads are cut off. My delphiniums will bloom at least twice. Once it did three times. It was awesome and that is my favorite ... the deep purple delphiniums.

Re: question about foxglove

Fox glove is biennial, I think. They will reseed although not true to the parent as far as color.
I also think you will see it bloom later this summer.

Re: question about foxglove

I did some research trying to find out something about this question...

It somewhat depends on what 'type' of foxglove you actually have. Also, that Foxglove is a bienneial plant. This being that the first year usually they do not bloom but produce leaves/greenery, and the second is when long stalks grow up and produce flowers. You may have planted a second year flower. Since each plant produces more then one stalk I would guess if stalks are broken this early in the season that more may show up.

It was also noted in many places that you need to be very careful with this plant. Foxglove is a highly poisonous plant. It is advised that you wash your hands after working with it and never put your hands in your mouth, wipe your mouth, or touch your eyes etc. when working with any part of this plant including the flowers.

Not sure if this helped but that is what I found so far.

Re: question about foxglove

Thanks all.

I knew it is biannual, but it'll self sow.
Interesting about it being toxic, I'll remember that.
I sure hope it reblooms.

Re: question about foxglove

I read on another forum where someone posted that if you cut the large main stalk off before the last of the flowers bloom that it will force other smaller stalks to grow in it's place actually producing more flowers later in the summer.

I have no idea if this actually works, but that is what this person was claiming. So please keep us posted as to what happens to your foxgloves, you have peeked my interest.

Patti

Hope all the rain didn't wash away your house or anything. Former Pardeeville resident here myself. Saw pictures of the area around the Lunch Box, can't believe they have re routed the water from the lake across the road.

Re: question about foxglove

ya, we're under water. The plants were/are under water, but now its in the house. We own a split level ranch, the lower level is all living space. We've ripped carpet up and put all the kids stuff up on blocks. There is about an inch or two down there.
I'm not complaining.....I'm happy to still have a home. I cannot imagine the devistation the folks in the dells feel.

I'll post back on the foxglove sagga as the season progresses.

Here's to hoping the water is gone before December....lol

Re: question about foxglove

We used to live on Main Street, just a block south of the Kwik-Trip, how far down Main did the water get? Would hate to see what the park looks like, we used to fish there from that handicap spot all the time.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in that area. Good luck.

Re: question about foxglove

LOL we used to live a block South from Kwik Trip as well. (about 8 years ago)
The Wendt family on LaFalette has water up to their back door.
I heard (you know how that goes) that there are 3 homes over there that have shifted off of the foundations and are evacuated. The fear is that they will topple over.

Thank you for the prayers. Please pray the lake holds. If that spot they are channeling or the other dam breaks our whole lake will dump into the Fox river and lower lake which in turn hits Swan Lake. It will look like Lake Delton....empty.

Back to the foxglove...My back yard is no longer under water. We pumped the water off the yard to the curb....and hopefully not back into my house.

Re: question about foxglove

Good news. ....my foxglove has started another shoot. It's shorter than the first, but at least I got a bloom (and seeds) from it..

Re: question about foxglove

Hey, how's the cleanup going in P-Ville????? Hope everyone there is doing ok, it's such a nice little village, meet nothing but nice people when we lived there.

Glad to hear the flowers are blooming and you can get seeds from them, maybe next year they will do great.
