ATTN Heads up everyone

I got a message on one of the items I have to sell. Everything went smooth until it came time for the payment arrangements. He was fine with the price, but all of a sudden he was going to send me 4000 and I was to cash it and return the rest to his shipping company.
His email was laidbackwayne@yahoo.com and he said he was stationed in scotland.
So be careful
Rex

Everyone:

When you post a Classified ad, please don't put your email address in the description of the ad. People will still be able to reply to your classified. theBubbler will forward the response to the email address you enter in the email field.

The reason that we don't want you to put your email address in your ad is that we can stop these scammers from using contact feature in the classifieds, but we can't stop them from reading the address from your ad and replying with their own mail client.

Remember, odds are good that the email address that it looks like the spam/scam is coming from is forged or hacked and they're probably lying about where they are. If you receive an email you believe is a scam, check our faq for the links on where and how to report it to the authorities ( http://www.thebubbler.com/modules.php?name=FAQ&category=8 ). For every one of us they try and fail with, there's someone else who falls for it, so it's important to get the information to the authorities. They'll need the whole email but what they really need most are the headers from the email, the part that tracks its path and hopefully tells us where the email really came from.

Good thread....

We've been running a 'BEWARE OF SCAMS WHEN SELLING ONLINE' article on the theBubbler homepage regularly for over a year. Click here to see it.

Here are a few other observations.

- Andy is right, leave your email out of ads. I have to add that - as hard as we try to keep spams and scams out, we cannot be responsible for any that make it through

- Never send money as a 'down payment' or to 'hold' the item

- If it sounds too good to be true, it quite likely is

- ANYTHING from 'Outgun' is a scam

- Check out sellers. Now scammers are trying to place ads to scam buyers. We generally catch them fairly quickly but you need to be alert as a buyer, too. Here are some ways:
-Look to see how long sellers been a Member of theBubbler. Not always real helpful because many people join just to place an ad.
-See if the weather map shows them in or near Wisconsin.
-See if they've made forum posts or other contributions to the community that don't have to do with selling.
-Ask for a phone number. Wisconsin numbers include a 414, 920, 608 or 715 area code
---None of these are guarantees, but they help imply legitimacy.

We hope to ultimately add a rating system here so buyers and sellers can log their experiences for the benefit of others

Finally, when in doubt, Contact Us

Regards,
Keith
