We've been running a 'BEWARE OF SCAMS WHEN SELLING ONLINE' article on the theBubbler homepage regularly for over a year.
Here are a few other observations.
- Andy is right, leave your email out of ads. I have to add that - as hard as we try to keep spams and scams out, we cannot be responsible for any that make it through
- Never send money as a 'down payment' or to 'hold' the item
- If it sounds too good to be true, it quite likely is
- ANYTHING from 'Outgun' is a scam
- Check out sellers. Now scammers are trying to place ads to scam buyers. We generally catch them fairly quickly but you need to be alert as a buyer, too. Here are some ways:
-Look to see how long sellers been a Member of theBubbler. Not always real helpful because many people join just to place an ad.
-See if the weather map shows them in or near Wisconsin.
-See if they've made forum posts or other contributions to the community that don't have to do with selling.
-Ask for a phone number. Wisconsin numbers include a 414, 920, 608 or 715 area code
---None of these are guarantees, but they help imply legitimacy.
We hope to ultimately add a rating system here so buyers and sellers can log their experiences for the benefit of others
